Coffee and...part 2 :-D

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Now I really feel plain, I havent had any fun socks like that in too long. I guess this payday Im off to the stores to see what I can find. If Im lucky I can find a pair like Darius', those are cool. Usually I run around in my tennys, I used to have cow slippers that when you pressed the ear they would moo, I loved those slippers but unfortunatly so did my dogs, I figured that out when I came home to one of them in shreds, wahh. Next time Ill keep them in the closet t when they arnt on my feet.

Yesterday was a beautiful wonderful 60+ degrees and today its cold wet and super rainy 30+, blech. Its a good thing it started getting cold because I was getting close to digging up some hosta and moving them around. I know thats not a good idea this time of year but the urge was getting so strong with all this warm weather we've been having.
Went on a garden walk in my yard yesterday and this is what I saw starting to come back.....hosta, daylily, manarda(jacob cline), black eyed susan, tulips and b-fly bush. The one huchera and hardy cyclamen are still out there and looking like its not even cold out there, unbalievable. I just covered a litle more with mulch to protect them thru the rest of the winter. I have a feeling that February here in Maryland is going to be a doozy, its been way way too nice here, I think we only had two days of frost and one snow that was only about 2 inches if that and it melted within two days. Im not looking forward to feb. bombarding us. "shiver"

That coffee smells so good and I l-o-v-e bb muffins, yum. Hey I need to add a few pounds to get me thru the winter cold. Now come spring Im going to have to work my butt off to loose it but yummy. Thank you Lord for blueberrys!

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Blueberry muffins!! I just wandered in and here they were looking at me! The socks I'm seeing on this thread are enough to wake anybody up! Does that make you soxy ladies?

The sun just came up and it is a pretty sunrise, gold this morning. The sun came up over the mountains at 7:30. We had 12 degrees overnight, no wind, no new snow but still have about 5 inches in most places. The high temp should get up near freezing today, like yesterday and the day before. My greenhouse only reached 77 yesterday because there were some clouds from time to time. The sun is so bright reflecting off the snow, I would need sunglasses if I spent much time out there. My plants are sure happy in my greenhouse. Several cacti are in bloom and others have buds.

Meezers, have you notices some unused greenhouses just standing around in back yards? I see them often, and I bet if somebody offered them a few bucks and removed it for them they would be happy to see it go. Some look ugly and are just full of junk. I would try that. Who knows? I see a few of those little church shaped ones that are fiberglass and yellowed with age that I think wouldn't admit enough light to grow your plants, but there are other types out there that maybe just need new plastic and some TLC. Check out the greenhouse forum here on DG for ideas on what you might find/build. I think a greenhouse with a coldframe next to it would be real nice if you have the room.

My son is all moved. They bought a double recliner from a neighbor of ours and took that home last evening. I had never seen one like it, love seat size but each side reclines independently, and it is the type that extends out into the room when it is reclined so it can sit close to the wall. Their house is small so this is a plus, and it was in great shape, clean, nice and squishy feeling, and has a high enough back that you can lean your head back on it when it is not reclined. Only $50. My neighbor had advertised it but nobody came to look since it was so far out in the country, so she had decided to wait until spring to try to sell it again. Then she mentioned it to me and the rest is history.

I'd better get outside and get my horses fed. See you later.

Good Morning... Julie that coffee smells heavenly! It's cooling off here, but not cold yet... but still coffee weather.

Before it gets cold, I have to figure how to get my suet cage out of the creek. I can see it in about a foot of water, just not sure how to get down to it without slipping and falling in, LOL. Don't know how it got there, was simply gone from the tree branch when I got up this morning... The woodpeckers will miss it with the cold front coming in...

They are getting ready to put my new telephone line (for the computer) underground... right through the ONE BED AND OLNY I have planted, with a zillion bulbs and a ton of perennial starts (herbs and lots of foxglove) from last summer. Ugh.

Julie, I have to laugh about the socks. I ordered 2 "grab bags" of organic socks (no choice of colors) and got one pair in each bag! That photo was taken at the KYRU by Gardenwife while I was walking around in them one morning looking for coffee.

Have a great day, y'all. I plan to stop back by later...

