Julie on my still - dial up - and 8 year old 'puter everything is slow so I'm not a good indicator of that! I'm just hoping when I finally get RR my computer will be able to handle it!! HA HA!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

erk, the snow/sleet/freezing rain is supposed to start tonight instead of Saturday night. I was in the grocery stores on the way home. At one, you had to wait for a shopping cart. At the BIG new Ingles, you couldn't even park anywhere in front of the store, you had to go down to Kmart. I didn't even wait for a cart in the lobby there, I just got one from the parking lot. Took me 3-1/2 hours to get groceries and drive home.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Not surprising, Betty. I thought about getting some bananas today because I need the potassium but then I remembered the storm predictions and there was NO way I'd fight the store crowds for just bananas. I fortunately shopped day before yesterday in Franklin, and today located my oil lamp. I'm pretty set for whatever hits us... I hope.

Right now it looks like a possibility of more sleet/snow and less freezing rain, but Hey, what do they know?

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

I've been thinking about you two while watching the weather alerts for your area. Don't look good to me. I think we're supposed to get some light snow tomorrow, but other than that we're pretty just 'winter' here.

It's homemade pizza night again tonight.

Someone's at the door...

~julie~

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I sure hope it snows and doesn't sleet. The heavy ice causes the power lines to come down and we're out of power for days, sometimes, when that happens.

(Zone 8b)

I do hope all you GOBs don't lose your power, its miserable enough when the weather gets rough without freezing in the dark. make sure you know where your essential medications are just in case.
Fingers crossed

Hi all - here's that thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/448913/

Kooger and Blooms, I suppose "bs" wouldn't be too far off the mark with regard to my horticultural blooper on that thread, but it has been one safari I don't mind having pushed along with stupid questions. And isn't reality sometimes best sculpted with unrealistic questions?

Julie, I certainly haven't been sculpting my realty with the vacuum cleaner. Pretty soon I'll be sowing seeds in the moots, unless they start meowing first LOL

Darius and Wood, hope tonight's weather goes gently for you two and that we all take special care of ourselves so that we can enjoy the coming spring that is not so far away - together. I'm so very much looking forward to sharing it with you all.

NCgarden, I don't know about you, but being female, I wasn't allowed to take shop in school. I was forced to take home economics, in one class of which 30 of us shared one box of Betty Crocker Blueberry Muffin Mix with the lesson plan being to produce one tray of muffins.

Now, moving forward 15 years to newly married with a "new" "handyman's" special - we bought it for the view - heehee. I trusted my menfolk. Now, if not for my menfolk, our house would not be standing today, so I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but with the house in such bad shape, my pleas - based on instinct, not on knowhow - to fix the foundation first were not heard. Years later the county condemned our efforts and only the oldest part was allowed to stand. Ladies, trust your instincts!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yeah, I'm pretty well prepared, too. Have located oil lamp and fuel, kitchen matches, batteries, flashlight, battery-operated weather radio, 3 gals of drinkable water and plenty in the creek for flushing, cooked food that's okay cold, 8 portable tanks of oxygen, and 2 loaves of just-baked bread. How much better can it get?

So if I don't show up, it's a power outage, maybe for days.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

It's 3:15 and I'm up. Spousal unit said it started snowing a little at 2 a.m. I can't believe it's 22 deg. and we're getting sleet. If this would turn to snow, then we'd probably have no problems. But if this sleet keeps up for the whole day and into the night, we'll lose our electricity for sure.
It wasn't supposed to start until 9 a.m.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Bluespiral it didn't even occur to me to want to take shop until I was out of high school. My mom berated me for taking typing although boy am I glad I did!!! Wouldn't be able to talk to you folks quite as quickly - loL!!

I didn't take home ec either though - oh well!! I could type and play a saxaphone. At least one of which I can still do! ha!

Just checking in to see how you all in in the Southeast are surviving this morning.

I discovered that I *love* to go to bed! Lately I've been dreaming (literally!) of my garden. The dreams are so vivid I can smell the flowers and feel the dirt. Now would you call that a bad case of 'cabin fever' or what? LOL (Oh, and my garden in my dreams doesn't suffer from lack of water or sunshine...ain't that great!)

What's on the table for snacks today? Ooooo, I'll take a shot at that coffee cake. No, not that one...I'd like a piece of the cheese one with that nice buttery crumble topping. Yep, that's the one. Thanks. Sure, I'd love a refill on the coffee while you're at it.

Has anyone noticed that seed and plant merchants can't get their act together? Just when you *need* reliable information on germination times, light and moisture requirements, time to bloom from seed AND hardy zones, you find several *different* sets. I guess that means "Whatever works for you." hehehe

Oh well...

