We used to do that with the raspberry bushes that escaped the fences.. or the strawberries. I planted strawberries along the edge of the driveway hoping kids would steal a few.. you're right, they are always sweeter.
Seed Snatchin' Part VII
Weez, I bow to the wise
It's OK, Dyson... you can say the 'old and the wise'! LOL!
so who won the game? i was napping aand did not watch
The Bus got stuck ih TRAFFIC. But the same ole won. We are packed with Eagles fans and they have had alot of fun. I hope they win one eventually. It was a great game.
I used to work in a restaurant bar, and we always had parties for Superbowl Sunday. I came from a farm community school system, quite small, and we didn't have high school football. Consequently, I have no idea what those guys are doing out there in that grass field... it is grass, isn't it? See, I know nothing.
The bar owner insisted that the staff all show enthusiasm for televised sports, entering into conversation with the fans that stopped in. I was always at a loss as to what to say. I recall getting a strange look one day when I asked who touches up their helmets every night. Anyway, having football and all the antics that go with it forced upon me, I've developed an aversion to it.
You know, if you turn them helments upside down remove all that junk inside, drill a few holes for drainage, and they would make great hanging planters.
Now you're talkin!
Ha ha ha! Well let's see... Yesterday I cut down mt 5 Miscanthus, 2 Pampas grass, fruit trees, butterfly bushes, and 2 switch grass all with a pair of small one handed pruning shears! YUCK! I am NOT doing that next year. I can barely type! It took me 3 1/2 hours yesterday. Near the end I had to squeeze my right hand with my left to make the cut! I even took out my kitchen knife sharpener in a vain attempt to make things easier.
Sounds like you need some bigger cutters, NC, or a couple helpers! All my plants are asleep except house plants and the few seedlings that are starting to come up under lights. Meanwhile, I'm weeding out my tote. I've got over a shoe box full of seed packets ready to find new homes.
Nicole
Sounds like you could have used a good ole fashioned scythe for that pampus or, a weed eater.
You can be more of a wonderwoman with better tools. LOL
Haha! I know I surely DO NOT feel like wonderwoman today! LOL Next year I use the CHAINSAW!!!!!
Oh, but the really funny part is my Rottie, Austin developed a fixation on my plastic rake yesterday. He was chasing me all over the place stepping on it and biting it. Whenever I put it down he would grab it, run off and chew it like a toy! It was so funny I had a hard time fussing at him. I wish I had taken a picture! I will try to get one eventually.
Nicole
Now, if you could just tie it to his rear and let it chase him, you'd get all your raking done.
OOHHH! Great idea! They owe me anyway! They're spending my son's college money! LOL - not really funny though.
My mix breed ate something - teddy bear, bed stuffing, who knows yesterday afternoon - and I had to take her to the emergency vet last night. I was afraid she might have been poisoned - I have a big phobia about that. Anyway - $300 later they sent her home with me last night with a few shots for pain. She slept with me - laying completely across the bed - me with a foot or so to lay down - at her butt no less. She felt so bad I didn't have the heart to move her. Anyway, she weighs 70 lbs. and my Rottie 80. He was in bed/out of bed/in bed - you get the picture. She didn't move at least. I am really rested today! LOL Now the regular vet called to tell me she 'went potty' this morning and all is well! Haven't even seen THAT bill yet (more x-rays too.) Of course if I hadn't taken her and it were worse I would feel horrible. Oh well - my son can always get student loans! LOL
Nicole
I was confused by the foliage too, Sidney. The flower is like all my perennial phlox, but the foliage isn't. Maybe it's a annual phlox? I have never seen the foliage of those.
Football fan or not, everyone in my state lived and breathed Superbowl yesterday. I tried to time my grocery run just before the game so the crowds would be thinner, but it was still somewhat busy. Most years I wait until kickoff time, then I have the store to myself! LOL, it's like a morgue.
DH and I went to "watch" at DD's house (He and DSIL watched, DD and I played with the kids and looked at magazines.)
I like the helmet planter idea!
NC, what an ordeal! poor you and the dog!
