Sorry to hear about your loss Darius and glad that things got righted with your niece.
No home baked goodies here today. I did open a big box of cheese nips and have been eating them by the handfuls! Want any??
Also packed up a goodie box for my nephew is Iraq - trip to the post office tomorrow! All he wanted me to send was 'junk food'
DH and I are gonna return bottles today ( hope all of you have a bottle return in your state) It has saved so much road litter here in Mich. I am betting we get $30 bucks back. I'm gonna spend the $$ on something totally for me (gardening stuff I think)
Borrowed my DIL's paper cutter and promptly dropped it and broke it, so I had to buy her another one yesterday ==grrrrr - that is why I don't borrow things.
Gloomy and cloudy here, but NO ice - thank goodness. I think I should try those orange rolls - sound good
Coffee and...part 5 :-D
Gosh I can't keep up - this is a fast mover.
Darius I am so sorry about your uncle. I am glad the snit worked itself out though. That's important. I know you wish you could have been there. The dream sounded really comforting.
Sarv, I know what you mean about friends. Some you've had so long that even if they are ornery you don't really even thing about it! Sometimes it's good to let some folks drift away quietly.
Hope all are well! We had snow/ice yesterday but it's already gone! We had a bit of snow on the ground for my son when he woke from his nap yesterday so it worked out perfect in my opinion!
Have a great rest of your Sunday!
Nicole
Darius....condolences to you. What a beautiful dream....and I think it was not all a dream either.
I am invited to my youngest daughters for dinner tonight...I told he I'd make a Blueberry Cobbler (one of those EASY ones). She said...."but I don't have any ice cream for it"....my DGS piped up and said..."Grandma does!!". He knows he can count on Grandma for his Root Beer Float when he comes over. LOL
After church this morning a girl friend and I went out to eat...Long John Silver's finally reopened!! They have about all the fish that is available in this town...except some Friday Night Catfish meals.
WEll...I'll have a quick cuppa and get busy on this Cobble!
Have a good evening. Jo
My condolences, darius.
Darius, sending my sympathy at your loss and joy at the vision that was shared. Glad that the other issue worked itself out.
Have been watching HGTV a lot. Love some of the make-overs that they do, wish they would come and do their stuff here!
Not much going on, sure wish spring would get here, soon, smoothly (no storms, so sudden heat wave or storms that ruin the early blooms) also want to win the lottery or at least, Publishers Clearinghouse.....
Wow, RR - I didn't know there was an 'easy' cobbler receipe. For me, easy qualifies as already made when I buy it! I know I know!! I do grow my own sprouts though!
Darius, your dream reminds me of a wonderful one I had of my dear Granny after she passed away years ago. It was such a comfort to me!! Even though it was a 'dream' I knew there was a bit more to it than that.
Nicole
First, Darius - I'm so sorry for your loss and know that I'm thinking of you.
Secondly - wow - you don't check in for a couple of days and you miss A LOT! I was busy this weekend - emergency cat to vet Saturday am.
Willow got bit on the tail or something during her play fights with Stubby and we caught it before it infected. She's a 'tail up' type of cat - and Sat am DH noticed she was holding it down and tucked under her. We examined and she was extremly displeased when we touched her tail - so off to vet we went. One day of anitibiotics and she's back to her normal self. Then did laundry and cooked and did dishes. Yesterday - I got all my winter sowing done and outside. We'll see what happens. And I repotted 4 plants and rearranged my jungle bathroom, plus more laundry and straightening. So - I was busy. Oh also forgot I worked on budget yesterday (blah, yuck!). So - I'm sorry haven't been here - but you see why.
Hope all have a great day and I'll stop by again later!
Marcia
I potted 6 more of the brug cuttings so I must have close to 30. Some will go to the GA RU. However, I lost a few and of course, the ones that I only had 1 cutting. Ecuador pink, Rosamond, KBG, Grand Marnier, and Silver Springs. Immediately one of the brug nuts said she had 2 of them and offered to send them to me so I'm back in business!