Talk at ya later...

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

the sleet sleet turned to snow, thank goodness. We have about 2 inches now at 9:30.
I am having Orange Breakfast Ring. Here's the recipe ( this is an easy recipe for folks who don't want to do the entire thing from scratch).
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons grated orange rind
2 (12-oz) cans refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
1/3 cup butter
1 (3-oz) package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar
2 tablespoons orange frozen concentrate, thawed
Combine sugar and orange rind. Separate biscuits; dip each in butter, and coat with sugar mixture. Stand biscuits on sides, overlapping edges, in a 9-inch tube pan. Bake at 350 deg. for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove ring from pan and invert on serving platter. Combine cream cheese and powdered sugar mixing until smooth. Add orange concentrate, stirring well. Spoon mixture over top while ring is hot. Serve bread warm. Yield: one 9-inch coffee cake.
(I suppose the frozen biscuits you can buy now would work but would have to be thawed first, I presume).

Ugh, ice storm - hate those darn things - hope all in the midst of it are hanging on!

Just had a mid morning snack - a soft shelled taco - yum it was so good. There's enough left for a couple more - any takers??? My eating is out of control again (just downed a handful of choco chips!!)

Need to go do something with the hair sticking up all over the place. Sun keeps peeking out from the clouds, but it is supposed to go under completely this afternoon.

Speaking of dreams - I spent last night at a spa and it was wonderful (dream spa that is!!!) My feet even felt smoother this morning~~ LOL

Well, I love the idea of a picnic wedding, they happen in the parks around here fairly often. It's such a wonderful ceremony to hold outdoors.

and I think I'll go imitate your spa in my bathtub at some point today. After I make a stab at gathering a wardrobe for warmer climes, do up the dishes, get something off cyber to eat and check out a few more threads. LOL

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Silly me I was over rambling in the last thread and realized no body was there, and I had this on my watch list too. So I cut and pasted the following, it's good practice:

I was too tired to post over coffee. Woke up last night at 2 with a bad dream which put me in a bad attitude. Played some spades but still took me a couple hours to get back down.

Took the dogs for a walk, then went for a bike ride and got some clippings and a potted plant from a neighbor. Trying to ID them now.
Looked in the fridge and all I see is that HUUUGGGEEE" pot of chicken soup that no matter how much I eat, it gets fuller and fuller (and there is no pasta in it). I guess I better bag some up and freeze it because I am souped out and I need a good piece of meat to eat.

Wide awake now and need to go get some of the "Good" potting soil to put my seedlings in. I don't think they like that discount stuff I've been buying. Then I need to clip the neighbors vines and ficus back off my fence to give room for my passie to grow. (I know, I know, I didn't get to it the other day)

Happy1 gave me some coleus cuttings from her Worlds Record 8 foot coleus when we visited yesterday. I have just the place for it. Do ya think I can beat that worlds record? :^)))

I haven't seen my granddaughter since Christmas and I found out her mother is taking her and moving back to Deltona, an hour north of Orlando. :^(((( I can understand why, costs too much to raise 2 kids down here. She can't afford the real estate prices here. (Sigh)

I sure hope yall catching that flu bug are taking care, getting rest and, oh, hey, ya want some of this chicken soup? Help yourself, there sure is plenty to go round.

Molly

Morning everybody, well - it is here, if barely. lunch is in the zapper and I've been reading all 'round the garden. Here's a pic of me and my two girls as 'Spin was getting ready to leave for Cal last weekend.

I passed the camera to 'Spin's husband and shoulda checked the background before we stood where we did. Doesn't flatter any of us but it's an accurate rendition. LOL -

That's 'Spin on the right in her beret and Jini, the one who lives here in Moab, on the left. I stepped in a hole and she had to grab me to keep me upright. Caught on camera of course.

sarv, sometimes we stay friends with people out of habit. Just hard to break off a long time relationship. But when a friend actually become emotionally abusive, I have learned to just drift away...

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Hello, everyone!

I'll just have hot tea and some conversation... thanks. I do have rolls rising... will bring some by later. Not very pretty but my first try at this recipe, which I will have to tweak.

Right now I seem to be in a tiny microclimate that has not received the major ice everyone else around me in the SE has, or even the snow that woodspirit is getting just an hour east. We did have a little ice this morning and no doubt all this precipitation will freeze overnight but so far not enough ice to bring down tree limbs and interrupt power.

I trudged up to the road to get the mail and there's no ice on the road. Of course, it's a gravel road so some precipitation seeps through the surface.

