Perfume?

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

I loved a scent by Elizabeth Arden that was out years ago. It was called "Eau Fraische" sp? Meaning "Fresh". It was a springy, light scent that was wonderful. I also remember Sung - wow, that brings back memories. I used to work at Laura Ashley and I liked her #1 perfume and Emma. I wear a Mary Kay scent now - don't know the name but it's in a purply blue bottle. I also have Jessica McClintock.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Can't say I care much for traditional perfumes. I do where the spritzers from Bath and Body Works though. I alternate, depending on mood, between Warm Vanilla Sugar and Ginger Lime.

Middlesbrough, United Kingdom

Tabu. It was the first perfume that my mother bought for me. I still hanker the scent of Aqua Manda though - now THAT's going back a bit!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Oh, and as far as guys go, the scent of Old Spice or Cool Water can turn my head right 'round! lol

Park Forest, IL(Zone 5b)

Beautiful by Estee Lauder and Madly by Ultima II. For a guy I love Cool Water and Tommy on my man!

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

Somebody must love Aqua Velva! It's been around for a long time. Must be just the guys!!!!!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I had forgotten all about Evening In Paris; is it still around? I cannot understand for the life of me why these perfume-makers don't readvertize some of the old scents and get new generations interested in them again.
My mother wore Tweed and I love it but can't find it. Is it still made? Does anyone have a source?
Jontue is pretty good. I like the nice light scent of Jean Nate, but it doesn't last. I told my spousal unit once that I was going out to buy some more Jean Nate and he said, "do you need money for a 6-pack"?
My Mom also wore a Prince Matchibelli, but I'm not sure which one. I'd buy it if I could find it.
My favorite now is Opium. And it lasts and lasts.
All my men wear English Leather..........

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

Ah!! Windsong is still nice too, and Ambush...

MsCritterKeeper, that was so touching. I, too, can still smell the scent of my daddy before going to church on Sunday morning or night, he was wearing Old Spice. I wish now that I had gotten it out of the bathroom upon his death. I know it was just thrown away. This may seem strange but I have always loved men's cologne just as well as women's but more so. I've bought recently CKOne for women and CK for men, it's to die for...another one I love is 'Aspen', wear it all the time....the chemistry in everyone is different so it makes an entirely different smell on everyone.

Back in the 70's 'Sweet Honesty', by Avon...Timeless, Wind Song, and I've always LOVED Vanilla musk or any Vanilla perfume. The Sweet Honesty was probably most worn though when I first started wearing perfume and liking to dress up and fix my hair for boy's LOL....oh boy lolol! I'm having a flashback....with HotFlashes, is it possible!!!!! Don't answer that ehehehe

thanks for taking me down memory lane, this was fun...

Thanks much for starting this thread! It's been great for remembering. And the sense of smell is one of our longest lasting sensations and perceptions. Please remember that when you have someone with dementia. Eventually, it may be lost as well, depending upon the cause, but anything that can bring them pleasureful memories in any form is always welcome!

We've added this to our list of recommendations for family with a member who has dementia. What did they wear, when, what did their mom wear, sisters, best friend? Let's give it a try! It's more than worth the cost of the perfume for them.

What a great suggestion, Judith!

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

Thanks! Sometimes, although you know something, others ideas spark new ideas about how to use what you know. I know that there are a number of people on here that wish so much to communicate with their loved ones, but haven't found a way that works. This just might be what they need! Imagine the look on the individual's face when the light comes on, even if only for a moment!

While my mother still has most of her mind, I do think I will try to find some of her old favorite perfume and take it the next time I go to the nursing home. I think she'd like that. My sister just sends her junk colognes.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Darius this was such a great idea for a thread. I have enjoyed it so much.
Thanks BrugAddict it was a pleasant memory to share.
I was very close to my mother and her loss was an especially hard one for me. My dad wore Old Spice, too! Old Spice must have been very popular with men because so many men my father’s age wore it.

This has been such an interesting thread especially for gardeners because we are exposed to different fragrances on a daily basis. I was out in the garden this afternoon and caught the scent of my Patchouli plant...I find its scent very soothing and remembered wearing it in my teenage years in the early 70's.
There were other scents in the air too, like my pink roses and those coming from my herb garden. The mints, lemon balm, pineapple sage and rosemary were such a summer treat today. The humidity here really enhances the fragrances of the plants I grow. I love to sit in my garden early in the morning and late in the evening just for the fragrance alone.

I find it very interesting how easy a fragrance can trigger one's memories and how some memories can fade to the back of our consciousness, but with the help of just the darting aroma of some familiar fragrance ones emotions can be flooded with those memories at a dramatic rate....reading through all the posts I can see I am not the only one with fond memories to share...

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

For sure!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Amen!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Thanks all for the great remarks. I just remembered that I like Lady Stetson (a junk cologne), lol.

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

I liked Avon's "Bird of Paradise", which I don't think they make anymore. I had a bunch of Avon bottles shaped like various creatures and containing various fragrances. My mom doesn't know where they are now. She thinks they're in the attic. Anything in my parents' attic is a needle in a haystack.

This thread has been a fun trip. Thanks, Everyone! I've enjoyed all the comments and contributions.

Most cologne/perfume I am allergic to, but I used to chance it when I was trying to attract the opposite sex. Now I am married though. LOL It just not worth stirring up my asthma and allergies.
When I did choose a cologne, I LOVED Opium or Coco Chanel. I liked spicy or citrus scents. They seemed to not stir up the allergies as much as flowery scents anyway.

