Map of U.S. subscribers

Here's an interesting map I made. Each red dot represents a subscriber in the United States.

Quite interesting, Could you make it larger, and maybe superimpose state lines on it?

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Now that I like, what perspective that gives

Northern California, CA

Thanks Dave, that's where I was going with my question on the "How many subscribers?" thread. Interesting to see the distribution of subscribers.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Not enough time to impose map over it but side by side should help :)

Thanks, Panamoncreel. It does help!

Here's an edit of that, Panamon.

I like it!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

We're gonna fall in the Atlantic unless we get some new ones over here!!

no place for jokes about falling into the Pacific here, please ; P

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

That last map shows me living in Idaho.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

LOL, Karrie. You didn't know they moved the borders when they changed the zones?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

lol! Guess not! Dave, what kind of software did you use?

The reason why I ask, is because this is what my DH does for a living. Here is a link to his website, if anyone wants to take a look:

GIS stands for Geographical Information Systems

That's pretty cool, Dave. Thanks~

Karrie, I wrote a program to make that map. It used PHP and libgd.

dave

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

That's really neat that you can write your own programs. I don't know what the PHP and libgd means though, lol!

PHP is a programming language and libgd is a library that allows you to more easily create graphics using php. http://www.php.net/ for more info.

Karrie, the Map provided came from GPS software and the individual states are in their correct location but the State labels may not show in their correct location since I had to zoom out far to show the whole US.
Here a little closer so that you see that your State hasn't moved LOL.

Thanks! I was beginning to get vertigo! hee hee

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Oh, and Dave, thanks for that link, since it was Russ that didn't know what that is (he's not a programmer - but has thought about dabbling into it, in the GIS world). I'll make sure he sees the site.

Crossville, TN

Goodness! Look at all those DOTS I haven't met yet!! So many dot, so little time.....Jo

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

It would be great to see a World map of subscribers to go with your US map.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

And interesting to see a map showing US population density.

1990 data.....pretty much follows the DG subscriber density.

edited to add.....

Glad I live in the wide-open Midwest!!! ;-D

yes, that was a nice map - kinda goes to show the pop in here.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Not too many subscribers from Montana.. :D

Crossville, TN

Evert....not many PEOPLE in Montana....Wide open spaces...and beautiful! LOL Jo

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Wow...thanks for the map

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Cool beans! I gotta find all those subscribers in Wisconsin!
~julie~

Oh...forgot! THANKS DAVE! ;-)

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Must be like Finland ;) No wonder most Finns moved to Montana :D

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Wyoming is awfully sparse too. Except for a few areas, Wyoming is not as pretty as Montana.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

And your loyal subscribers from Alaska and Hawaii would be where? Sigh, forgotten again.

Weezin, they were indeed on my original map, but I had to crop it out since it made the image about 2000 pixels wide. It was actually to scale, so there was a few dots in the great state of Alaska, and a few out in the Pacific. I apologize. :(

Really, the map is/was a bad idea, since it not only excludes our friends in the better 2 states, but it leaves off all non-US residents.

dave

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Well, at least you didn't stick us down on the coast of California like the weathermen do. LOL! Really, we Alaskans (can't speak for Hawai) have developed a thick skin about such things. You'd be surprised how many people think they have to use a customs sticker to send me seeds from the lower 48. Some seed companies won't ship here, telling me we're not within the continental United States... we may not be contiguous, but we're darnright continental. I suppose the Canadians could take exception to US citizens considering themselves 'Americans'... as if no one shared the continent with us. LOL!

Ah, well, the map was not a bad idea at all. It puts things in perspective. I'm sure those of us that were not represented on the map were but a dot or two here or there. It does show that the greatest concentration of membership is in the Southern & Eastern United States, but then, I could have told you that! All you lucky guys slurping up fresh tomatoes and posting those mouthwatering pictures of produce... sigh!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

It's nice to see where all our Gardeners are. Looking forward to see the world map, lol

New Braunfels, TX

Cool maps, Dave! What's next? You are really full of surprises and I get such a kick out of seeing what you come up with next. All the best & thanks.

Cheers,
P

Hi poozak, great to hear from you! I hope all continued to be well with you and Kathy.

best,
dave

Crossville, TN

Dave....why not put a little insert in the area of Montana and call it Alaska and Hawaii? It's rather empty anyhow. It might encourage growth there! LOL Jo

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I absolutely love the Kalispell, Whitefish Montana area - gorgeous. I'd live there except they have very harsh winters - that I wouldn't like. But what is nice is it isn't that far for me to visit.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Boy sure is lonley here in the Texas Panhandle! I am the only dot :( Need to get busy with a membership drive. I'll put it on my list of Important things to do. Meanwhile, it sure is nice rubbing elbows with nice folks all over the country (and world). I like the map Dave, can't wait to see the World Atlas!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I think I can locate my dot in WA state, it is the only dot in what is North Central WA, there are now several dots on the coast. Donna

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

A dot in time and a place, ah but, all brought together by one love, gardening and by one special person, ((((Thanks DAVE :))))
