Perfume?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I like best the idea of using an atomizer, spraying a light mist in front of me, and then walking into it.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I like to do that too Darius, in fact, that is how I taught my daughter and son to apply their scents. When my son first started wearing a scent, he smelled like he was bathing in it.... then again, maybe he was! LOL

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for bringing this thread back up! So many fragrances I remember. Every Christmas as a kid DS and I would get either the Jean Nate or Love's Baby Soft gift pack. Mom always said we couldn't put too much of those scents on, so they were "safe."

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh my gosh, how could I have forgotten Love's Baby Soft???

Himrod, NY(Zone 6a)

How about Love's Rain Scent. Has not been available for a long time but was one of my favorite 'lite' scents.

All time fav for me has been Chanel #5, db got me started in high school. Now dh keeps me supplied. Only use it during winter months or very special occasions. Most days it is something "green" can't get past that!

Thanks for reviving this thread, had it in my watched but had never posted. I don't feel dressed unless I have perfume on and must wear it light enough that no one has ever complained. Have said that I smell good though. ;')

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Anyone remember Exclamation? Do they still sell that stuff? LOL! Now, a dab of that'll do ya! That always smelled so horrible on me, but a dear friend wore it and it was so lovely on her...she made it smell expensive, LOL.

A cheapy drugstore perfume I miss from HS is Verve. The one in the pink bottle. Oh, I loved that stuff.

DH is a bit allergic to so many scents. I've got the bottles of Gorgio, Vanderbilt, Tommy and other lovelies sitting on my shelf and can only wear them when I'm not with him. Another of my faves, and I don't know if it's even made any longer, is Victoria Secret's Second Skin Satin Azure....but it's so sweet that it attracts yellow jackets like crazy, so it's a winter-only perfume. Nothing like getting swarmed in the garden, and that's happened to me.

Another fave is Ici...anyone familiar with that one? It was a gift from a friend and now I have to always have some on hand.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

One scent I never wore, but still can't get out of my head...

"I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan,
and never, ever let you forget you're a man,
'cause I'm a wo-man, Enjolie!"

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Hiya Darius ;-)

Evening in Paris was the one I begged my Mom for when I was 11 y.o. ( I think)
Loved the bottle, too.

As an adult ( ??? hehehehe) I have worn Estee Lauder Aliage for a very long time .
It is a more natural green sporty scent and just fits my style.

Product Details:
The very first "sports fragrance."

Fresh, green notes and cool citrus. Exuberant. Engaging. Brimming with energy.

Introduced in 1972, Aliage was an idea ahead of its time. It was called "the sports fragrance," a concept familiar to us now, but absolutely revolutionary at the time. In the seventies, perfume advertising was about ballgowns and glamour, not bicycles and fishing boots. Women were surprised and thrilled by this fresh, cool fragrance and its exuberant, energetic feeling.

Fragrance Type: Green/Citrus

Top Notes: Jasmine, Citrus
Middle Notes: Nutmeg, Rose, Armoise
Base Notes: Oakmoss, Vetiver, Cedarwood >>>>>> end copy

The last few years I very seldom wear any real perfume preferring a quick dab as I run out the door of an essential oil like Nag Champa , amber or a Patchouli blend.

♥Thanks for the memory trip ☺☺☺

Darius -- You reminded me that my mother taught me to spray a light mist and then walk into it. There's something so nicely ceremonial about doing that, and it doesn't leave an overwhelming amount on you.

I was thinking that most girls my age love Old Spice because it reminds us of our grandfathers.

My favorite (besides man sweat) is sandalwood oil..........mmmmm...which has similar phermones...love it.

L'air du Temps - by Nina Ricci
Haven't used anything else for over 30 years.

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

Well, I read this whole thread, and no one has mentioned Fendi. I have worn it for years, have tried to get away from it, but whenever I wear it I always get a compliment. So I guess it smells good with my chemistry. I like the light floral or citrus fragrances now, but I pay attention to compliments, and they always come with Fendi. Sometimes it's hard to find, but I have managed to find some so far...

Anybody remember English Leather on guys? When I was a teenager, it was all the rage. All of my boy-friends wore it, then went to Brut, then on and on. :)

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Oooooh, Fendi. I had forgotten about that. It is a favorite of my aunt and I snitch a spray of it whenever I visit her. She is 75 years old and a very classy lady.

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

I was thinking about this last night. I wore Emeraude, and Tabu... probably 'started out' with Tabu. Also L'air du Temps, or however you spell it. I loved White Shoulders for a while... but it seems that the Fendi is what has stuck with me. I'm wearing Curve right now... but soon will return to the Fendi.