On men, I loved Fahrenheit. :)

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

For men-Eternity
old favorite-Brut
and dad spashed on the aqua velvet and greased his hair down shinny!! :)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Lordy, notmartha... that just reminded me of Brylcream! (A lil' dab will do ya!)

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I used to love the Burma-Shave signs.....

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yah, Me, too. Made any trip less boring!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

You made me laugh out loud, Darius, about Brylcream, boy do I remember those ads! And to think you like channel 5 too.

So does Ponditis!

Midland, TX(Zone 8a)

"My Sin" by Lanvin. All-time fave, and they quit making it. I think L'Oreal bought the Lanvin line, so they still may hold the formula. I've often wondered if the formula could be bought.

"Chanel 5" also great yesterday and today. Thank goodness can still be found.

Pen

Lamar, AR(Zone 7a)

My all time favorite is "Realm" Supposed to have added pheremones to attract the opposite sex. 8-)

I had a lab partner during college who wore a very strong perfume. It's very popular, but on certain skin chemistry, it's a terrible smell. Everytime I smell it, I think of microbiology. That was the class we had together.

Lilesville, NC(Zone 7b)

I think i will add my favorite on here...even though this is like 3 yrs old.....LOL

I LOVE Eternity by Calvin Klein......I also like RED and WING SONG....

Once about 5 yrs ago my dad got me a bottle of eternity and he wrote alittle not on it and it said..."this is how long I will love you....dad"

I just treasure that and as you can see with the pic i have enclosed i put that next to his picture that year and framed it....I look at the pic all the time....i just love it.

Thanks GOD my daddy is still with us....:o)

Not sure if I posted earlier but as a young teenager and a Five and Dime store in town, I so did enjoy...Lily of the Valley..to this day I love the smell....

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

I like Chanel #19 but rarely wear it these days since perfume seems objectionable to so many people. I do have the dusting powder and use a dab of that occasionally.

"Evening in Paris" was my unfailing Christmas present to my mother when I was little. No child could resist that elegant cobalt blue bottle and it was available at Woolworth's. Actually my mother's favorite perfume was "White Shoulders" but she always made a happy fuss over my Christmas present even though I doubt she ever wore it. My grandmother loved "Tabu" which was a very heavy fragrance, almost scary.

Definitely Eternity for men although my DH conservatively sticks to Old Spice.

Fragrance is a wonderful thing to trigger memories.

June

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I remember my older sister wearing Evening in Paris. It is still available @ Vermont Country Store online. I too like Channel #19; a dear brother, since deceased, gave me a bottle for Christmas years ago when he himself had so little cash. I wear the body cream of a fragrance more and more. It seems to be more subtle. Anyone here remember Yardley's Bond Street? My mother wore that forever.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

What a fun thread!

Signing in as one who wore Sweet Honesty, used Avon bubble bath,
later moving up to anything musk. All the good girls wore Sweet Honesty.
LOL. ;-)

I'll never forget the stink, uh, scent of a friend's perfume. For anyone who
liked it, I'm sorry to say, but for some reason, the girls who wore 'Babe' in the
town where I grew up were usually of questionable morals. It never failed, you
could ask one of them what perfume they were wearing, and the answer was
always 'Babe'. Ugh!

Funny these days, when I smell something similar, I always think of the
girls who wore it way back when.

KM

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Like june said, fragrances and memories.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, and how could I forget the smell of my grandmother? Sad to say
it was not a pleasant scent. Back then it was more like stale roses
or Essence of Mildewed Flowers. ;-)

My mother then, and still now wears White Shoulders, though I remember
using her Sand and Sable as a teenager. MMM!

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

When Sand and Sable first came out, (at least made it to our po dunk corner of the world) it was expensive for us, like 20 a bottle in the 80's. I don't think what they sell as SS now smells the same, BUT, I bought my daughter one of the Hollister perfumes, and it smells like the old sand and sable! :) I had forgotten about Sweet Honesty and Babe! I didn't care much for Babe either.

Hubby bought me Narciso Rodriguez and Vera Wang for Christmas, they're ok. I recently started using Nina Ricci, it's a nice fresh scent, but, I'll get tired of it I'm sure and go back to Eternity, I always do. LOL I seem to collect scents but always go back to Eternity.

My grandma always used the Rose Milk, I had forgotten about that!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Melissa,

I, too, wear Eternity all the time, but when I discovered Kenneth Cole
Black for Women, oh my gosh, the Eternity is now taking a break.

:-) KM
oh my gosh,

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

hmmmm another scent for me to collect? LOL I always try really hard to avoid the perfume counters when I go into Macy's--I just can't pass up something that smells heavenly. I was at the outlet mall Sunday, and was very good and didn't go into the perfume store! I'll have to specifically look for the Kenneth Cole now you realize? LOL

Frankfort, KY

I too am very allergic to odors, particularly perfumes. For example I would like to strangle the chemist who invented White Shoulders. My suite-mate in college wore it and gave me migraines all the time. The more I asked her not to wear it, the more she put on. Later in life I had a secretary who did the same. If I asked nicely she not wear it, she would go home at lunch and bathe in it. Needless to say, she was transferred to the steno pool. She tried to tell me it was her consitutional right to wear it. I was told later she didn't like female bosses. Wonder if she liked the steno pool? As far as I know she's still there. No chance for advancement in my firm if you ever landed there.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I wonder why people do that? Of course, I wonder why anyone feels the need to bathe in perfume anyway... LOL

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, yuck, or worse, to cover up the stench of cigarette smell.

Ewwwwww!
