Private messaging...

What a great new feature! Thanks Dave.

I love it...Jo

Golden, CO(Zone 5b)

I like the concept, but the execution is difficult.

1. I have to open multiple DG windows to copy a trade from the private email, to the trade tracker. Makes my laptop cranky.

2. I find it confusing because some of the emails are replies, and some arent. It is difficult to follow an email conversation.

Probably just me. I'm easily confused.

Dave -

I noticed that if I attach an image file that it puts a HUGE copyright notice on it and not the Method #1 that I have selected in my Copyright Preferences. Did I do something wrong?

Also, I know at one time you and Gardenwife were discussing the fact that we can attach PDFs, GIF, etc. Is that still true and if so can we have that same capability in the Private Email? I tried to attach a PDF but it didn't work.

Thanks!

I'm going to try to get along with the new feature like all of the rest, but I do think that after a period of time, say 48 hrs, we should be able to get a notice in our home inbox. Especially at certain times of the year life takes us on many detours, and alot of us just may not log on for periods of time. If someone is urgently trying to reach us, and doesn't already have our personal email, we may not know it for days. I love DG, and can't always log on daily. Or maybe an option whether we want a notification. legit

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

ACKKKKKKK!!! I thot I was sending a REAL email to a person inquiring about some SASE seed! It's in the WRONG place! It's here...how do I know whether or not the person actually *saw* my message that was supposed to have gone to an email inbox?? And HOW did I make the mistake of not sending the *real* email?

I like the idea of the Private Message here on the DG...but I need BIG RED letters to keep me from punching the wrong link. :-( :-D

I think this is a wonderful feature - now I don't have to log into 2 programs to keep up-to-the-minute with dialogues! Everything is neat and organized and I can just spend ALL DAY on DG. (can't imagine what I did with my time before DG...)

Good job!

Dave;

I recently impulsively emailed a DG user based solely on the fact that she was interested in Hummingbirds and lived near me. I was looking for someone with whom I could compare notes. When I didn't get a reply, I checked and found out that she was a non member and hadn't been active on the site in over a year. This was my first email under the new system.

Questions:
1. Will it be forwarded to her own email inbox eventually?
2. Whether she answers or not will it forever remain as something that I will have to look at every time I check my DG mail?

Thanks

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

I just received an email from DG in my regular email inbox..I thought this was out..Not that I mind, I just delete if not interested.. I was just wondering why I got it..I understood that it would be on my home page as a thread..Now I am confused, lol..

Me too Larkie! Same thing to me today - no big deal though..

I have to log off and sign back in to have an "email" notice appear on my home page. Do I need to change a setting?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

You shouldn't have to do that - just click on the "home" link to refresh your page. If you find that isn't working, it may be a problem with your browser "caching" a page. You can always hold down your Ctrl key and use your mouse to click on the "refresh" button (usually arrows circling one another) in your browser's buttons.

Terry;
I addressed my two questions to Dave but I should have included you. Sorry.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

After being offline for 4 days thanks to Ivan, I got back on tonight...and have received 2 messages from DG'ers on my home page. What a delight, and easier than having to switch to my email program to see them!

Thanks, Dave!

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

I want the ability (or choice) to receive my emails in my own personal email box. I don't like having someone else decide how I'm going to run my life, in this case how I'm going to take care of my emails. Please give us the choice. Thank you.

P.S. I also would appreciate it that when you change a feature as major as this that you contact all DGers and let them know what's going on.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I think this new feature is wonderful. A nice thing is that, if you receive an personal message from a fellow Dave's Garden member and if you want to communicate with them by regular email instead, you can feel free to share your personal email address with them. For those who want to email directly with someone, the personal message is but a first initial contact; for those who don't wish to reveal their email address, this is a great way to communicate without doing so. Great job, Dave!

Both JoanJ and Ulrich sent me messages just now and they came through......but the earlier ones I received from ncgardenaddict and weeds are still unreadable!?! :S

Still not clear to me how to delete old worn-out 'Private e-mail' threads before the list is a mile long.
Did I miss something? (:~(

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Maybe once the wrinkles are ironed out, we should send out an email message to all members explaining the switch to personal messaging and advising them to periodically check in at DG to make sure they don't have any messages waiting. (Maybe the email simply refers them to their homepage where a personal message with more details is waiting for them, so they can see how it works, rather than waiting for someone to contact them.)

