I made a mad dash outdoors at about 10pm last night to rescue my 4 potted fuchsia from what was suppose to be a upper 30's night. Checked my digital indoor/outdoor thermometer this morning and the lowest it got last night on my deck was 46*.
I still need to dig some dahlias and glads.....waiting for a frost to do in the last of the dahlias though as some are still blooming. Just too lazy to do the glads and figure I'll do them all at once. Ears are all in and some of the dahlias.
I *REALLY* need to get going on my coleus cuttings and get them into pots. They're still enjoying a soak in water with their huge roots!
Brenda aka langbr need a new best friend part 2
got everything in and am wrapped in blanket freezzing it not real cold but wind and rain still today .House is over 100 years old .they but my central heat vent in ceiling big mistake i have 9 ft. ceiling .Stand up its warm set down you are cold .
I lost my coleus when I brought it in... don't know what i did wrong, but a white colored fungus started showing up on the dirt... so i figured i should throw the whole thing away... sigh... my fuchsia started dropping all it's leaves when i brought it in. I been trying to find some articles on it, but nothing so far that covers leaves falling off... i have had a sort or tough transition with all my houseplants that have been moved back indoors...
Brenda, I don't think you ever slow down lol... you are always mach 10 with your hair on fire... slow down, girl, take a break... lol...
Hi Tazzy! You have a busy time ahead of you, too. You are taking Twyla on Friday, right? No wonder you like to ride the ceiling fan... it is warm up there!!! lol
NO! ck. prayer request forum bad news right now . prayers needed
Hi Starr! I missed all you guys too! (I just have such a hard time FINDING everyone. LOL)
FWIW...Several of my plants that were brought inside reacted the same way as yours...some lost most or all of their leaves and several, especially the caladiums, got that dreaded fungus. I attributed the leaf loss to the fact that I had waited too long to bring the plants (coleus & a few others) inside. As for the fungus...I think it was mainly my fault with leaving the caladium in a very *heavy* soil in the containers. OH and I've had a little bit of a turn around when I put them in a location where they get more light.
Mind you, I'm just starting out with this whole process but I'm a quick study when it comes to observation. :-D I might also add that I'm *CHEAP* :-D and hate spending money on plants that I'm going to kill. hehehehe
I managed to save a LOT of cuttings from the coleus even after they lost their leaves. I just stuck the cuttings in a glass of water (LOTS of glasses!) and they're rooting...slowly but surely. I *did* have a significant number turn to mush on me...but with the success level of the others, it's "ok". :-)
With the number of plants I have growing right now...and the seeds I'm planning to experiment with (Winter sowing) I'm sure hoping to have a mess of 'goodies' that I'll be able share with my friends. *THEN* I'll feel like a 'contributing' member. LOL
Tazzy...please don't freeze your arse off! ;-)
~julie~
its pretty cold but still there .taking blood thinners make you feel the cold more .pluse as a kid i was always cold in just a rose in the snow LOL >cold rain
:-) (Stay warm, Tazzy!)
~julie~
The wind has died down and no rain for last 4 hours maybe see sun tomorrow? House isn't so cold with no wind, I hope it drys out so we can finish greenhouse
Julie, sounds like fun!
Tazzy, Hope your weather dries up a bit... We have been inundated with cold rain the last few days... All my little plants are drowning... need to teach them how to swim... lol...the weather report says we due for a little warmer weather and sunshine!!!! yay! sent ya mail.... just a bit ago...
Today is the first day in several that we are not having rain. And, it is a beautiful sunny day, although a little chilly! Supposed to be nice through the weekend so I'm hoping I can get all my bulbs planted. I'm actually glad I haven't planted them before now because they would probably have rotted!
Rotted???? Oh Geez, I planted all my new bulbs just before the rains came... should I dig them up and see if they are ok? They are in a place that has drainage, but with so much rain, no time to drain yet... I don't have that many and do not want to lose a single one...