(Zone 8b)

Hi all - I'm in desperate need of that coffee this morning! Didn't get to bed til 2 am so I need waking up!! Our DS came over to set up a speaker system for us (Christmas present!!) and it just took forever. He wouldn't stop til he was done though, and he stayed to help clean up!! He is well trained isn't he - not sure if that was me or his DW) Boy doesn't cutting holes in the ceiling make a mess !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darius that bread sounds and smells wonderful - Awe shucks - who wants a waistline anyway! Must say the only place I've ever seen crumpets with raisins is in the USA. Back in the UK we eat them plain, hot, toasted and dripping with butter. I found a recipe with a picture if anyone is interested http://www.searchforgoodhealth.com.au/crumpet.htm
When I was small we used to toast them on the open fire using a very long handled fork. The handle was never long enough to stop your fingers getting a bit hot too, but the taste was wondeful. Being from Yorkshire, we called them Pikelets, Yorkshire like Texas is just a bit different about a lot of things!
Well I'm going to dash off now and check on my seeds, its a whole 2 days since I planted them, bet they haven't started to grow yet though.

Nahhh no granny underwear for me. When they dragged me in horizontally for my heart surgery I think I was wearing bikini undies....although it appeared that a greater shock to the surgeon was that my husband is 15 years younger than me, and Dr. Nobedsidemanner was tactless enough to say he'd never seen anyone my age married to a younger man. I wasn't drugged enough not to to look him in the eye and say "Would you have been rude enough mention it if it were a man married to a younger woman?" Fortunately for me, it was a conversation AFTER the surgery...else I might not be here LOL I mean, really!!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

HOLEY COW!! You mean he actualy had the nerve to say something like that right in front of you?! My DH is only 4 years younger than me but thats just plain rude like you said. Some people. But I guess thats no worse than this man that came up to me years ago and asked me why I was with someone like "that", my hubby is a big guy and I was only about 120 lbs at the time. I was like what in the *&^%%?! He made me speachless for a moment before I said because he loves me and I love him, and some other choice words. I shouldnt have anwered him in the first place, shoulda just spit on him but Im not a violent person so I just glared at him after I picked my jaw up off the ground. This year we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary so ppppttththt. LOL

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

D.C. That little note you *had* to put in your post about all the goodies that are "coming back"...HONESTLY! Do you *have* to rub it in? LOL (I want PICTURES!!!)

Mary...looks like the sub-zero stuff is over in your neck of the woods. eh? Yippeee! The moving is done! I'll bet you were glad to see that last load off the truck and into the house. (I'm *still* unpacking boxes from my last move. No...in fact, I'm using them as tables for holding my winter-sowing projects! LOL)

Darius...can I *watch* you get that suet feeder? :-D I'm only laughing because a few years back I was checking out our campsite and got a little *too* close to the slippery slope. Yep! I went for a swim! My heart goes out to you on the installation of that wire through the flowerbed. :-( I've been watching very carefully with my planning to make sure I saved room for the septic pumper truck, the wood delivery truck, AND the electricity and cable tunnels.

Carol...you don't have to tell me about those ceiling installations OR repairs. You should have seen the mess the repairman made fixing up cracked drywall joints around my skylights! I had plaster spattered on my windows, my bedsrpead AND my shower curtain! (I was ticked, let me tell ya!) At least your DS helped clean up the mess he made. I'll bet that sound system is nice. Thank you! for the crumpet recipe! I've got it bookmarked and just *might* try some this afternoon. (A watched pot never boils...does the same thing hold true for seed planting? LOL)

M5...what a lovely lady! Thanks for the pic! :-O I can't believe what that Dr said to you! 'Rude' is too good a word for what he did! But then again, I remember going to a chiropractor in horrible pain. He told me I was *too* fat for him to work on! Well...at that time I was a little over 200 lbs...I can't help it if HE was a 90 lb weakling! (I've lost a little weight since then...diabetes...heart trouble...kid on drugs...you know the story. ;-) but I still make TWO of THAT man...and not just in size! LOL)

D.C. You done GOOD with how you handled *your* problem...I doubt that guy would have been standing if he'd said that to me.

I think I'm off to see if I have everything to make those crumpets...I'll share! :-)

~julie~

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

lol Darius, if you figure out why it's in the creek let me know! Both of mine are MIA. Not drug off on the ground...GONE! I don't know if it's the squirrels or a raccoon or possum or what, but grrrrrrrr!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

OH! I forgot!

CRAZY SOCKS FOR EVERYONE!!!
(Would hot pink and black tiger striped bootie slippers fill the bill? LOL)
Hi Angie!
~julie~

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Julie if it were spring I wouldnt be worried but we still have 2 months of winter to go thru, Now if I lived in Florida then you could accuse me of rubbing it in,LOL. I just checked around my mailbox and some yarrow is coming up too.

I dont have any suet feeders up, I keep thinking about it but havnt gone farthre than that yet, no trees in my yard at all yet. I do have a bird feeder hung on a hook in the front yard, its now about half full but Im gonna give it another couple of days before I fill it back up, its a good sized feeder.