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Another thought I had: I don't want the world knowing my personal email address or my snailmail address. However, if I understand your system correctly, other people could know what they are is if I reveal them in this email system. And I would have to reveal my snailmail address in order to do ANY trading. Correct? Incorrect? If incorrect, why?

The reason I'm questioning this aspect is that all of my posts show up when I do a google search on my name. What prevents my emails from showing up too?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Marilyn, your posts show up in Google but not your old emails you sent through our system, nor will your private messages. Dave can explain the technical details if need be, but as I understand it your private messages are just that - private. No one else on the site can see them (other than the person you're corresponding with) and no one outside DG can see them either. The only real difference between private messaging and email (from the user's perspective) is that all the correspondence resides at Dave's Garden, rather than going through your email system. Same level of privacy you had with the former email system (and perhaps more, since now your email addess is not shown when you correspond with another member.)

You will have to send your snail-mail address to anyone you're trading with, whether you do that via private messaging or through good ole email.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Terry, when you go to a member's trade list home page and "click here to send Smiln32 an email" - it really does send the email message. It doesn't show up on the member's homepage (where the personal messages appear that are sent within DG.) It sends the email outside of the DG system.

Northern, IN

I just googled my DG name and was able to read my private mail thru that google link. Is that only because DG recognized me as a member? Or can outsiders do it?
Thanks.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Thanks Carla...now I'm *really* corn-fused. 8-O) :-)

dwdruley, all I see when googling your name is either your DG home page, or your public journal.

Have I Lost All My 'Past E-Mails'...In Place of This?
I Have Nothing But a Single(1) Private E-Mail I Sent This AM.
I am Looking for Several Past E-Mails I Sent Through This Forum.
How Do I Retrieve Them?
"Thanks"...In Advance.

Darius;
Didn't my "Home Page" give you the option to read my private mail? In other words didn't it give all the options I have when I log onto it? It happened that way when I did it.

Northern, IN

Darius;
I just found you on about page 10 of Google and (your right) it's not the "same" home page. An outsider can still get to know alot about you but apparently can't read your private mail.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

dwdruley:

I also checked my Home Page, your Home Page and another person's Home Page with whom I'm currently corresponding. My Home Page shows my private email because I'm the one looking, but yours and the other person's Home Pages don't show me any private email option. So I guess this works. I think I'm feeling better about the privacy issues.

But I still want the option to "opt out" of the DG email. I like making my own decisions rather than letting someone else make them for me.

Northern, IN

Daruis;
I'm still learning. I tried again this time to read your Journal but at that point DG welcomed me as dwdruley and I could only get my own. That's reassuring. I can see no privacy problems after learning this.

Carla: thanks for the report. I fixed the tradelist to use the new mail system, rather than the old one.

Everyone else: remember that you see priviliged stuff only when you are logged in as yourself. Nobody else can view your own information, including (and especially) your email and such-like. You are seeing it, because you are logged in as yourself!

If in doubt, logout and then see what you can see.

Can all administrators real everyone's email messages?

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Dave - any thoughts/comments on my post on 9/19 3:27am? Thx!

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I too would like to know how to retrieve the emails I sent befor this new system.

Your old mail is now accessible!

Go to your member page and then click on "View your member-to-member mail."

Then click on "Click here to view the old mails."

dave

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Kooger, administraters can read your email. Not just here but on any email account you have. Yahoo, Gmail, or the one from your ISP. Email privacy is a fallacy that many of us choose to believe.

That said, what would be the purpose of their reading it? It would be extremely time consuming and boring in most instances! In a case of He said/She said disputes it might become of more interest to the administrators here but I don't know if they would ever resort to that.

Zanymuse has it correct - nothing on the internet that is not encrypted is safe. As for me: I encrypt everything that is important with an (almost) unbreakable encryption called PGP. If it's not encrypted, just about anyone can read it.