Gosh, Star. I don't know. Guess you could check and see if they have gone soft. If they have, nothing you can do about it. Maybe you should post a question in a new thread and see if someone who is a bulb expert will give us some advice.
Thanks, will do!
ok langbr, i got a new best friend for ya... murray bird.... he is an african grey parrot... he's 8 years old... now let me give u the scoop on murray... he would be a great new best friend... u can take him in the garden with u... sit him in a tree or on his birdie playpen, when u walk past him or plant a new flower he will show intrest by saying (WHOOOoooOOOh!) if the dogs start barking, he will yell at them for u , for instance, to my dogs he will yell "BEAR!!!!!! SHUT-UP!, GO LAY DOWN!" now let me warn u , murray is a little rough around the edges.. he is a little bossy too.. like when he wants more food in his dish, and as u are pulling the dish out of his cage he will rush u by saying "come on, come on!!!" but dont let that discourage u... he will yell at himself also after he has given u a little bit of a 'harsh' love bite , by saying...'OUUUUCHHHHHH!!!!! MURRAY, DONT BITE!!!!!'... now he does give u wolf whistles when u walk by weather ur covered in garden dirt or looking ur best... he will also talk on the phone while u talk on the phone... he will also laugh when u laugh.. he tells u when he wants to go to bed...but he also loves to kiss u, and share ur food, and he will sit on ur lap and let u rub his head till he falls asleep and falls over with both feet sticking straight up .... now i know it appears u do more for him then he does for u... but really he is worth it... he will even say 'uh-huh.....uh-huh...ohhhhh,...hahahahaha.' when u talk to him... although he does have some really nastey habits... like he does burp and make a farting sound when u walk by sometimes...and he does have a swearing problem... he does curse alot.. (darn those tv shows! (: .... but maybe u could train him to yell at vermin in ur yard... sometimes he yells at the cats to "go on.. GIT!!!!!! GIIIITTTTT!!!!" plus he does have bird poo.. will that work for the garden???? oh and he does have a nervous habit (from living in the trailer) he does pull out his feathers on occasion on his chest.... anyway here is a pic of murray bird... let me know if u want him to be ur best friend also... k...(:
I would sure go for wolf whistles when I'm all dirty!
Cici -- Murray sounds a lot like my 2 yr old daughter Leah!! rofl
that my kind of bird .speaks his mind.

and langbr, never ever say "murray wants a cracker?"... ur mouth will drop to the ground!!!!!! lol... the foul mouth feather brain... the things this bird has learned,.. tsk, tsk tsk!!!! u know when hubby and i would get into and argument, he is very quiet....until hubby walks out the door.. then murray lets him have it.. calling him all sorts of names... and langbr , ohhh u have a 2 yr old little girl?! ohhh i want a baby soooo bad...): hopefully when the house is done , we wont have so much stress... and then just maybe.....
lol.. ok, he can be ur best friend too.. hey maybe he can fly to ur place.. oh wait he cant, i forgot , hes crippled .. when he was born he was born with some type of something that made him a little deformed... his back hip is higher then the other.... which makes his wings all crooked... and also when he was born he had to wear a neck brace for a few weeks.. poor murray bird.. no wonder he is so difficult.. .. i have a black lab, although i wish she would CALM down.. that dog gets sooo excited...
tazzy, meeeee toooo.... hubby used to really hate murray, which i couldnt blame him, the bird did lunge after him every time he would pass his cage, trying to bite him... hubby couldnt put his hand in his cage if it were to save his own life.. see murray is very jealous... he hated when i showed anyone or anything any attention... he would get so mad that he would bite me... well hubby one day brought home another bird that a customer gave him and murray freaked out over the attention hubby was giving this new bird (even though murray hated my hubby) and all of a sudden he let hubby rub his head.. and now he can pick him up and rub him and play with him like i do... although we no longer have that other bird... that other bird would scream sooooo loud that it drove me nuts.... and i can put up with alot of noise from a bird... trust me.. so when we moved out here , the birdie went bye bye... (:
Cici, how old is your lab? Mine is 3 and still bouncing off the walls! When we got her they said by the age of 2 she would be real mellow. Then I met someone who had a lab and they said 4. Then I met someone else with one and they said by the time their's was 8 it finally calmed down. I think mine will finally calm down when she is dead!! LOL!
