Seed Snatchin' V... Show Us Your Stash!

Oh Honey, you ARE in the right place! You belong with our type.

The box fan concept is simple enough. A friend shared the idea with me and he sent me photos of his creation. Take a fan grate and plop it on the ground. Outline it with a can of spray paint. Now dig down about 12" inside the line. Use the grate to keep checking to make sure you don't take out too much soil and make sure to create a little lip that a grate can rest on. Voila! The squirrels sit on them and stick their grimey paws down into the grates. It's hysterical. You can get a total of 9 pots down there that contain tree acorns that they can't get to and eat!

For me, one slight problem with my new box fan grates... I can't find them and I fear the worst. I am hoping my husband didn't toss them thinking they were mere garbage.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Ohhh Equil I think that bears for BIG trouble... My dh is always throwing stuff away - what'd you need THAT for, it was trash! Grr...

I am with Tamara on the t-shirts! I still want one.. OH, and my DH has a job now so I can actually GET one! ROTFLMAO!!!! :) Hey Oceangirl! Welcome back!!

I am so glad Ladyannne that your granddaughter is going to be OK. Made me tear up that other thread did.... Update us only when you have the time!

Talk to you later!!!

Thanks, nc! Sadly, I have to rush off to work! Have a great day everyone.

Sun's out and there's some planting to do. Best "Make Hay"!
Good time to pray for Ladyanne's GB while that dirt's between fingers.

Ya I still want a T-shirt also, just the way Anne had the flowers in it too!! There are a few different plants that have the same shape leaves as the particular one, so no big deal to me. somehow, someway We really should do a roundup as I have often suggested, just think sitting around laughing so hard we might HAVE to wear diapers, LOL LOL and Dyson, We won't hide the dishes neither, LOL LOL. They'll be plenty of us for cleanup. But I think we'll have paper plates and cups, we'll save the cups for seeds!!!! and the plastic spoon and forks will be used for raking around those little cups, must recycle!!!!!!
Tamara, I like ya already!!!! Our kinda gal for sure, where ya been so long??? And what a cute son you got there! Magpye will ya looka here?
Well all I did today was take care of my many indoor plants, I'm stir crazy, It's been raining, thundering, lightning, I was supposed to go to the UC Berkeley Cactus and Succulent Gardens with Pekaski, she's a member of DG and a volunteer there, we've been trying to get together for last couple of months now, maybe there will be some clippings dropped on the ground, teehee!! Grin grin!!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Glad you think I am in the right place. I was concerned that leaves didn't count, or that the angle of the picture didn't show that the stack was 12 foot wide by 12 foot long.
Anyone who is going to the roundup in Kerrville, make a list of what recyclable items I could bring from the center, and we can distribute. Snatch 'n Share, that's my motto LOL
Love the grate idea. We don't have much squirrels, but I can see that as being handy for many other things. For instance, I will need vents on the top of my winter growing frame (may be summer before i finish building it).
I will try to read part three tonight before I turn in. And I will keep an eye out for part 6, since this is loading sooo slow.
Goodnight fellow resourcefulers!
Tamara

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Goodnight Tamara, sweet dreams of the fans and vents, and You better go potty before you go back and read part 3!!!!!!! Annie

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Well, I pottied and had a bedtime snack, and watched a videotape of desperate housewifes all by myself. So part three will have to wait. And I appreciate the warning Annie, will take precautionary methods lOL
I can't recall who it is that keeps getting cuttings from Kaiser, but I would like a little something from there. I was treated there as a child. It was a long drive from Sacto, but the only place that could see me. And, hey, got ot go to Disneyland too LOL Anyhow, it would be special sniffsniff ;-}

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Well, I finally FOUND Part 3, from the link in part four (DUH!)
And I thought it wouldn't hurt to read a little bit.

MY WORD, I am in the right place, you people are half nutso!!!

I can't wait to find out what the diapers are for. I only got through half of it, and can't believe an hour has lapsed.

I think it was NC, that said her dog would speak on cue. I trained my dog to growl when I say "be nice", and bark when I say something else. It has been so long since i needed to do that, I can't remember the right words LOL.

So sorry about the kitty that died. My cat just kills them and leaves them for me as a gift. It has been so long since we had a mouse in here for her to play with, that she is getting into my children's toys!

Will try to read some more tomorrow. Is there room for two small children on the bus? My mother would not keep them long enough for a road trip LOL My boys would certainly entertain you. The oldest one is going to be an actor when he grows up, and the other his stunt double!

The best thing I got from a dumpster recently was a brand new DVD of the original 40th Anniversary "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" cartoon. A faithful friend did the diving, and gave it to my boys as an early present!!!

