Perfume?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I've been doing a trip down Memory Lane because of a hunt to get an old Worth perfume bottle on ebaY. (Lalique made them.)

I haven't worn perfume (much) in years, yet the one I still have on my shelf and choose to wear when I want to wear one, is Worth's "Je Reviens" (means I will return).

So many old familiar names came up while I was doing a search.

What's YOUR favorite?

My favorite, though not expensive is Jontue'.
I did get a new bottle of RED for my birthday ...

Isn't it strange how we get hooked on a smell?

PLUS, not every perfume smells the same on our skin as on other people, or in the "Testers".

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

I like many, but "White Shoulder's" has been a favorite since I got my 1st bottle at 16...Many years ago..

Yes I think smell is one of the easiest senses to trigger the memory and the emotions...I know after I lost my dear mother I kept a few of her belongings because her smell was such a comfort to me.
One Christmas I opened a box of Chritmas linens and the smell was so overwhelming it brought me to my knees in a flood of emotion and tears....joyous tears and a pleasant Christmas surpise, but the overwhelming emotion was incredible..

MsC, you are right about "smells" triggering memory/emotions. Your story almost made me cry. I doubt I could ever again smell night-blooming jasmine without thinking of my beloved grandfather.

Larkie... I had forgotten about "White Shoulders"...

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

My favorite that I havnt had in a while is Anais Anais(sp?) Second is channel #5 because thats what my mother uses and has since I can remember.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

my favorite is spellbound!!!

i bought evening in paris off ebay-cuz it was one of my mom's that i luved!! The bottle is tight(cool/groovy)too! ;)

avon-sweet honesty is the only avon one i like
and jovan musk is a good one!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Clinique, Happy. I haven't worn perfume in years, DD & DH picked this one out for me. Think they are trying to tell me something?

I don't like many perfumes and don't wear it very often. My favorite is Jungle Gardenia.

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

Jungle Gardenia is my Mama's all time favorite.. We have a hard time finding it around here now, but Elizabth Taylor's new gardenia is almost the same, so we got her some of it for her b'day last month..

I still have a tightly sealed original bottle of Evening in Paris. I had bought it in the 1940's. It is too old to use but still smells the same, but the memories it brings. I bought it in the dime store for 20 cents.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

My goodness, Evening in Paris has been around a long time!

and.. I remember "White Shouders" but not what it semlls like.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

evening in paris brings tears to my eyes everytime i smell it!!!

glad to see others share the memories! :)

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

That was lots of fun to read!

I hardly ever wear perfume though I have a collecton of various scents. In 1945 my husband to be gave me a bottle of Channel #5, it is my sentimental favorite.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Before anyone laughs and says I'm not that old.....LOL
Different scents remind me of different times in my life. One that I have always loved but don't too often buy is Eternity. Another is Beautiful. I had a thing for Obsession too. Hmm, there was a Ysatis d'Givenchy period and there was a Red stage.....see I have been around a couple of years. :) I also used to wear Paloma Picasso, Poison...Good grief! I am a perfume hopper! My favorite of late has been Liz Sport and I sometimes wear Beverly Hills 273. One scent that I have always had a tender spot for is not perfume, but lotion. My great grandma used to use Rose Milk. Anyone remember that? On men, I love Old Spice or Cool Water and sometimes Polo. :)

Edited.

My 'signature' scent if 'Alexandra' by Alexandra de Markoff. Heavenly, but almost impossible to find nowadays.

Other favorites are 'Youth Dew' by Estee Lauder (but only in the old blue spray bottle, which isn't made anymore), 'Oscar' by Oscar de la Renta, and the original 'Sung' by Alfred Sung. Years ago, I also liked 'Sweet Honesty' by Avon, but I can't even remember now what it smelled like.