ohhhh mgh!!!! ur kidding me!!!! ugh!!!! sassy princess girlie is only a year and a half!!!! , i think the people we bought her off of fixed her , because for one she has a scar on her belly right about where it would be when u fix a dog, she is a weinmaster (sp?) hunting dog... and she has acted like she has gone into heat twice and the two male german sheps i have ,got to her , and still (thank god ) nothing.. i wanted to fix her last year.. but her being hubbys dog, he wouldnt have it.. he wanted to have the option of breeding her.. the two males GS , well one is too old to fix, he used to be a stud, hes 12 now... and the other one, bear, well he was gonna be my breeder dog after the house was built.. not sure if he still is gonna be, but he sure is a good lookin dog.. and so is sassy girl.. until this house is done i dont think either of us know what we are doing...
Cici, maybe since yours is a hunting dog she'll have more to do and calm down sooner. Mine is a house dog and gets pretty bored quite a bit of the time. I admit we don't have a big enough place for her to run and we probably should have gotten a smaller dog, but now she's part of the family....she's just the part that we try to pretend isn't there when company comes over....you know like the cousin who is in jail kinda thing! LOL!! No not really, since I have been blessed with two little boys, she is the little girl I always wanted!
mgh... just because i said she is a weignmaster (sp?) hunting dog , does not mean she actually hunts... her line is top hunting dogs, but here she is just a fat rolly pooly wiggle butt...lol.. hubby has not had time to train her or go hunting for that matter.. and she is like a bull in a china shop, so she is an outsider till she calms herself ... now bear my german shep, he is just a bratt.. he will lay calmly in the house , but u have to watch ur stuff cuz he will steal it and take off with it outside.. like for instance my garden gloves... or my can of beer... so u gotta whatch him..
Yeah, sounds like you better watch him cici! LOL!
Labs calm down around the age of 10 in my experience and I've had 2. Have 1 left... Shadow and she's 11 now and finally mellow although that could be because her cohort and leader, Sunshine (yellow lab) passed away early this year.
p.s. Shadow is a lab-chow mix and very large for a lab (125 lbs) -- she got the Chow size and the temperament of a Lab.
Shadow is a real doll baby! I lost my lab, Baxter, last year. He was 14, close to 15 and had hip dysplacia (sp). He calmed down around the age of 7.
awwwwwe shadow is so beautiful!!!! langbr!!!! 10!!!!! i have to wait till this dog is 10???? oh loard i will never make it!!!!!!lol...
If I tell DH 10 he will either leave or the dog will have to go! LOL! Better keep that one to myself!
Shadow has hip dysplasia also, Starr. Some days it's worse than others. She sleeps on the floor next to our bed and she has a climb up the stairs that some evenings takes her a good 3-5 minutes to climb.
Mendy & Cici - my labs were true wanderers in the lab tradition. Noses to the ground they'd follow a smell wherever it led them. Sunshine & Shadow were infamous runaways.
In the old days, we'd get home from work and see the dogs were gone from the backyard. We'd head to the answering machine and sure enough there would be anywhere from 2 to 10 messages of people calling to say they saw our dogs. Usually these were accented by a 2-minute oration of how wonderful and friendly they are and what beautiful dogs there are. We could basically map the phone calls (everyone gave addresses & tel #'s) and see the wanderlust path those 2 took all over our side of town. Sometimes it was a riot to listen to the calls. The animal control people started picking them up and by the third time we had to bail them out it was costing us $250 to get them released. (Our town increases the fines each time the same dog is picked up)
The last straw was when some sweet old lady called to say she saw them that day and the animal control people were picking them up and the animal control person told her (the lady), "That these dogs need to be put down because they are always roaming." That lady's message was so indignant and she said, "You just CAN'T let them put those two loveable, friendly dogs down!". Needless to say at $250 bail and the info that animal control was threatening to put them to sleep, we found a way to contain them inside the house. Sure changed them a lot then because they LOVED being outdoors.
