All fragrances had more scent oils than our perfumes of today.
;)
Perfume?
What a fun thread! It's brought back many memories and got me thinking all the prefumes I've worn.
It all began with Evening in Paris, then through the years.....Chantilly, Emeraude, Wind Song, Tabu, Navy, White Shoulders, White Linen, Fendi, Anais Anais, Red, Beautiful, Mackie, Charlie, Vanderbilt, Paloma Picasso, Oscar, Jovan Musk, Lady Stetson, Claiborne, Lutece, Nicole, Perry Ellis, Xia Xiang, Ysatis & Gucci No. 3.
Gucci No. 3 is my absolute favorite and, of course, they don't make it any more!!
These days I wear Lucky Number 6.
Nothing like a scent to transport you somewhere is there!
the top of a baby's head ...is right up there- although you can't bottle it!
First few drops of rain after the heat......a fragrant waft as a man or woman walks by smelling so delicious....you want to follow....the smell of the first frangipani and the fragrance of the last rose of Summer that makes you want to take big gulps of it to last until the next season ....so many wonderful perfumes.....ahhhh :)
My absolute favorite is Opium by Yves St. Laurent...........I have the cream stuff, just a teeny dab on the wrists and behind the ear and I feel great! Heaven Scent..........yuck, yuck, double yuck.........somebody gave my sister or my mom that when I was a kid and it was totally nauseous. Never could "get on" to Chanel #5 either. I guess I just have wierd body chemistry, as it seems like the Opium is the only thing that smells good TO me On me. I have a good friend that bathes in scents. I asked her one time "are you wearing lavendar?" (it makes me nauseous too). She said yes, I said please do not put so much on next time. LOL
I had forgotten all about Emeraude. Here's a funny story...
I used to wear Emeraude all the time, from my teens into my 20's. Then one day during a Bible study we read a passage that talked about God smoting the Hebrews with "emerods." Spelled different, but pronounced the same. Someone asked what an emerod was...it was explained that they are (get ready) hemorrhoids. OMgosh! I went straight home from that Bible study and threw out all of my Emeraude. I just KNEW at church the next Sunday someone would compliment me on my perfume and ask what it was.
We had a lot of good laughs over this one, DH came up with some great alternative names for my former perfume...but I won't share them! Oh, memories.
heathrjoy ~ That is great!! A couple days ago, while shopping, someone walked by me and I'm absolutely positive they had on Emeraude, and I immediately thought of this thread. I hadn't smelled that in a long time.
I have just tossed the empty container of Yves St.Laurent's OPIUM. It was the body cream and when I could not get to it I used a Q-tip for the last few days. It is one of those that I did not like at first but after 4 or more hrs I noticed how much I really liked it. It is "spicy" to my nose. I occasionally get a sample container from a friend who sells fragrances @ Nordstroms. This was one of them; otherwise I would have never thought I would like it. Any of you recommend a web site to get fragrances at discount?
Today, after expressing my admiration for Kai for so long,
my bestest ever sister in law gave me a bottle!
KAI reminds me of a lilac tree in upstate New York. Our next
door neighbor had a giant Lilac. I can remember smelling that
lilac and thinking of it many times over the years while growing
up.
It almost smells like that same lilac tree, only bottled!
I like Cinnabar by Estee Lauder, but years ago I used to wear Jontue. I don't wear perfume now though because I think I've developed an allergy. I sneeze when I'm around anyone with perfume now :(
KAI? by? I will check that out. Why is there not a fragrance of daphne? I could roll in the stuff.
How about this "new" one by Revlon, it's called "Flair". Has anyone checked that out yet? Rite Aid has a $5 rebate on it right now! tee hee hee
chrissy100 -- I do a lot of work with essential oils and often use some (highly diluted) as a fragrance or a bath additive. I mix a bit of perfumer's alcohol in with the carrier oil, which for me is usually grapeseed oil or sometimes jojoba oil. The perfumer's alcohol has no scent and it helps the EOs disperse more evenly. Sandalwood with a bit of Orange is just delicious.

Things my mother never taught me. Thank you. I will be researching essential oils. Now june_nmexico, I am very special. you must be more detailed and little baby steps for me.
That's right I love to experiment with the essential oils...I was just telling someone on another forum that I came home from an Egyption Exhibition ...with a vial of a copied Egyptian recipe....(from the tombs).....guess what it was? cinnamon .....I made some up with the carrier oil and cinnamon essential oil and...it was the same.
Anastatia - you have D-mail.

Where does one purchase perfumer's alcohol and what oils are used as carrier oils? That sounds like a great job you have June. I love New Mexico and it's Spiritual beauty. I lived in Cedar Crest in the seventies.

Sugarweed -- I was able to find perfumer's alcohol in strange little old drugstore here in Albuquerque. I only use a tiny amount at a time so it's lasted for years and I still have half a bottle. It's basically a grain alcohol, not always sold in the US. Sometimes it's available as Everclear but I think that's too dangerous to use since it's fatal if consumed. You can also just use vodka, the highest proof you can get. A pint will last you forever. It's purpose in a blend is to help the EOs disperse into the carrier oil. I see one site that lists Perfumers Alcohol and gives more information about safety:

I use organic grapeseed oil as my main carrier, sometimes with a few drops of Jojoba or fractionated coconut oil. Grapeseed oil is inexpensive, light textured and doesn't go rancid if you keep it refrigerated.
New Mexico has changed drastically since the 70s. Much of the natural beauty is being eroded with overbuilding, and traffic is getting worse all the time. We left California six years ago to get away from all that, but it followed us. ;-).

Thanks June.
We used to put "Full" signs at the New Mexico/Texas Border. It was already happening.
;)
"Full"
That is too cute! Love it!
anastatia, let me know where you will get your essential oil, i ould like to get some daphne too. you think nature's?? (now called wild oats?)
What a wonderful subject. Just the other day I passed a woman wearing "Red" and it brought back a wonderful rush of memories of my mother. I stopped and closed my eyes and let the smell and memories envelope me.
My favorites are "Skin" a musk by Bonnie Bell and also "Pure Grace" by Philosophy. I get comments and questions every time I wear them. The "Pure Grace" is such a clean, soap and water, type of smell. I even dab it on just before bed time sometimes just to smell it all night long.
The smell of Brut on men reminds me of my father. He always dabbed it on just before leaving the house for bowling every Saturday night and mom would spray on the "White Rain" hairspray. Us kids were always treated to burgers from McDonalds on bowling night. Great memories...... Brut, White Rain and McDonalds..... there's a combination!
Gay ♥
Gay ~ Isn't it fun when those scents evoke memories.....especially wonderful ones! I'm going to check out "Pure Grace" as, from your description, that is exactly the scent I'm wanting these days. I sampled "Amazing Grace", but I thought it was a bit strong for what I'm looking for. Thank you!

I have sure enjoyed reading this forum--has brought back many memories. I used to wear a fragrance called Ebullience and loved it. Then it was discontinued for about 5 years and now a new person has bought the formula and has started making it again. It's not quite the same smell and doesn't stay with me very long. Boo hooo, was so excited when I ordered the new one------I want my old formula back. SheVerne
Of the things still being made, I like "Opium".
Was beginning to think I was the only Opium addict here. LOL
Bump. Fun thread.
Anastatia, somewhere I remember posting my love as a young lady of "Lily of the Valley" ..can smell it now!
I haven't read all of this but I want to say--
Just because your mother likes a perfume, doesn't mean you should get the same one for your wife.
Not a perfume, but I loved the original Herbal Essences shampoo. They have others now but not the original.