Good morning! Ah yes, a cup of tea and let me see what else to go with it......
Darius, the loss of your dear uncle is so sad. My sympathy goes over the miles to you. I'm glad the issue with your other family member is resolved.
I was gone to our regional endurance riders convention from Friday until after dark yesterday, still feel a bit tired after all the driving, sitting, hurrying, visiting, and driving home. The convention includes a trade show, business meetings, educational lectures, awards banquet and long hours. And you all know what different hours, different level of activity, different level of activity and different food does to your system..... It was over in Portland and I am on the other side of the state, so 5-6 hours each way. Friends met me part way and went over with me, then they got a ride home with somebody else because I was going visiting Sunday morning. Lenjo from DG lives about 25 miles from the convention so I went to her house and she gave me a bunch of dahlias. They have a berry farm and went into the dahlia business as a sideline, but are not getting much for their efforts so are discontinuing that. She wants to find homes for all these beauties. I brought home a lot but didn't make a dent in her supply.
MarciaB, I also was overwelmed by how many posts happened when I was gone 3 days. I read them all and decided to just start from scratch because there is no way to catch up.
Time to get my day started. Back later.
GOOD Morning everyone! Sure is good to see those faces that have been been missing over the weekend.
Sarv...We don't deposits and return on the soda bottles and cans here in WI, but I recycle mine for sowing seeds and starting cuttings. :D I guess in a way it's nearly the same as returning them and getting gardening money...I just save by not having to buy the containers again. LOL
Nicole...Don't worry about not being able to keep up. I'm just happy to see people check in and say "Hi".
Jo...Those grandkids sure get our 'number' in a hurry don't they? hahaha I've used a couple of those boxed cobbler mixes too...but I usually add an extra can of pie filling to mine (and maybe a little butter) that way it looks like a whole lot more in the pan. :-D
WoodSpirit...Save me some cuttings of those brugs! (Maybe you shouldn't do that. If I get one more thing that has to be wintered over indoors my DH will have a fit! LOL)
Marcia G. Boy do I know what you're saying there...I've got that "HURRY UP SPRING" chant going on in my head too. I don't think seeing those robins last week helped it very much either. ;-)
Marcia B...Ahhhhh poor kitty. Our Sadie is one of those "tail up" kitties, too. I don't think I've ever seen her without the 'flag'. We used to gauge our Yellow Lab's "energy level" by how she held her tail. "Oh, she's not *that* tired...her tail is only HALF way down." Sorta like a gas gauge. LOL
Mary, I'm surprised you managed to get away from home or hasn't the lambing begun yet? Is your friend selling the dahlias? I love to get some of the large ones.
Well, it's a typical northern winter morning here in Wisconsin. A "bright" cloudy sky with fine snow falling. It may threaten to tun to rain/freezing rain a bit later, but I'm not too worried about that. DH is making BBQ from some leftover roast for dinner with coleslaw homemade fries. There's even some left over pecan pie for dessert...help yourself if you're hungry. :-)
Yesterday, I did serious damage to my garden budget for spring. hehehe I orderd a couple more heat mats for the seeds I have to start indoors, some seedling fertilizer, a soil meter, all of my veggie seeds and I bought *me* a Valentines Day present. :-D I deserve it! I got one of those Weeping Pussy Willows I've wanted for a long time. I have no idea where I'm going to put it, but it'll probably be kept in pretty pot until early fall when I've had a chance to move it around.
I did a little comparison shopping between Gardener's Supply and Park's. I was totally amazed that the heat mats at Gardener's were a good 40% higher than Parks! :-O
Has anyone used the Yellow Sticky Traps to get rid of fungus gnats? I've read somewhere that you can make you own...anyone tried *that*? How did they work?
That's it for this morning. Time to get my arse in gear and get something done around here. Hope your day is DEEEE-lightful!