The funnest diving is in my own dumpster. We live in a rural area, and a few neighbors/friends that don't have their own dumpster have permission to use ours. One neighbor just puts something under the apricot tree if she thinks I want it. Once she just set it by the dumpster. It was a pack of beer bottles. I though that some guy just stuck them there to hide and would be back for them, so I threw them in the dumpster! Later, Vicki calls to see if I got the bottles. She thought I could use them for something in my garden, I don't even remember what now. ;-P

Of ocurse there are those who use our dumpster without our permission/knowledge. It's just convenient there by the road, and sometimes their's gets too full. Which is why we now have a three yarder. Yep, there are benefits to my mom's job. Benenfits beyond belief. My brother and his wife furnished their small temporary home almost solely from the FRC. And the lady who lives across the street from the FRC furnished a much larger home. I told her when she sells it she should just include everything, then she can start over again!

Once I got some great designer pillow shams form my dumpster. I was so excited because they went so well with my bedding. So I mentioned it to a friend down the street. She never said anything, but was proably thinking "you poor thing". Those were probably her shams. Now anytime she is getting rid of something like bedding or curtains, or something someone gives her that she doesn't want, she just calls me. I guess it saves her a trip to my dumpster LOL. She is the kind of person who doesn't keep anything.

Will catch up with all you snatchers tomorrow (olater TODAY).

Tamara

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

I thought Fritch sounded familiar .... Lake Meredith!!!! Amarillo was the 'Big' city when growing up. I'd deadhead back there with some Santa Fe railroaders and they'd take me fishing with 'em.

If you've read back through the posts you probably realize I think VERY highly of leaf rustling. Tree seeds... Tamara if I was in your neck of the woods I could grow the Mimosa. Gorgeous little tree when in bloom and looks good just in leaf.

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

Great leaf stash, Tamara Faye! I had one (about 20 bags worth, some were grass clippings, some were pine needles, and some were oak leaves.) I was so excited, got my yard all cleaned up, then dumped these bonus pine needles and leaves all over where I want new garden beds!
My neighbors must think I'm crazy, they're picking up leaves and I'm out there, dumping bags out all over my yard!!!LOL Didn't get any pictures though.
It doesn't look like I cleaned up anything!
But there is a method to my madness....(menacing grin.)

Now I have to get out there and clean up all the broken trees and brances from the last big snowstorm. It was wet, heavy snow and there is a lot of damage.

Welcome to DG and to the Cleptobontaniac Dumpster Diving Divas!
My DD has practically furnished her entire home with finds from the dump- and my grown kids have a contest at Christmas and birthdays, they like to see who can get the best gift (for each other, and me) for free. It is always great fun to see what they come up with.

Don't be forgetten 8ft now as he's one of us!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

And Dyson.

Oh my gosh, the man who helps keep this thread alive!

Sorry Dyson... I think of you as just one of the girls. Forgive me for I have sinned.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Maybe we need to get Dyson a moo moo to match 8ft's.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

holy cow Dyson, we're definitely in the midst of a bunch of women. First thing they want to do is play 'dress up'. (at least get something that won't clash with my 60's flavored psychadelic thing )

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Always the slave to fashion, eh, 8ft?

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Will a black leather "biker" jacket clash?

You'll be the talk of the town you two!

Hey Dyson, what about that cute little glass cutting ensemble you were sporting a few months back. The outfit that looked as if you were a horseless knight in chain mail?

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

The battle armor I have to wear each evening at work - the glass does hurt when you get cut - thats why I want you all to be carefull when diveing - very carefull.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Tamara - I wish you lived near me!!! LOL I also have a young son so we could group them all together at the back of the bus! How did you teach your dog to growl on command??? I want details!! That's the coolest! Wonder if mine are too old to learn a new trick? hardy har har... Not until you mentioned having your OWN dumpster did it occur to me... Get a dumpster and let folks 'sneak' their trash in! The possibilities.. my mind is reeling!

Hey Dyson - are you a biker? I hope so! Yea - I won't stick out so much! LOL I tell you what - I couldn't do your line of work - I'm about as clumsy as they get and my arms would be long gone by now.. :)

Too busy to get on here yesterday - boy did I miss it!

Nicole

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey, I have to confess something!

I have Seed Snatchers guilt so I'm blabbing..

I am going to a funeral this weekend for a relative. I had a FLEETING thought run through my head. I bet you can guess what it was... something along the lines of seed/cutting snatching from the arrangements. I can't believe I thought that!! I should be ashamed - and I am.

Nicole

My goodness this is a bad addiction....

Guess it's better than say, Crack though - ...

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

As you walk up to view the departed dear one, turn in anguish before you get there...in front of the floral arrangements. Reach in your purse for a hankie... in the hankie are the nippers... after a good cry, place hankie, nippers, and bounty into your purse. Just keep telling yourself that he/she would have wanted it this way.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I always did need a good cloth hankie.. Might just have to pick one of those up at lunch today...

By the way Weez - I just read the funniest story about leg waxing that made me think of you and your talent for story telling! It's too long to post and is one of those 'chain' emails anyway but boy was it funny! Painted a good picture in my head.

See ya.. Need to work a bit since I have to leave early tomorrow. Gosh, how many more years until retirement? Oh - only 30 or so? ARRRGGHHH!!!