When we cut grasses at work (sometimes we just cut grasses all day) we tie them in a bundle-this is often a two person job- then one person holds the grass and the other cuts it with really sharp hedge clippers. One person could do it but it is harder. A chain saw would be better, though!
Weez, what seeds have you started? And which ones are looking for homes? You don't have to name them all, LOL it would take eons, I suspect!
I almost got a green spider plant baby at the store yesterday, but I don't have a very smooth technique yet, I have to learn from the experts here, LOL. . .The flower guy was watching me...
og, Repeat after me, It's just a baby and needs a home. It's just a baby and it needs a home.
Glad to see someone sees my perspective about the petunia. I am afraid 8ft may be right.
A innocent looking invasive MONSTER mix. I had failed to plant it and can fail to worry now. I can even overcome not-planting-it guilt.;>)
NC, you better train those dogs to make a living in the movies just to support their bad habits! Poor kid washing dishes all night at the cafeteria because his mom spent all his college money on the garbage gut doglets! LOL!
Hey, Oceangirl, I hope they are composting all that lovely grass! (Unless the Weed & Feed!) I've started iris, lily, allium, lobelia, heuchera, and some winter sow stuff I can't even spell or pronounce. I baked two roasting bags of seed starter, so I'm ready for round two! If you want to give some seeds a home, just check out my seed trade list and email me!
Heres my report:
My pansies are up with two leaves, great germination on those, the hollyhocks are up with more than 2 leaves, (can you tell this is an amateur speaking?) the morning glories were started too early, one is about 8 inches high, (i may have blooms in March in my house..ha ha) the coleus I started seems to be stalled, but looks healthy with just 2 leaves, blue bedder salvia is showing good germination, west friesland salvia isn't showing me ANYthing, and OH MY GOSH, the Scotch marigolds are going at it after JUST 2 DAYS?!!! I'm totally happy!
Okay, It's just a baby, it needs a home
It's just a baby it needs MY home...
Sidney, it's a good thing you didn't plant YOUR monster baby...
Weez, We take the grass to a dump where it is machine composted and sold. It's an awful muddy place but I'm glad it's not going to waste. I'm a big promoter of composting, so happy to see it done on a large scale.
I just started some daylillies and hostas in the fridge today. I got a new light for the basement and I'm sure this will be fun and quite a learning process. I thought it would be a good time to start perennials but too early for annuals. From your planting list, seems like I'm on the right track so far.
Do you get some interesting variations from collected seed? Other than the petunias, I remember you got some nice, different petunias. (I will check out your trade list!)
I hope we didn't drive 8ft and Dyson away with all our disinterest in football!
Cindy
Rah, Rah, go team, fight! There, we've footballed. Kathy, sounds like your seeds are doing great! Oceangirl, I've had pretty good luck with the petunias coming back pretty close to the original. I try to collect seeds that are not in a mix so there is less likelihood of cross pollination. Of course, there is always the issue of hybrids reverting.
Well, that opens up a lot of possibilities. I always thought I couldn't grow hybid seeds and expect good results. Now I will definetly collect more, and try growing them!
While we're still a couple of months away from being able to put stuff out, I've been sneaking a few perennial seeds under the lights.
stargazer Dahlias and echinacea paradoxa (Yellow cone) are up.
Pagoda dogwood, chinese red and water birches are up.
Even put some new brug seeds I was given (Golden Lady x Aurea Pink) and was surprised when they started popping in seven days.
Probably 'need' to dig into the stock and start something else this week.
Oh me I am going to start my seeds this weekend! I hope I can get someone to help watch the youngin'! I do start mine late, but I don't have a great set up so the later the better seedlings I end up with. One of these days I'm going to have a greenhouse even if I have to live in the darn thing!! LOL
Oh, Nicole I felt that way for years. Moved to one instead, or close to it. I just have to get syncronized with nature's clock here.