Darius, do they "have" to run it thru that bed? Cant they just go around it so your bulbs dont get messed up? Thats the first thing I would ask, I cant see where it would be a big deal for them to move it over a few feet.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Crazy Socks are as good as purple with a red hat anyday, LOL!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Well, I got the soggy mess/ suet feeder out of the creek.. I HAD TO, the downy's kept circling the branch where it had hung, as if to say, "Hey, I KNOW it's here somewhere!" LOL.

I have a long handled garden tool that has 3 prongs on the end, and with holding onto the few rhododendron trunks large enough to support me down close to the creek's edge, I managed to fish it out. Of course, I had to crawl back up the bank!

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Wish I had been there with a camera (ducking and running) LOL

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

D.C. only 2 more months? That puts me into the height of CABIN FEVER time! LOL But I'll be looking for that thawed piece of ground *somewhere* to plant *really* hardy something or others.

Darius...Ahhh shucks! You didn't even get wet! hehehe (I was hoping!)

~julie~

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

I had visions of Darius sending us pics of herself soaking wet...I would have suggested a rake or something to fish out the feeder but I was enjoying the mental pics too much to post it!! I've dipped myself in the swamp, river, lake etc. far too often to expect to be able to reach something without getting baptised! Uhhhh willow branches aren't nearly as strong as they look....I think the squirrels swiped it and threw it in the creek so they could have a good laugh watching you retrieve it...
I guess being a surgeon means you are technically skilled, not necessarily socially adapted....as for the other guy with his "why are you etc." comment, he deserved a piece of your mind and then some.... maybe that's his version of a come on....and don't you wonder if it ever worked?
Julie, I've got lots of bare ground but I think it's gonna be a long time before I can stick a shovel or anything else into it. Boy is it cold! Darius, sometimes when they run cable they use a skinny little digger that's only a couple inches wide, so hope for the best and maybe they won't mess up the entire bed. We'll cross our fingers for you.

OK I'm off to the post office, brrrrrrrrr....

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

M5, you are sure a delightful looking woman, that doctor needs a hard poke in the belly and obviously failed his bedside manner course. hmmph some people's kids!!!!

Not quite planting weather but when I get this biscotti fished outta the bottom of my coffee cup, I'm gonna snag a blueberry muffin and scoot outside to do a little cutting off of the dead perennial stems to make ready for new growth. I leave the stems to catch the leaves and create a mulch blanket around each plant that way.

Darius, you lucked out.... I have noticed that if there's even a chance of slipping into the water -- there I go. Ya done good. Do ya suppose the creatures know the kind of trouble we go thru to make sure they get a meal?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Ha! I didn't want to put any of you in the hospital from splitting your sides laughing at a photo of me soaking wet, shivvering to beat the band, and crawling on my belly up the steep bank!

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

M5,

Grrr, I'd have shoved that stehascope down his throat sideways. Then I would have told him, How's THAT for 15 years!!!! Muhahhahaa!

I gotta walk to the mail box- got some SASE yesterday! Yippie!

Y'all have fun hehe.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

M5...I think you got it right...those little critters *are* much smarter than we give them credit for being. I wouldn't put it past them to be laughing their little butts off! :-D

Darius...isn't it hard to shivvvvver when you're frozen? (I laughed anyway...hehehe)

Hi Blooms...Hi, Jocie...what do you mean *walk*?

Since Sheila put her pretty smile in here, I thought I'd come out from the 'darkside' and show my face too. (This is after a little P.S. -"plastic surgery" aka Photo shop to put a little 'FUZZ' on the subject. LOL) If you have a pic you'd like to share with us...let 'er rip! Or if you're in one of the "What do you look?" like threads how about giving us a link to the actual picture? I'd love to *see* who's sharing their goodies at this table.

~julie~
P.S. I *am* smiling!

Is that really Julie? Heck, I thought you were almost a kid...

Mine is on my DG page, http://davesgarden.com/members/darius/ what I look like now that I don't care about looks...
but I used to be young and beautiful...

Darius! You're GORGEOUS!! You thought *I* was "kid"...I figured you for barely 30. I always do that...I think everyone is 23 (30 tops!), supermodel looks, wealthy, and living in mansions. I LOVE it! We're *just* people, after all!
(Thanks Darius! Now, I feel like I know you.)

Next?

~julie~
P.S. One of my buds on the paperwhites opened while I was having lunch! Can you believe that?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

LOL, Julie, did you look at the "NOW" photo on my DG home page? Must NOT have... I'm 64, past caring how I look now, even to find a partner 15 years younger, LOL. (But at least there's be someone stronger around the house to do heavy stuff if I could snag one!)