Fragrances bring back a lot of memories...

Lilesville, NC(Zone 7b)

Hmmm I have never heard of Fendi will have to try it out..where does one buy this at if one wanted to?
When I go to Big Lots i look at there purfume they seem to have alot of name brands at el-cheapo prices.
I also where some Avon purfumes like Rare Gold and Far Away Paradise and some others i can't seem to think of right now.
I also love Wind Song...OMGoodness i LOVE that and so does my dh.

However as i said above...Eternity is my absolutely my favorite....I get a bottle like once a year and it will last till the next year.

Ma Griffe (Carven), a favorite of mine, which I still use now and then. Two other favorites are Sung (Alfred Sung) and Il Bacio.

I've got to tell you a story about "Sung". Some years ago I received a birthday gift from son and DIL. A pair of the craziest, funkiest "cat" slippers I ever saw. Furry and hot; which I knew I wouldn't wear in Florida. The price tag had been snipped off, but the remainder of the tag was there - K-Mart. So I decided to return them. I did and they accepted the return and gave me the money !!! That evening I called my son - thanked him for the gift and told him that while I appreciated the thoughtfulness of the slippes I did return them. Silence -- then "Mom -- did you look inside the slippers ? The slippers were a joke, the real present was inside". The present being a bottle of "Sung". I high-tailed it back to K-Mart before they closed. Guess what; they had found the perfume and had put it to one side. I was lucky and I absolutely loved the perfume.

I'm so glad to see this thread pop back up! I'm sitting here with a huge smile on my face. :)

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

Wow! Great that you got there in time to get the "real" present.

I've always found Fendi at Dillard's or Macy's, etc. You can also get it at some knock-off stores like Burlington, or Gordman's.

Back in the mid 80s I sampled White Shoulders at the mall. Sometime later a lady complimented me and asked what it was. She got the strangest look on her face and just turned and hurried away. I thought she was rude or maybe crazy. By then I really liked it and went back to buy a bottle. That night as I was going to bed I spied the bottle on the dresser and it hit me. The woman thought I was a hateful racist. I can only hope that at some point she found out that I didn't make it up. I love White Shoulders but it often triggers that awful memory.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

1960's;Woodhue, Tigress, & Straw Hat were just luscious.
1970s Ma Griffe, Je Riviens, L'Air du Temps, several Avon scents, and one made by Caron
1980'sEstee, Enjole, and 'Le De' by Givenchi.
1990's Knowing by Estee Lauder and last January I splurged wile working 70 hours a week and had a hard to get bottle of "LeDe" sent to my home where it resides in my refrgerator. I fill a small atomizer with it. Finding an atomizer wasn't easy.
I have enjoyed this thread.
I too spray and step into it. The men complement me from the first hour until 10 hrs later so it must work...that's the Knowing for 16years.
Many of those listed above are like good bras. When you fall in love with it they quit making it.

Sidney, I didn't know anyone but me knew of Je Reviens...

Twiggy,

I wonder if perhaps she found the scent to be wonderful,
but upon learning the name of the perfume, was puzzled
beyond the ability to speak.

Example? My sister in law once made the comment that
a particular perfume stunk like rotting tomatoes. One day we
passed a woman who smelled lovely, s.i.l. even commented
on how wonderful the scent was. That same woman was in
the restaurant bathroom, so I asked her what she wore.

I never told my sister in law, but it was the same perfume.

So maybe the lady in your story tried White Shoulders and
it was pure nasty when mixed with her body chemistry. Two
different people wearing the same perfume can often smell
a world apart.

Just a thought, not necessarily the answer in your case. I would
wonder, too, though, why the woman behaved that way. Isn't it funny
how things like that stick with us?

Oh sugarweed, you are memory lane ala nose. Faberge's Woodhue was wonderful.

Just ran into this thread today.

My all time favorite perfume WAS made by Avon called Undeniable. That is what I hate about Avon, you fall in love with something and then they discontinue it!
There is no way I can afford the going price on E-Bay so I'm left to limit the use of the remain 1/4 of a bottle I have left. Hubby LOVES that perfume on me and I only use it on "special" occasions.
I haven't found a perfume to replace it yet and have since stopped purchasing anything from Avon.

I've worn Vanderbilt for about 33 years now. My family has a fit if I talk about trying new perfumes, because Vanderbilt has become MY scent. .