My poor DH built me a greenhouse so he could have the diningroom table back. I had his spot wedged in pretty tight with flats of seeds. Well, we're already working on greenhouse number two, and there are still flats of seed germinating on the table!
hee hee hee! Let me tell you my idear, if I haven't already. There is a magazine called Charley's Greenhouse and Garden. In it is a $5000 greenhouse that is just gorgeous!! Anyway, my idea is to add that one to the HOUSE - like a sunroom! 5K may be expensive for a greenhouse but it's cheap for a sunroom!!! LOL
Here's my fantasy.... we scraped together the money to add a solarium to the house. I graciously agree to have a hot tub in it. The floor is brick with a drain. The entire addition is lexan. I have sinks and a long wand with a mister attachment. I have lots of tropical plants. In the spring, my DH will not be able to use the hot tub because the cover will be down & I will be covering it with all those heat loving seeds flats. Can you ask for a better heat mat than that! Poor DH.
That's an AWESOME heat mat!!! Why didn't I think of that? OK, throw a hot tub in mine too - the seedlings really need that! Humidity too!
:)
I kept some seedlings in a friend's hot tub room one spring. Boy, they loved the top of the hot tub... it was like a cat on a window sill! LOL!
I was trying to save my old waterbed heater fro a seed mat, but Dh threw it out! He didn't know. So I guess I'll have to get a sunroom with a hot tub instead.
that only seems fair, Oceangirl.
Oh yes, I totally agree! Shame on him! You NEED a hot tub to replace your waterheater!
Get one with the wide, well-insulated foam cover.
Hey you ol heifers and hind-quarter 'sNeed-satchers' you ...
Jes wanted to let ya know, to go on without me a spell. I'm gonna take a hiatal hernia (scuse me .. a wee lil hiatus - hee!) from le' bus fer a wee spell ... I'll rondevous wit da rest of yous - here, there, and the other, and later on sometime ..
Hey .. jes make a note tho' > The engine's got a leak developin' around her rear seal - so ya yall don't stressin' her much now. Imperative .. that ya keep'er oil levels checked - frequently and faithfully!!
And gear her down on the long uphill grades ... give her ample time to make the pull, and don't push her none! Don't be a grindin' her gears now dagnabbit. Specially when ya got a good load of goodies on her! And pray tell, keep the diesil treatment in her tank ... the injectors need the cleaning of the additive. Along with you guys sportin' her from heat and humidity to dry and arid so quickly - it'll further insure no or low moisture build up in her tank too! She's been faithful .. so don't none of ye even risk mistreatin' her none!
And, for geezer sake - don't ye dare risk givin' her a cussin' either! She's liable to break down completely on ya, if'n ya do - until proper tendin' and sincere apologies is offered up and made to her - to meet her fancy.
One of you ol boogers've been a leavin' the coffee pot on at night! And that replacement glass decanter/carafe there - cost me a good multi-stitched few busted-knucklers and an ER visit .. from a deep dive, in a big ol purple K&B dumpster many years ago !! They cost a whole arm and a leg, nowadays ... heehee ... Even if the coffeemakers 'guts' go on the blink; keep that glass pot - it's worth a proverbial fortune!
Oh yeah .. drip a drop or two of some gas treatment in the fuel tank fer the Onan generator too ! And remember to let it run and 'cool down' a bit, after the load is taken off'n it .. before you cut the engine. Treat and respect 'em engines and machines jes as delicate as 'em plants and seeds, I'm tellin' ya .. They can be plum hostile, if'n ya don't !! .. hee hee ..
Luv all of you ol walkin'-talkin' dumpster-divin' nuts, choir gals, fruit cakes, and snatchers ... more'an ya know! And, keep a trustin' in ya instincts too ...
See ya round and about ...
- Magpye
Hey, Magpye. This isn't good news. The ol' bus may just roll off into the ditch somewhere and refuse to back out. You'd better have a good excuse for not climbin' aboard. Email me!
Hey, the coffee pot is NOT my fault. You know that 24oz coffee mug I'm always carrying around is for, uhmm, uh, cold stuff.
See you on the flip flop Magpye!!
Yada yada yada - now 8ft. I saw you taking the last bit of coffee and puttin' 'er back empty!
:)
If you guys don't quit fussing, I swear I'm going to get a recipe for 'Cowboy Coffee' in a big ol' camp pot. That'll put hair on your chest, NC, and take it off yours, 8ft!
bawaaaaaahahahahaha
:) Better than hair on the back I guess!
Nicole