Betty, your Orange Breakfast Ring sounds interesting... was it tasty?

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Woods...that recipe sounds like a good one when I'm in a hurry and just want something that tastes good. I've copied it off...thanks!

Sarv...that taco doesn't exactly sound yummy for a morning snack...for me anyway. I'd rather have PIZZA!! (YUMMM :-D) ~Any friend who doesn't understand the reasoning behind a 'family only' wedding...and who has feelings hurt enough not to come to the reception...well...I'd say there was something lacking in the friendship. I'm with your husband, even though I have a hard time telling and showing people where to go, too. (Don't let it get your goat, it's not worth the cost of ulcer meds...trust me! ;-))

Morning Blooms! Loved that pic of you, 'Spin' and JIni...

Molly...I'll gladly store some of that soup for ya. Problem is, I can't promise you'll get it back when you're in the mood for it. I'm afraid I'd have to split it up between the 'sickies' (flu season arrived with a vengeance!) in this family. :-D How about sending ME a chunk of that Coleus??? I Love to have it to block the view of the neighbor's house (J/K The neighbors are my kids...and it wouldn't do a thing to keep them home!)

Darius...those rolls look super. Are they from *the* recipe? :-D

Glad you guys didn't the ice as bad as was predicted.

HEY anyone playing EUCHRE this afternoon? I'm sitting here totally *wasting* an afternoon playing on the computer...haven't gotten nerve enough to go to the online game room. Nor do I have the time to get hooked on the game again. If any of you Euchre players want to meet online sometime, let me know...I'd love to play.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Julie, the recipe is close, just no egg. I may do an egg the next time.

I thought I took a photo as the rolls cooled after baking but it doesn't show up on my camera.

They still are not pretty, buy certainly tasty! Please have one while they are warm...

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Ooooo....those are SOOO good...especially with butter dripping off as I take my bite. Pass the honey! Thanks Darius...

~julie~

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Doesn't get much better than fresh hot rolls with butter and honey, LOL.

(Zone 8b)

Sarv - some people have no sense of others feelings - if she doesn't want to come I don't suppose you'll miss her! Just make sure she knows what a great time you all had afterwards.

Glad you frozen folks are still with us. That bread looks super, if theres any left I wouldn't mind trying it with my Golden Syrup!

Just had a thrill, a flock of Cedar Waxwings eating Indian Hawthorn Berries just down the road. I was out walking and of course I'd forgotten my camera. Why do you only see these things when you have no way of recording it!!

Lovely pic Blooms, looks like a happy crew.

Is that coffee still hot? Well in that case perhaps i could just sit here a wee while!

Carol

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Good of you to join me for a spot of coffee, Carol. It was getting lonesome here... Looks like everyone else is busy elsewhere. The rolls are good aren't they? (Even if not pretty, LOL.) What's "golden syrup"?

Haven't seen any Cedar Waxwings here yet. Pooh.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

I *love* the waxwings! Whether Cedar or Bohemian...they're both such wonderful little birds...and SO elusive in my area. But I always know when the mulberries are ripe they'll be among the first to show up. And it seems like they come from NOWHERE!

I'm 'sorta' here, Darius. I'm still wasting time playing cards by myself. hehehe

~julie~

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I'm in an out to Darius, playing cards over at Uproar. Had to take a break to eat tho.

Molly

P.S. Tell ya later what baaaad thing I did today. lol

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

the orange coffee ring was much better once I substituted orange concentrate for orange juice. I wanted a lot of punch to the frosting.
darius, it pretty well stopped here too. The northern parts of our counties and counties further north will get more than us. Oddly, the temperature went up after dark so the snow is melting and I can hear it dripping everywhere.
I have a great recipe for a heart-shaped cake for Valentine's cake made with puffed pastry and pudding. Will try to post it if i can get it together. It's really simple.

Hi Again
Popping in and out at the moment!
Golden syrup is a sweeter form of Black treacle - (molasses?) It was originally a biproduct of the sugar cane industry. I suspect it is a British peculiarity!! I've introduced DIL and the grandchildren to it and it goes down a treat - on waffles or in oatmeal porridge and its wonderful on new bread!

I'll sneak a peak before church and then will be gone most of the day. DGD's dance program in the afternoon, then out for supper for 3rd son's 21st birthday last Wed. How's Mon. lookin? (I better brush up, been easy 10 yrs. since I've played.)