Maybe mine were atypical because there were two of them feeding each other's mischievious side. But seriously, 10 was about where they both startled to settle down. As for their tearing things up and chewing on things, that was over around 3 or 4 for both.
Here's my beloved Sunshine.
She's gorgeous Brenda! Thanks for sharing their story. My dog only roams the neighborhood when she manages to escape the house (usually one of the kids standing there with the front door hanging open). We then go after her right away. She stopped chewing things up about a year ago. We used to kennel her in the house while we were gone. We slowly started letting her roam the house if we were only going to be gone for a little while. The last time she chewed up a toy was our fault. It had been used to decorate my DS's bday cake and still had the smell of frosting on it. Who can blame her for wanting to eat that?! LOL! She used to be a terrible digger, but she stopped doing that when I started spraying her paws with the hose after she had dug. She hates to get her feet wet, unless of course we are at the beach. She is very smart, but only when she wants to be! I know if I took the time, she would be a very well mannered dog.
Brenda, thanks for sharing their stories.. My aches for you as I know how badly yours aches as you watch Shadow trying to get around. It will not get easier. I finally had to put Baxter to sleep as he was having heart problems as well. You see Baxter was a special guy. He had two lives. His first 6 years were spent with my brother, John. When John died in a motorcyle accident I brought Baxter home to live with me. I figured it was the last thing I could do my brother.... take care of his dog... so Baxter joined me and Dolly. The three of us were best friends til last year. I had to put both of them to sleep a few months apart. They were both 14 years old. They were cremated and will buried with me.... Here is Baxter...
Awwww Starr! Every time I see a yellow lab I get teary-eyed. They all so look like Sunshine. Beautiful dog and I know the heart aches you feel as well. I also lost a Yorkie I had for 13 years. She became very ill very suddenly and stopped eating. Vet did all kinds of tests and xrays and finally found cancer all throughout her lungs/chest area. She was gone within 10 days of becoming ill. She was my litttle lap baby before I had kids and afterwards as the kids grew up. It's so hard to lose such a well-connected companion that knows all of our emotions.
Brenda, Yes, indeed! I have not had another one since they left me. I have two dogs that my daughter left with me. They prefer to live outside. One is a border collie mix (Mandy) and the other is a lab and pyrenes mix (Buster). They are both black and we call them 'the pillagers' cause they 'pillage' my garden beds... lol.. dh has a dog named Emma. She is very clear about who she belongs to and it is him!!! I am very attached to her and she is a special girl, (great dane), but I am still waiting for another Dolly or Baxter. Maybe someday...
I remember seeing pics you posted of "the Pillagers".
Starr do you have a photo of Emma that you could post? I loved the photo you previously posted of Mandy and Buster....real cuties!
Mendy, What is your dog's name? I don't remember seeing it.
Brenda, Shadow and Sunshine... such neat names... (I had a horse named Shadow)...
Her name is Maggie.
Emma looks like a sweetie! Thanks for posting that pic. Being a great dane, is she on the small side? I would love to have a great dane, but I know it is out of the question. We had a grey hound once for about 2 weeks. She was so tall she could walk up to the kitchen counter and rest her chin on it! We had to give her up cuz it just wasn't working. She was a racer the first 5 years of her life. She was scared to death of the kids and cowered in the corner all day. She almost pulled me down the road one day when I had her outside on the leash. She caught site of something and tried to make a run for it....nearly took my arm off! Since we had gotten a dog mainly for the kids we knew it just wasn't the right fit. Broke my heart to give her back to the grey hound rescue people.