~julie~
Well, my Blueberry Cobbler was a big hit....my Son in law calls it a Cuppa-cuppa-cuppa Cobbler...cause you use a cup of everything. My DD used to win Blue ribbons in 4-H club with this recipe. I put it in the DG Cookbook if anyone wants it.
http://davesgarden.com/cookbook/viewentry.php?rid=244
The recipe was first given to me about 1953 by my DH's aunt that ran a Dairy Farm and didn't have too much time for "frills". We like it hot with ice cream.
Today I go to a computer class at Church...A guy is giving it for us "oldsters"...not one in the class under 60 I think...he is a good teacher, and I may just get to know something!!
Julie keep me posted on that weeping pussy willow! I have that on my envy list too! I would love to know how it does for you.
Betty, I want a Brug! Don't tell anyone but I've never had one! I can't decide what to grow for the RU myself. I have tons of annual seeds, hollyhocks, rudbeckias, etc etc but I won't start mine until mid Feb. I hate to report! Lazy I know but this year I bought some 5" plastic pots so I should be good. Any suggestions? I am going to root some Rosemary but that's the only thing I've decided on.
Marica, your kitty was very lucky!! My dog got out one night (you may have seen this in Pets) and the end result was she had to her her's amputated. She's perfectly fine now though!
Darius, where are you??
Hey RR - can I do an SASE for some of that?? :) Recipe or no I still don't wanna cook! lol
Nicole
Here I am for another cup of tea AND some of Jo's cobbler, oh yummy yummy! Julie, the BBQ with potatoes and cole slaw sounds good, maybe I will bring home something from the store today that needs the BBQ treatment. The guys used up most of the leftovers over the weekend while I was gone, so now I have to start cooking again.
No lambs yet, but I will be helping give the ewes a pre lambing trim, bellies and hineys, it helps us see what is happening when they start lambing, helps the lambs find the lunchbox easier, and is much cleaner. The whole sheep shearing comes later in late spring. Right now it is snowing so they'll need those coats for a while. The first lambs are due March 1 but we'll start watching them about 5 days before that.
I had an interesting salad lunch while I was at the convention. They called it an orchard salad, and it had shredded lettuce, feta cheese, apples, nuts, bacon bits and maybe a couple other things I don't remember (visiting at the time!) and had a mild dressing that might have been yogurt. I should try to make that while it is still more or less fresh in my mind.
If you would like to contact my friend about dahlias go to the member page on DG, find Lenjo, and send her an email. Right now these are still in the ground but it has been a mild winter so they are ok. She has an acre or so with a row about every 4 feet, lots of different types and lots of color and size variety. This spring they plan to plow under whatever is left, yep, that is sad. Below is a pricture I took a couple of years ago in the fall when they were past their prime but still very impressive!
Last year I had a lot of aphids in my gh and used some of the sticky traps. You could easily make your own with yellow paper, double faced tape and some wire with a twist at the top to hold it up off the ground. The bugs stuck to the double faced tape that was holding the bubble insulation, we didn't use enough of it and the weight of the insulation pulled away from it leaving the tape on the gh wall to get covered with bugs. So many things are learned by accident if we just take time to look. Bugs are attracted to yellow they say, but then they put amber light shades on yard lights because they don't attract so many bugs. Something wrong with this picture but I haven't figured out what.
Thanks for the goodies, see you later.
Love that:
[Bugs are attracted to yellow they say, but then they put amber light shades on yard lights because they don't attract so many bugs.]
Just another of life's curiosities. They abound. Why we do things one way and not another. I dunno, Why?
Oh my it would be so hard to plow under such beauty. Wonder how my dahlia and canna are doing tucked away in their peat box in the cellar? Really doesn't matter at this point, I'm to busy to go and look and won't know what I'm looking at either. LOL
I'd have some of that cobbler if there's any left. Need to eat something while the washer runs the nighties and such that I need to pack later today. LOL - oh my the trash guys are here and I've another bag to go. Later ~Blooms
Hi everyone,
Just breezing through to see everyone is OK. I haven't seen Darius for a day or so, in any of the forums, do hope that severe weather hasn't got to her.
I have just installed a teach yourself Spanish program on the PC. I've had it 4 years, it was a present, and only just got this far! I thought it might be useful if I could translate what all the various tradespeople are saying. Then I might end up with my light switch in the right place!
