Note concerning downtime

Dave's Garden went down today at around 9:30am Central, and remained down until 1:30pm Central.

The server that hosted DG is gone and we're now back up with a brand new server in a different part of the country. Any data that was sent to DG (including emails or posts) between midnight and 9:30am are lost.

Going forward we shouldn't have any more problems, as we're now on a new server.

Thanks for the heads up. Now I guess I'll have to call AOL back and eat crow! (sheepish grin). I tend to push the panic button, or anything else within reach, when I can't get on DG!!!!
Pati

Also, in case anyone was wondering what happened: a backhoe operator in Tennessee cut right through the cables going into the network center where DG was located.

Happily, I just had a spare server sitting in a NOC in New York, so the switch was relatively painless.

You always seem to have everything covered so beautifully. Great work, Dave. Glad you're thinking ahead in case of situations like this. I kind of panicked, too. I am in the process of researching some plants for a landscaping proposal and freaked out when I couldn't access the PlantFiles.

Main1 croaked huh? Or I should say the connection to Main1.

Dave, good job! At least my house is a lot cleaner after not being able to work outside nor being able to visit DG.

Modi'in, Israel

well, all those lost threads and replies is a real pain. And what about the plant files challenge? Anyone working during those 9 1/2 hours (mainly those of us not in the US) did a lot of work for nothing. I replied to at least 2 dozen posts during that time.....I have no way to go back and re-reply as I can't remember everything I replied to! Arg! I know it's not your fault Dave....it's just frustrating.

Dang that backhoe operator! grrrrrrrrrr!

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

I lost some stuff from early this am, too. Not much that can be done about it, though.

Dave,

The comments in the PlantFiles don't seem to be coming up as quickly as they had been. Is everything still ok with that? I have entered a number of plant cultivars and comments, but haven't seen the comments yet. Just curious.

Thanks,
Carla

I think many users may have trouble if they are just pulling up a bookmark for www.davesgarden.com. I got here through the IP address then noticed just 'davesgarden.com' works.

I did some posting during the down time as well . could not work it out.
not quite as mad, as I thought I was.LOL

The old server is back online now and I am starting to pull data off it and bring it to the new server.

The PF work done today will be restored, but not until tomorrow at the earliest.

Dave

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

You must've had a heck of a day, Dave. Glad you enjoy this stuff so much (and are so well-versed at it).

Mystic and some others can't get on yet. Said she gets this error message:

Warning: mysql_pconnect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) in /www/garden/inc/common/db_mysql.inc on line 53
Database error: MySQL Connect error: Cannot use database
MySQL Error: ()
Session halted.

Will everything clear up as the server continues to run?

Yes, things will clear up in the coming hours.

In the meantime, I have restored all the checkboxes that were created this morning before the crash. If anyone needs anything else restored, please just let me know.

I can't get through by typing in your url or by my firefox link. The only way I was able to access Dave's was by going through Ask Jeeves and it said Dave's Server was down and it gave me a different link.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Where is that backhoe operator, so I can go beat him senseless? (Just kidding ...but it HAS been a long day - I am just now able to get back into the site!)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Probably just a guy, like so many of us, out there doing his daily work and ooooooops!

Thanks for bringing the site back up so quickly dave!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

The url that Judy found is the one that I got from Ask Jeeves. The link in my computer's history won't work.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

I was SO sad this morning not being able to get on. I took the day off to just sit, drink coffee, and play on Dave's.
I'm glad it's back up now however.........
Thanks for the extra work Dave.

Marc

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

If the site was down, I don't think any link would get you here, would it? Having run a BBS years ago in the age of the dinosaurs I know what a pain it is when things get messed up. I don't think I would want to run anything as big as Davesgarden and be responsible for keeping that many people on line and happy.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks for getting me back in Terry. I would never have made it without your help. I still can't use the DG logo in IE or Firefox, Just glad to be back.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Glad you're back among us!

Thanks for all your hard work Dave. I still can't get on but Peggy was able to get me in a back door? Sorry all you admins have had such a tough day and we appreciate all your hard work.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Glad to see DG back up, hombre! :D

On the plus side, I did get some laundry done and do some writing!

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I couldn't get on during the down time, so did other stuff that needed to be done, now I don't have any trouble using the old settings. Thanks for all your hard work Dave et al. I sure miss DG's when I get to it....

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

Whew.. I had a late day at work, got home and DG was FORBIDDEN>>> even when I tried other links.. I wondered "what did I do?" Or Did my DS mess up my computer? I used system restore and I was so relieved that everything worked. It made me realize what an important part of my life DG really is..
gushing now..
Glad all has been resolved.
:))))

I got in the back door too. (Thanks Brenda!) How is that possible??? I can't get in the regular way. Why not???

Dave, you're a gem; I'm amazed you got things working in under a day. I'm sure all our various problems will straighten themselves out...sure is a bummer being told I'm "Not a valid person"!

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Dave - Kudos to the Guru - you are one amazing dude.

Kennewick, WA(Zone 6b)

It is 8:50 right now and this is the first time it would let me on. How did all of you post?
Not good with the computer, but I have checked every 30 mins. I thought it was me. I even emailed Texas Jewel to ask her what happened.

Thanks Dave! I guess I did not realize how much I love this site!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

whew....I had posted yesterday and today they were not there, I was trying to remember if I had said something controversial (LOL) and they just got deleted.....but then realized all my posts were not there, glad to hear it was just a glitch and all is back to normal.
Dave, awesome that you had a back up server just sitting in NYK...

Modi'in, Israel

Hurray! Dave I thought all that info was lost forever. I personally didn't do any work in the PlantFiles during that time, but I know when I do work on them I work solid for several hours straight after the kids go to bed. I'm sure other people do that too....so I thought "oh MAN those people must be really frustrated at all that work lost .... especially during the challenge". I'm glad they got their work back :-).

And definitely cool that you had a back-up server AND that you were quick on your feet to spot and fix the problem!

:-)

Allen, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm so impressed. I worked in IT for 23 years. I can't think of one time that we ever had an extra server that was "just sitting around" AND ready to go in a couple hours. If we had a server sitting around it was either broken or waiting to be setup. I'm ashamed to say this but most times even getting a legitimate backup server up and ready to go would have taken half a day or more. I can't explain why we were this way, I was doing software development. I do know we had what I was told a top rate network team and it was a fortune 100 company, not a small company with no budget or management....

What I'm trying to say is, "WOW! Good job Dave, good planning, good foresight, good management, just good, good, good! Thank you!."

Blenheim, New Zealand

I find it hard that it was there, and now it's not .where have I been.
thanks dave for being back on

I thought something was wrong with my computer & when I emailed Terry & didn't get an answer-I just knew it was my computer.Glad to hear everything is ok at daves & with my computer.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I got home from work about 530pm last night and was not able to get in. I got that forbidden message. Kinda concerned me since my computer just came back from having my hard drive wiped. Was not able to get on all evening. Gave up about 915pm and went to bed. When I got up this am, everything was fine.

Zone 6, OH(Zone 6a)

Seems to be a little faster now :) Don't fix it if it ain't broke...hehe