Darius, so true about perfumes smelling differently on different people. My mother would sometimes wear a scent which I thought just heavenly. One day, when I was in high school, I slathered it all over and went to school. Before lunchtime, I began to notice an ugly fishy odor -- and it was me! That perfume that smelled to good on mom was really awful on me. Phew! Since then, I have always done a 'test-run' on perfumes before going out in public! LOL.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Beautiful and Obsession are/were two of my main fragrances for most of my adult life. Now I'm afraid I lean more towards Bath and Body Works lotions...mostly Juniper Breeze, but I do stray from that sometimes. I LOVED their Orange Blossom fragrance, but they discontinued it. :( Sometimes I just smell like wet dirt and sweat too.

Blue Jeans and Sweet Honesty were fragrances from my teen years. Also Patcheroulli? Not sure I spelled that right.

My Mom's fragrance was a Gloria Vanderbilt scent just called "Vanderbilt". I have a partially used bottle of hers in my bathroom cabinet and it brings tears to my eyes every time I open the lid and smell it. It was a smell that I associate with her and her house. I can also still smell it whenever I open a box of things I brought from her house to mine.

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

Opium, only because my sweet DH makes sure I never run out! When I first smelled it on someone else, I thought, I've gotta get that! Oops! Waaay too expensive for my single mom budget! I love the spicy fragrance.

Ah, Evening in Paris! When I was a child, my dad worked nights, and almost always stopped by the drugstore (the only place open when he got off work). For every "special occasion," he would buy my mom a whole set, perfume, powder, etc. She didn't like it that well, actually, on her anyway. But she wore it anyway, for him. That was the classiest thing he could think of to buy for her, I guess, given his limited shopping interest. I doubt he even knew what it smelled like! I guess he liked the pretty royal blue bottles too! When his job changed to days, he stopped buying it.

Nice memories. I remember using many of those everyone's mentioned.

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

I'm with your Dad, in that I bought my Mom those wonderful cobalt blue bottles of Evening in Paris for Christmas or Mother's Day for years as a child. Years later I figured out the reason there was always one on her dresser was she really didn't use it. LOL revelation. I just loved the bottles.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Sweet Honesty reminds me of my teenage years, ahem, it wasnt THAT long ago, lol.
My favorites are Chole and Escada "tender light", although i have a dresser full of perfume. Happy, Red, Beautiful, Sunflowers, Tommy Girl, and a few more. Then there are the body spritzes and smelly lotions.
I just recently bought Elizabeth Ardens "Green tea" and like that one alot....she has a new one out "spiced tea" that i like just as much. Of course, i HAD to buy them both....right??
Jen
p.s., my true downfall tho is lipstick, how many is TOO many?? I probably have 30 favs?

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Channel #5 is my favorite for my body chemistry but the bottle I had in HS sure lasted a whole lot longer than the stuff you can buy today. It probably had whale oil in it :(

My DH LOVES when I wear any lemon,Gardenia or Lilac fragrances. He says his favorite is the lemon though. I can remember the first fragrance he bought for me was called "Love's Fresh Lemon". Haven't seen any in years though.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Right now the only one I use (when I go out) is Jessica McClintock. Also love Eternity and Lair du temps.(spelling probably wrong)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I remember Chanel #5 was all the rage when I was in high school. I bought a bottle of it from a street vendor on a school band trip in Havana, Cuba.

I like Obsession pretty well, too. But Je Reviens remains my favorite. It's not very common in this country... and I don't know if they even still make it. The perfume only comes in 1/8 oz. bottles and I doubt I will use up what I have left anyway.

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

have stuck with White Shoulders from 13 till 62 i guess i leave this world with it on

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

Taz, be sure to notify your undertaker! Just kidding!
But, after all, who'd know to put it on you?????
LOL

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Majority of the time I wear Eternity, I've worn it forever it seems, but nothing else seems to smell "just right" on me, and last all day. But, I smell something I like and get it, wear it some, then go back to Eternity. So I have a few different bottles sitting in there.
Eternity Orchid,Cool Water for Women, Abercrombie, Tommy Girl, Red Door, Calvin Klein's Truth, Dazzling Silver, Dazzling Gold, and a bottle of Liz Taylor's Sapphires and Diamonds that my mom figured I'd love because I like sapphires and diamonds. I've got a couple of bottles of Elizabeth Arden's really fruity summery smelling stuff she put out a couple of summers ago, has a green top, but for the life of me can't remember the name of it. I have a few other varieties that seem to never get used, but still don't have the heart to throw away... But, always, no matter what, I have a bottle of Sand and Sable. I wore that all through High School, and still love the smell of it, it just doesn't smell as well on me anymore. Weird... but it doesn't.