Its chilly out here and we have a severe winter weather warning. Texas is supposed to be warm - at least thats what I was told!!
Pass the cofee pot - I need the warmth over here, not to mention the caffeen!
Carol
She posted here yesterday am and has posted on other threads today. She's going 'over the mtn' today for some groceries - more yummies to bake. :) 'Spect she'll be back this aft. some time.
I'm here, it's just a biscotti baking day as I have orders to fill.
Glad about that, just didn't want to learn you had had a problem three days too late to send a search party! :>)
Hope there will be some left over Biscotti for us GOBs.
I would also like to add my sympathy on your loss Darius.
Carol

Thanks, Carol... and everyone else for the sympathy.
Darius, I know the hardest part is not getting to say goodbye.
Yes, that's always the hardest part, Blooms. But I feel I did get to say goodbye on a spiritual level.
Oh that is delicious! Thanks! I think it calls for Hot Chocolate to wash it down, then all thats missing is the roaring log fire - these gas immitations don't have the same effect!
Just dashing out again for more bird seed, must be a bad spell on the way because they are emptying the feeders as fast as I fill them. It is birds, not squirrels, just houndreds of them.
I'll pop back later just to check on that biscotti - now I might just have to go and do some baking when I get back!
Carol
I LOVE BISCOTTI!!!!!!!! Made a choco chip - cranberry one that is to die for!! Tried a lemen walnut one and didn't care for it. Would love an orange one..... I'll take 5 please - pardon my pigginess today!!
Wasted the whole day today - went to the huff and puff place, then out to the movies!! Saw - oh my gosh, I forgot the name!!! Oh well, it was good!! Is that a senior moment or what?? I'll have to go find the ticket stub. Oh, now I remember 'as good as it gets' (at least I think that was the name!!)
gotta go hit the shower - don't want to miss Fear Factor!!
Whoeee! I went searching in the freezer for anything possible for supper and found an overlooked package of frozen cooked Cajun Shrimp that JustMeLia had made at the KYRU. There weren't many, but it rounded out my supper... Yea!!
Everything sounds so yummy, I will just take a bit of each. Darius, the biscotti look wonderful. I made some once, was very tasty, looked a bit "not uniform slices" type; but may try again. It takes just a bit longer than the mix and drop stuff that I usually do.
Marcia B-glad that the kitty is OK. I get so worried when one of my furkids gets sick, or even has to go in for regular check-ups.
RR -going to check on the cobbler recipe.
MaryE-please share with us if you get the salad mix fixed, sounds great and I love feta. Thanks for the info on the dahlias-may check in with her.
Doing some looking for different house, so not sure what to do about adding more plants, I would move what I have (with lots of help)..but feel a bit of in a holding pattern as all the wonderful plant catalogs come in.
Yellow sticky traps, I now have them in all indoor plants. Transplants from this fall brought in fungus gnats, the plants died, the gnats spread to orchids etc. :( The traps are working fine, will use my catalog coupon from Gardeners supply to get Tanglefoot and make my own, also will get that fungus stuff for the water. I have enough problems in the summer with noseeums, don't need them in the winter.
Will catch up later, hugs and goodies to everyone.
Me again. Yes, I did make that salad and there is some left. At the last minute I thought about the bacon bits, but it tasted good with shredded lettuce, chopped celery, chopped fresh brocolli, a few walnuts, an apple and plain yogurt for dressing. We added the feta at the table. My hubby said I could make it again.
Darius, Cajun shrimp! what a find! Those freezers do yield some treasures, mine is big and deep and I'm sure it has some great stuff hiding deep in the corners. I keep saying I am going to clean it.
This afternoon while I was in town I ran into my sister so we went to have coffee and talk for about an hour. We seldom go to each other's houses but meet in town, have lunch, exchange things and catch up on the news. She lives 45 miles the other side of town and I live 20 miles another way. It takes almost 2 hours to drive from one of our homes to the other so we meet in the middle. She and her husband have a cattle ranch and they will be calving while I am busy with lambs.