Crossville, TN(Zone 7a)

Julie! Paperwhites are gorgeous. We had some open and couldnt figure out what they were- then I saw them blooming at Walmart, hehe. Smells so good!

Look at all the younguns running around DG! *whistles*

I'm off ta hunt for some man slaves to do all the heavy lifting on DG, hehe. I'll get one for every woman here! :-))

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

I most certainly *did* look at the "now" photo...and I *still* feel the same way. You *are* gorgeous! I love your attitude! As for the 15 years...AGE makes NO difference! LOVE *does*!

(So there! :-P :-D)
~julie~

Okay, I've had my knuckles rapped, LOL.

Good!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Jocie, bring me back one that doesn't mind digging up sumac roots that go to china? :)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Pooh, I'd settle for one that would just dig...

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Jocie...I didn't see you sneak in there between me and Darius. :-) Tell ya what, you could bring me back one of those 'man-slaves' so I don't have to bug the DH. LOL (I *know* he'd appreciate it with all the things I've had him doing.)

Hmmm, Sumac roots go to China? I thought they just traveled on the surface to trip me! ;-)

~julie~

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Speaking of the dark side, sometimes I think I keep him around because he is so agreeable to my suggestions about moving plants, building new beds, getting new kittens, and rearranging rocks....on the other hand, I don't complain about how many cars he collects and I don't care much what he wears.so we are the odd couple for sure! Most of that smile is manmade...lol...I spent 60 years not smiling for pictures because my teeth looked like a conga line, so now I just grin like a fool! But it's really what's inside that counts, and there are so many young-at-hearts here I feel right at home. So pass that coffee pot (it is decaf isn't it?) and y'all send some more pictures!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Well, I'd guess we could say we're a good looking bunch of old broads, aren't we? (Crims and D'cat cannot get in this group ID, too young!)

Crossville, TN

Not only is this picture about 10 years old...it was made by "Glamour Shots"...but I wouldn't do all the silly things they wanted me too....still looked better than I ever had in my life.

Now...to see the real me go to my home paage...LOL Jo

Thumbnail by roadrunner
So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Jo, you are just as goodlooking in the "Glamour Shots" photo... just more makeup!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Darius...you got THAT right! A *darned* GOOD looking bunch of "old broads!"

Jo...I think the glamour shot is super...but I *really* like the pic on your home page best.

M5...My smile looks like you could drive a truck through the gap! And we're aren't going to talk about the ones that missing that don't show anyway. LOL

I'm usually behind the camera. Here's one my husband took of me last year dressed in my winter finery, ready to go feed animals. The cat is Newt who gets into a lot of pictures, he is 15 1/2 pounds of friendly cat who follows me around while I do the chores.

Mqary, you look quite young (and cute!)... but you may not quaify for the GOB's Club (Great Old Broad's Club)...

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Coffee still on? It's really cold here tonight! And all of you are beautiful women - inside and out! I need to get a picture of me posted somewhere.....kind of nice to put a face with the person.

Man am I tired. I took today off from my "real" job and took 20 boxes of choral music to the storage place, refiled, moved files, cleaned out....and I'm pooped. Did have two of the good gentlemen in the chorus come help till noon - which was great....but it was hard work. Nice to have it all out of the house though. Now I get to go back to the board and ask for more file cabinets.

Sunshine today was wonderful! It's suppose to be like that tomorrow too - and I'm hoping to get DH out for a hike or something....we both need it - cold weather or not.

Think I'll go look for some muffins or something to nosh upon.
m.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Mary, like Darius said, you ARE a cutie and, yep! *young!* I think you're WAY too sexy in that get up to qualify for the "GOBs" (Darius, I *love* that !) Great pic!

mbock, Are you sure you want to go for walk? After all the work you did today,
it sounds to me like you need to sit a spell, and put your feet up. What's you pleasure? Hot Cocoa? I think there might be some Snickerdoodles left.

~julie~

Memphis, TN(Zone 7b)

Yummy - snickerdoodles sound good! Thanks!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Rats! And more Rats!!! If you have something strong like scotch, I'll take some...

May I share some not-so-good news? I wrote earlier today to Handhelpers because she's quite knowledgeable about hand problems, and has a business providing products to help those who do. I've had tingling in my pinky and now the ring finger on my left hand for a couple of weeks or so now.

Toby says it sounds like cubital tunnel, which is what Horseshoe has, resulting in his recent surgery. No way can I do this. I researched what she said later on the internet later, and she's right on target. Blech.

On the other hand, my first "real bread" in more than a year turned out fair, but not fantastic, but I also only had part of the recipe, just ingredients. I made it in mini-loaves because all my good loaf pans must still be in stroage. Yummy!