Nicole

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Get a BIG hankie... you deserve a good cry.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

nicole, funerals are fair game in my book! There were a bunch of plants at my grandfathers but somehow they had all been tagged (before the service, even) of who got what! OK, be that way... baggie and fingernails I got cuttings for me and Mom both. She's actually the one who pointed out the mad scramble to lay claim... then suggested I get in there and save something for us before they ran off with the goods. God bless Mom!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Sorta reminds me of that scene in Zorba the Greek when the old gal was expiring in the bed and all the old crones jumped the gun to start rifling through her stuff! LOL! Ah, well, better the funeral parlor than the hospital room, I guess.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

hee hee.. you guys are crazy! I actually have a very nice plant from my Grandfather's funeral that I think of when I take care it. My Grandmother's I took one also but it was one of those dazed looking Hydrangea's and didn't make it two weeks after... :( I will be looking for cuttings though.. I didn't know about them then and know... hmmm will have to report back. Course I never got around to posting the pics from Sugarweeds' mom's house so don't hold your breath for pics! I just can't seem to get upstairs to download them.. Maybe if I got rid of dial up.. lol....

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

This cable modem makes such a difference. As I get older, my short term memory seems to have gone out the window. If I'm waiting for a page to load, I forget what the heck I'm waiting for! LOL!

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Now don't you good people want "something" to remember the dearly-departed & deceased from? Then you could say, "This was provided to me by so-and-so who was "put to rest" the same day. You see, there is always a reason for doing something. Now speaking about dumpster diving. Does anybody know of any good area in Fla to go dumpster diving without getting arrested? Or maybe when we get there, I should look up all the Obits in the paper & attend the funerals with hankie, nippers & baggies. Then when I come home (back to PA), my friends will ask me, "Buttoneer, what exciting things did you do on your vacation?" and I can answer (with tongue-in-cheek), Oh I visited "friends" who shared with me. Hahahahahahahah.

Hey Buttoner, Sugarweed is down your way - maybe she can throw you a few suggestions if she stops by for her seat on the bus.

Weezingreens - there you go again! Another laugh out loud moment! Thanks...

:)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Glad I could give you a good gaffaw... you need one of those keyboard covers or a surgical mask!

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

Don't forget to look around when you get to the cemetary. Many of them have nice plantings, and maybe some flowerpots that would look so much better if they were......um....... deadheaded...

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad! ;)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

While you guys are at the funeral and the cemetary, I'll be over at the house helping set up the hot dishes and walking around the yard with my trowel and clippers.

worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrse! ;)

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

OceanGirl, I'm laughing so hard right now, my son came in to see who was here!!!! Deadheaded, LOL LOL LOL, At least we keep the plant as a rememberance of the deceased! LOL LOL LOL LOL, Annie

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

8 ft, I have some mimosa tree seeds. I just am not sure I want ot plant any, as they put up runners everywhere. I am not one ot mow often, and don't have time for digging. So I will just pretend the Mesquite are as pretty, since they are in the smae family. One day I will change my mind, since when I was growing up, my Granny had a mimosa. One day when I have more time, or a hubby who likes to mow...

oceangirl, I am always saying there is a "method to my madness", but most poeple just think I am either eccentric or lazy or just plain crazy. My garden certainly doesn' tlook cleaned up. I am using the no-till method, and I don't plant in long rows, so my garden just doesn't have that "neat look" to it. Kinda messy, esp since I like to let weeds grow till I know what they are, and then I may still let them grow if they aren't disturbing anything. My friends just say "yeck".

NC, I taught Jake that when I first got him, he was three (he's ten now). If I recall, he would growl if someone walked by the apt door. So I would say "be nice". I just kept saying that until it became the cue word. Then I would say it and he would growl regardless of the stiuation, and of course he would get lots of praise. Then if someone knocked at the door, he would run to bark. So I would point and say "go get em". Then that became his cue, and he would do it regardless. Later when I learned I was pregnant, I taught him a lot more cues, including "watch him", and "where's the baby" and "move'. Since he liked to be underfoot, I thought he sould learn to move out of the way if I was carrying a baby. My friend who was a dog trainer loved it. I could do a sit-stay, then come, then sit then move. She thought it was hilarious,a nd Jake loved all the attention. Basically, if you want o teach your dog a command, just give the cue after he does what you want, if they are willing to learn they will catch on. I am not a dog trainer, but since that is how you train horses, I just applied it and it worked!!! Here is a picture of Jake talking with the boys...such a good dog...

... oh and my favorite is "wait", which includes taking a treat (he could not take it unless I said "OK", that was so no one would poison him) and also when he wants out a front door or car door. I never liked fighting for who gets to go out first.

Why don't you just move to Texas so you can come to the roundup and bring your son LOL Guess the bus trip will have ot suffice for now.

Speaking of dogs I need to let the other one in so she will quit barking!

Good night fellow snatchers and snatcherettes...

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

TamaraFaye, you could get Jake a job on TV! I think it's so funny that his cue to growl is 'be nice!"
Cute kids, and Jake is adorable too.
It's sad that you have to teach him when it's okay to take a snack, but I do understand. When I lived in Louisiana someone poisoned our dog. It was horrible. But I guess that's how some people deal with things.