While I was in town I went to the thrift store and got a molded plastic lawn chair for 75 cents, and a cute little pottery house with a lid for 10 cents that is so ugly it is cute. Probably it is some kid's art project, it has a name handwritten on the bottom along with 98. It will be cute with a cactus growing in it and the lid propped up beside it. When I get it all together I'll post a picture.
Thanks somebody for the reminder on the bird seed, the feeders were looking kind of empty and they can be filled by porchlight so the tweeties will have breakfast waiting. Today I got a good look at one of our unusual ones, he is a mountain chickadee. We have mostly sparrows and house finches in the winter.
See you tomorrow.
Hello, anybody home? Is there hot water, tea bags, goodies?
Davesgarden was offline for a few hours today due to a backhoe severing the cable. Dave got us on a different server and is busy restoring data, so hopefully all of the missing posts will be here soon and even in their right places. Meanwhile, it might look like I am alone in the kitchen.
A few minutes ago I had this post about ready to send and my cat walked across the keyboard. Result: I was back to my desktop! What did she step on? delete? My ignorance of this machine is awesome!
This morning I helped my neighbor with the sheep trimming project. The ewes were very stubborn about going down that chute toward the clippers, especially the old wise ones. Thankfully most of them are more cooperative at lambing time. I think we need to break one of this year's lambs to lead and then since sheep follow sheep maybe they would follow her down the chute instead of us having to almost carry them. They have a very low center of gravity and outweigh us. You can bet I didn't need a session on the healthrider machine today and I will be sore tomorrow.
See you in the morning.
That's a major hefty lift - workout I couldn't even try with my back ooh yeah lifting is how I got "my" back.
Dave did well with getting it back up this fast - he is amazing.
Just to say you not alone in kitchen /:-) ~Blooms
I am glad that I missed the down time-major bummer there. A mess for Dave, Terry etc and I don't imagine the backhoe worker is any too happy either. Went house hunting today-saw one with wonderful garden, but would take a bit of $$ to make more accessible-dratted steps.
Think I will indulge in a snack, tea and toast anyone? Didn't get any baking done today.
Will be doing the meeting stuff with two of my sisters soon-we live just far enough apart to make traveling a bit time consuming, which is too bad-we have a riot together.
Up for tea, see you all tomorrow.
cold, drab and overcast here, with threat of snow again, but no mention of an ice storm.
I cheered myself up by perusing catalogs and ordering 2 rose bushes.
Finished the frittata; the chopped water chestnuts in it are weird but work great.
I was late in filing one year's income taxes. They added .08 interest, lol.
Oh, Betty - speaking of Roses.....
:(((
Remeber the gazillion cuttings you sent me? Well, they were all doing famously well and I was SO proud of myself (that's what I get.) The poor dears put leaf after leaf out but even as they were doing well I could tell they needed either some REAL sunlight, or to go to bed for the winter.
One by one they all passed away, quietly I may add, they didn't suffer I don't think. I am thinking if I had started the poor dears in the Spring they may have stood a chance.
Needless to say I am terribly disappointed! I don't handle gardening failure very well!
I did want to confess to you though. Be easy on me!
Nicole
I am totally confused....I've been down with the flu since last Thursday, and didn't post anything until Monday, and that was just to keep in touch. Then I put in a brief note yesterday, and today neither of those postings appear at all. Was I delusional? I swear I haven't been that laid out in years! I could barely get out of bed, and couldn't think straight at all. Was positive that the reason my body ached all over so bad was the fault of our mattress so I kept moving into different positions ...! My head was floating somewhere over my neck but not attached apparently....and I had this horrible nonproductive cough! I didn't figure out until Monday that it was the flu....that must have been when my brain actually started to function.............I hope nobody else gets that particular bug. I didn't get a flu shot this year, first they had the vaccine, then they didn't, then they did, and now that they finally have it, it's too late. And the gov't wants to be in charge of our prescription benefits....?? be afraid, be very afraid!! So, pass that coffee pot and I'll have a biscotti if there's any left. Julie that robin looked pretty cold. I know I posted something about him, but I don't see it. Maybe Dave is censoring me for being naughty......
