Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

8out of 10 for me

Dublin, OH(Zone 5a)

I got 8 out of 10. But I guessed 7 thru 10. Mmm... a botany class for me in the future, perhaps.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Hmmmm. Maybe we could do some botany-based multiple choice "quiz" questions in the weekly voting booth ??? Do y'all think people like it or not?

(We've always tried to keep the voting booth pretty lighthearted - a conversation starter kind of along the lines of tossing out a question to break the conversational "ice".)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

WOOHOO 9 out of 10. Im smarter than I thunk I wuz.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

well at least we passed.........:-)
i think that is a fun idea terry i know i learn AT LEAST one thing a day here, usually more. it would be a nice challenge for you too. a different change of pace is always a good thing. i vote yes..........

debi z and my little bulbette franklin votes yes too.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I flunked! 6 out of 10 for me.

Terry, botany type questions in the polling booth would be great! Love the idea.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I agree

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

I got 8.

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

10 outta 10.
I'm a plant nerd.... I'll admit it.
(now give me a test on how to bake a cake or "washing machines... how they really work" and we'll even it out)

drew

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

7 here.....I need to take that course.

I would love to see questions on the voting booth, learning is great fun!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I got 9/10. I should have went with the common people answer instead the answer I know is right on one! LOL

Clearfield, PA(Zone 5a)

I got 5 out of 10 but I can bake a cake. lol

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

I only got 6 out of 10, but then I'm senile!!!!!!!!!!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL LOL i love the "reasons" for not getting all 10 answers right. LOL

you go drew.....A+

i have a question about the a question in the quiz.

9. A leaf blade that partially surrounds the stem is said to be:
Sessile
Channeled
Sheathing
Enclosing
can someone give an example of these types of leaves to me?
thanx,
debi z and my little bulbette franklin ('woof woof woofers. how about my question too?' woof you.)

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 5a)

I got 9 out of the 10. I missed the bulb question. Rats.

Debi_z,
I think of a blade of grass when I think of "sheathing". Whether that's correct or not, I don't know, but the base of the leaf blade does surround the stem.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I got blasted on the Geranium one. Technically a geranium is a perennial. BUT, you have all those nurseries calling pelargoniums 'seed geraniums'. How do you win on that one? LOL I would say grasses are sheathing.

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

even more confusing are certain plants with leaves that start off sheathing and than become regular leaves... Mitragyna is a fine example.

Walkerton, VA(Zone 7a)

Debi, We was robbed! I missed the same question because the only term I was familiar with was sessile - a leaf with no petiole. I have 3 Peterson field guides to wildflowers. Two of them call leaves partially surrounding the stem "earlike"; the third calls them "clasping". I'd have gotten a perfect score if they hadn't stuck in a trick question. Wanna protest?

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

8 out of 10. I missed the first one (chose growth cycle) and the bulb one. Whoops!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

sorry raisedbedbob, i actually got it right. lol
you win badseed by being ignorant like the rest of us. LOL i think we reeeeeeeeealy need the change on the home page. :-) i've noticed that the way it is now doesn't stimulate conversation. i read it and put in what i do in respect to the question. it would be nice to have folks chatting about the answers and helping each other out.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Okay, then. For all you who agree having some botany questions would be a good thing, can you help me come up with some good stumpers? (I need questions AND possible answers in a multiple-choice format.) To keep things more interesting, do NOT post them here but email them to me, please.

These can be related to botanical names (family, genus or species names), garden tools, pure botany questions (leaf, stem, flower arrangements, etc.), even plant pests, diseases, garden critters, etc. We'll try a few over the next few weeks, and if they seem to be popular we'll keep introducing new ones each week for a while ;o)

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

8 but, I protest #1

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I took the test but wouldn't DARE post my results, LOL!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

C'mon, darius!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Nah, no way, LOL!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

:-(

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Listen, imway2dumb, I'm way too old to have to embarrass myself, LOL.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

:-)

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

6 outta 10 - that's a D- but still passing!!!!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Yeah but, you should take the short course! If you wanna go to grad school. :-D

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

either way, 10 questions is not enough for a good test.
100 or 150 questions would make it a more useful examination.

Terry, if you own the book 'botany for gardeners' that would be a great source for your questions.

Coming up with questions isn't hard; the difficulty lies in coming up with 3 (minimum) to 8 or 10 possible answers that will keep it fun AND challenging ;o)

For giggles and grins, here's a sample:

Kansuensis means...

a) Of or from the state of Kansas, U.S.
b) Of or from Gansu, China.
c) Named for Kansua (an ancient Shiva temple.)
d) Commemorating Nicolas Kansuen, an 18th century botanist and explorer.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

c?

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

D?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

keep guessing...(Hint: you *can* look it up in Botanary ;o)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

well if i can cheat.....i'll say c
:-D
terry did you need more answers for the questions i sent to you?

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Yeah but, I DIDN'T CHEAT! :-D

ed. to say, I got it! I got it! Or, did I?

chuckle.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I'm gonna say B, because nobody's guessed that one yet and Terry is still holding her tongue.