HI all, missed you yesterday. Sore paws, so stayed off the computer. Sounds like busy times, stay away from negative folks and don't take guff from them., watch out for shared germs, please pass some of those goodies here.
Just finished off a large bowl of popcorn while losing another game of WordThief-rats.
Brought down my purple phal, that is in bloom, have two more sending up stalks. The large ones keep busy, the smaller plants are stuck in orchid limbo-they are from my sister and I have no idea what they look like-hoping to be surprised soon.
Hope those facing bad weather stay safe-keeping my fingers crossed for an early spring. I am done with winter, thank you very much.

(Zone 7a)

Darius, loved your stone and ice prism over in the photo forum. Now, doesn't that beat swatting 'squeeters and noseeums in 100 degrees plus inda shade? Seriously, glad to hear everyone got through this most recent "burp" of winter okay.

We've got all kinds of icy slurp coming down here right now. Fortunately the temperatures are expected to rise pretty soon, so hopefully our hill won't be too exciting for too long. Julie, let me know if any of Molly's chicken soup is left over.

Okus, cedar waxwings are a rare sight for us, but on a blue day in late October we spied quite a bunch in a field of goldenrod and asters gone to seed. One hickory on the highest point was still blazing gold, where we first noticed them. Quite a treat.

Woodspirit, I hope you post that Valentine's recipe - DH will be so shocked if I surprise him with it. I'm not known for my cooking exploits.

Blooms, loved the herons(?) and turtles - quite a watermelon safari.

Very lovely river walk today - the snow had receded enough that walking was not too hard. The stark black and white set off details of fissured bark and dendritic water patterns - surprised a heron and visited with a very laid-back beaver.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Good Morning All,

I made the coffee, I know it's early for a Sunday, but you know me, when I wake up, I git up. So sit down and talk a spell.

I said I was a baaad girl yesterday. I really had no intention of doing what I did. The plan was to get work supplies and stop off at the HD and get some MG potting soil for my seedlings and some plastic plant tags for the round ups. Well I got distracted at the Kactus Korral there at HD. Bought half a dozen succulents. I also bought 3 packages of caladium bulbs. I was looking for a ginger plant variegated with white green and red. HD didn't have it so off I went to Gore's nursery.

Gore's didn't have it either, and yet I still walked away $50 poorer. I got 3 good sized plants, a Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, a Tea Rose bush and a blooming Leonitis, and oh yes, some fertilizers for several kinds of plants.

I think having merely the task of pulling weeds up wasn't enough to do, I had to make more work for myself. I did get almost all the plants in the ground.

Today, I must try to sit myself down and calculate those proposals for jobs I looked at on Friday.

I've been watching the weather comments around the country from our members. Seems to be doing a little bit of everything everywhere, and people are getting blooms in places that surprises me for being the middle of winter.

Off for another cup now, then get to work.

Molly

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Yes, we dodged the bullet here. It was 35 deg when I got up at 7 a.m., lots of sunshine now and everything melting. My daughter is bringing her son up to our house. He has to do a volcano for a school project and his granddad (my spousal unit) has crafted this incredible thing on a wire grid. He even has a delivery system for the vinegar and baking soda to make it erupt. Will post a picture later.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Except for the creek being a tad higher today, you'd never know that yesterday's brush with winter ever happened. Today the birds are having a field day with the seed I threw on the ground yesterday afternoon but I shall have to fill the feeders today. It's overcast but I'm hoping for some sun.

My uncle passed away quietly last evening. I had a lovely spot in a dream last night where my uncle, my dad, and my godfather were all happily reunited. They were such a close trio as young men. I guess they were just waiting for David to join them.

The snit I had with his neice by marraige about communication has also been resolved. (She was mis-informed by the woman I spoke with at the hospital and thought I wanted to intefere in his care.)

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Darius, my sincere condolences on the lose of your uncle. I'm glad you had your dream...though it's likely it wasn't as much a dream as you might think. There have several such incidents in my life and one in particular comes to mind right now. I was wakened early one morning by someone tugging on my toes. I sat up in bed with a start and looked around. I checked the clock and it as was too early to get up. The tugging of the toes was something that only my Aunt and my Mom did to tease me. Several hours later my cousin called me to say that our Aunt had passed away that morning. I asked her when it happened and she told me about 4:15 a.m. It was precisely the time I saw on the clock when I was woke up. I like to think it was Aunt Ferne saying "see ya later."

Boy after watching the news last night, you guys were pretty lucky *not* to have had the power outages and icey conditions that hit all around you.

Today, I'm trying to sort out my "wish lists" from my "need lists" and it's proving very difficult! I *want* it all! LOL

There's a some fresh fruit on the counter...sometimes I absolutely must have my bananas and oranges this time of year. It's when I start craving green onions and radishes that I know I can't handle winter any longer! :-D