No, you're not delusional. DG was down for awhile because someone cut a cable with a backhoe. when it came back up, there were some repeated posts and others missing for that day.
Nicole, roses have to be cut back in the spring again, so I will save some fresh cuttings for you. Do you remember which ones you wanted?
Hey Meezers! I remember your posts - I resonded to it to! The site went down yesterday - you're not crazy! LOL!!!
I hope you are feeling better!
Nicole
What a relief! Thought I was losing my mind .....! At least what's left of it....
Yes, thanks for the good thoughts... much better today, No more hot/cold/dizzy/hacking/fall-down- exhausted-from-doing-nothing spells. Well, a little hacking but not too bad. You forget how good it is to feel well when you are ill. I have to remind myself more often to pay attention to the good days when they are here!
MaryE, it's not nice to blame the kitty for deleting all your work....she was trying to help! Mine always want to add something to my posts too, the little devils, so I try to do it while they are sleeping which is about 20 our of 24 hours so it's not too difficult.
Where's Marcia, MBock and Darius? Everyone leave town??
Think I'll try something new today. Clothes. Food. See y'all later.
I'm here, mostly lurking today while I'm trying to finish up a graphic design project for a client/friend. We are on revision #22 or so, LOL.
Plus, trying to make a list of everything I really need for a month at my sister's in FL, including my computer.
I am here, just finished with the dogs-in/out-in/out etc.
Kind of dreary here and not much going on.
Think I will try to sprout the daylily seeds that I managed to develop last season- Sure wish that I had read All of hemladys' information. Maybe I will luck out, will keep folks posted.
Loking for a new place is a stess, looking at options- ACK- Change is not a top thing on my "like list" See note from yesterday.
M5-hope that you continue to feel better today.
Nicole-bummer about the roses, just hate when that happens.
HI and hugs to everyone-will try to check in later.
Hi All,
M5 Hope you are feeling loads better now.
I was zonked out most of yeaterday because I had to get up at 3:30, so I thought I was being totally incompetant when I couldn't find DG! Grandson had Gromets put in his ears yesterday and had to be at the Med Centre at 6:30 - we were looking after his sister so had to be at their place by 5 - hence the early rising. Of course when you have to get up early you don't get to sleep!!
Zombies all round!
Carol
Hi guys...I'm only half here but I'll check in as 'present and accounted for' at the moment. Been feeling a little off kilter for the past few days. Nothing I could put my finger on, just didn't want to have to lift that finger unless I had to...not enough energy. :-)
Had a Dr's appointment yesterday...I was supposed to go Monday but forgot. (Oooops! ;-)) It was just a DM (diabetes management) session...everything was SO good that the doctor even bypassed yelling at me for the holiday weight gain. hehehehe Would you believe that I was so nervous about the appointment that I didn't even to Doc that I wasn't really feeling all that 'fine'. Oh lordy...I'm losing it big time. :-D
Today we're having a wonderful homemade soup that DH cooked up yesterday. No recipe...he never uses one of those...just boiled up a nice chunk of beef with onions, garlic, and lots of broth. Let it cook all afternoon then added humongous amounts of fresh veggies (celery, carrots, tomatoes, zuchinni and cabbage) and cooked it for the rest of the evening. A little later, we'll add a bit more cabbage then I'll take half the soup and put MY potatoes in. (He says he doesn't like potatoes in his soup...Well *I* do! But I'm not too crazy about *his* bay leaf. Tuff! I got it anyway.) :-( Oh well...that's not going to spoil the fact that I'm really looking forward to supper. :-D
And to go with it...I'm making M5's Rustic Country bread! YEAH!!! It's in the middle of the 1/4 turns now and that dough is looking positively GORGEOUS! (Thanks Sheila!)
Ooops...buzzzer just went off...time to turn the dough. :-D
Later,
~julie~