Funny, we were just talking about my perfume today. My daughter wanted to know what I wanted for my birthday... I told her not to let dad buy me another bottle of Eternity. I have 3 I haven't opened yet!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

It is so funny and sometimes sweet to read all the reasons we like the scents that we do. I'm glad I got to do all the experimenting and shopping I did when I was younger. I always worked two jobs and had plenty of money. Obviously things are different now. LOL So again I say, I am so glad I got to do it before I had kids!! :)

I am laughing at you Sue! I wonder if we are close in age or just taste? LOL

I'll make it a point to check out Spellbound. Thanks Dori!!

Now, if I could just bottle what my back yard smelled like last night! I had brugs and tuberose and moonflower vine and datura all blooming simultaneously. There was also chicken on the grill as well as the faint smell of chlorine. Through in just a hint of fresh cut grass.......okay, who makes that scent???? Oh, forgot the citronella candles!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

DJM,
Really-you lucky girl. Evening In Paris -what memories it brings back. We use to buy it for our Mom's birthday when we were younger. It is such a happy memory. Thank you for bringing it back. When I was a little older I had some of it also.

I also love Chantilly (spelling) because I wore it when I was younger also and oh my lily of the valley. This post has made me think of happy times of years gone by.

Golden, CO(Zone 5b)

They must know our age group. Right beside the Evening in Paris, is the one I need. Tired Old Ass Soak!!

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

Hmmmmmmm.......TOAS.
Add Tonight, and you have TOAST! An absolutely heavenly smell! At least for us old folks!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

How did I forget Eternity? OMG!!! I haven't experienced that scent for about 13 years. I have memories just at the thought of it, but to actually inhale the scent! Youzers! That would bring back lots more I'm sure.

I can't believe that didn't come up in my recollections. That's the scent I wore all the time when my 2nd/permanent/eternal DH and I met/dated/married.

Next time to town, there's a stop at Herbergers on my list. Time to rejuvinate the memories/youthful feelings around here. They do still sell it I hope.

Gawd! Have I really become that much of a drag? Look at my hair!!!! What color is it supposed to be? Brown, red, or grey?

Where'd my body go?

E-Gads!

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

Don't fret JJ! One of the advantages of being at our age is that no one else really remembers what color our hair used to be, so it can be any color we want! We didn't have that option when we were younger, especially if it was dark brown, unless we bleached it!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

LOL! I hope you are right Judith. My hair used to be dark brown, but over the years it's evolved into something resembling sun-bleached mousy brown with some red highlights still persisting, and the grey is starting to win. Even Nice and Easy 118A is struggling.

Still not sure that's a good thing. :)

And the body thing is a lost cause, so my only hope is the scents.

Back to the scents...does Herbergers still sell Eternity? I have a Herbergers within 100 miles and I get to that town on occasion. Adding it to my list of "to do's"

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I have worn White linen by estee lauder for over 20 years, (egads!!) I usually like white linen in the summer and Joy by Jean Patou in the winter. But now, I just wear White Linen when I have it, cant find it in Turkey, I usually bring a bottle back and my son brings a bottle back for me. So it keeps me in stock.
My mother wore "blue grass" by estee lauder, and not that I really liked it or anything when I was growing up, I sure enjoy a sniff of it once in a while. Estee lauder doesnt sell it on a regular basis any more, but once in while, Christmas and mothers day I think, they bring it out....It does bring back memories.
And I know that white linen effects my son, my sister told me that when he went to buy me a bottle, he came and as they were packing his suitcases, he took it out and sniffed it, then handed it over to my sister and said "smells just like mom doesnt it?" I was touched....

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

joan im nice and easy 118A too or sometimes B or somtimes just 118!~

i forgot and thought i was 116 for a few months! LOL