...A close friend told me once that she and her little boy were in the grocery store, shopping, and all of a sudden Tyler said, "Mom, Glenda's here somewhere!". She said, "No she's not. She's visiting her family in Kentucky." Tyler replied, "No Mom! She's here in the store!" Robin said, "Did you see her? How do you know she's here?" Tyler said, "I can smell her!" .....Robin then remembered that they had just passed a lady in the isle and she had Vanderbilt on. Cute huh!? .....I sure hope they keep making it for at least 40 more years or I'm in big trouble....... LOL.

Then when our grandchildren started coming along, I had another issue with my perfume... We have 6 grandchildren - ages 2 to 6 - all boys except for one granddaughter who is the baby. Well, when the oldest ones would give me a hug, I noticed that they smelled like ME afterwards - and little boys should NOT smell like their grandmothers!!!! heehee! So....From then on I started spraying my perfume on the BACK of my blouse or dress so that they could hug me but not smell like me!!! I knew that as they get older, they would really HATE that!!! LOL

When my hus. was in Paris in the late 80's he went by a perfume place and they mixed up some perfume for me. Don't know what it was and the name was not on the box or bottle, but just a dot behind the ears and at the hollow of the throat is enough. When I wear it, people still ask me what it is.

Another favorite of mine is Dazzling Gold, closely followed by Woodhue which Old Vermont Country Stores has come back out with. As soon as we get an extra $40 am going to order a bottle of it. LIZ

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

I don't care for heavy fragrances - sorry, but I never liked Evening in Paris - just reminds me of hard times. I think so many people wore it becaue it was one that they could afford.
My DH used to get me sets of Chanel No5 - one early am, I discovered my young son watching the powder from the box swirling in the toilet as he kept flushing it. I really hated that, I think it was all of $5.00 back then in the 60's. I enjoy Lady stetson, sort of light but nice, I also love Halston.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well ya'll kept it up and finally waged that carrot one time too many. I went to http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/jump.jsp?itemID=787&itemType=CATEGORY&iMainCat=729&iSubCat=787&page=1
And found many of my favorites there. I wonder if they really smell the same?
;)

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

sugarweed - Thanks for the link to the Vermont Country Store. I just ordered a cute shrug that was on sale and in just the color i need to go with a skirt. I was mightily tempted by all those fragrances but not in my budget right now.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

June,
You are close enough to Juarez to purchase from a great old store called Oppenheimers. They too used to carry many fragrances.
Sidney

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Sidney, I'm a long, long way from the Mexican border. ;-) Oppenheimers sounds interesting though.

June

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, I lived in ElPaso for my 20's and we thought Albq was just a skip away. I travel a great deal, often 25,000 miles a year (work) so I'm sure my perception is distorted there.
;)

My very first was Black Rose by Yardley I think ...I would babysit to pay for it...I was about 13 then ...it was a beautiful scent...after I got a job it was Miss Dior ......I would use something different every now and then but always went back to that... until the night I turned 21
and was given a big gift pack of Estee Lauder's Youth Dew...I have worn that over 30 years...once again trying something else when given as a gift ...but always returning to that. I now wear and love Estee's Private Collection ...because ...as others have noted bodies react differently to various scents.....now Youth Dew Screechs at me.....Others that I have flirted with and enjoyed were Lily of the Valley.....Green tea....Lotus........Ivoire mmmmm (mouth watering)
Intimate.....some musks but not all....Topaz by Avon .....Tweed....
Tosca......and in the really hot days...a good eau de cologne like 4711 is still something I wear around the house.I must be getting a bit old though because I like Lavender cologne now for just pottering around in the garden and Avon's citrus blossom.
As someone said somewhere...we love our garden smells best of all as we get older....mother nature makes the best perfumes!
the Angel's trumpets....Daphne....Apple blossom (oooh I forgot that was one early perfume I loved).....tuberose.....red roses...Aaah!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Woudn't it be nice if someone could bottle the scent
of Four O'Clocks? My mother always said "They stink!"
but for the life of me, I cannot figure out what stinks. Maybe
she was calling Four O'Clocks something else, as mine
are bright pink and smell absolutely wonderful.

:-)

Mine too Wuvie....mine too :)

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

If any of you come across "Undeniable" by Avon in your ventures for a reasonable price, would you please keep me in mind?

:)

Kim

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

My favorite of all time was an Avon product called Tocarra (if my memory is working this evening). It was supposed to be made all of natural scents and when I used it I loved that hours later when I rubbed my wrists together that scent would come up again and stay fragrant till bedtime. Of course they had to stop making it. :(

Chanel #5 was my first fragrance and I have loved it ever since Dad gave it to me back when I was a teen. Is it my imagination or does the fragrance from it leave after a fairly short time unlike when it used to be fragrant on my clothes several days later?
