Show us your yard!! PART 2

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Good for you, Blooms....recycle ..reuse..

I would love to show you my garden ..the gate is open..come on for a stroll.....

You can't see them in this pic..but I have a Mme. Alfred Carriere climbing rose on one side of the arbour, and a Don Juan climber on the other..they are new and the rabbits set them back..but when they grow up and over it will be really pretty.

Cheers,
Carol

Ohh GW- what about a clumping Bamboo? Or those really tall EE's? Some get like 25 ft tall. :O

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Bamboo might be okay, but might look weird under fir trees. EE's would require too much water in that dry shade. I think I'll start a thread in the landscaping forum with my dilemma.

Van Tassell, WY(Zone 4a)

Starzz, Your gardens are incredible. I am definitlely taking mental notes for my new gardens at my place. You are very creative and talented.

Lamar, AR(Zone 7a)

Starzz, im printing out a personal copy of your 'Hosta Garden'. I hope the area pictured below will look half as good as yours!

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

gijane..thank you very much. Having the apple trees as the walls helps to create different "rooms".

Osteole..that will be a perfect place for a Hosta Garden.
Have fun creating it with all the hostas that catch your eye.
My latest hosta is Fire and Ice..

the view from my 'office' window - when i designed the walkway i did it from up here so the curve would be pleasing to me. i wish i had a nickle for every time i had to go up and down the steps to move the hose or the bricks to get it right - the next pic will follow the path

I could work there!!!! And gladly go move the hose! Pretty pretty!

future major hosta border - front yard towards the street - still protecting my babies from the deer - hopefully if the tree guard/plot saver works DH can remove the fencing next spring

PS i love our trades!!!! thanks!

steps up to the kitchen patio [mother's day present built by DH and kids a few years back] - that bed has gone from crown vetch to ferns to daylilies....hmmmm what will be next?

Great job handhelpers, the pool is spectacular with that brick, excellent job.

As I looked at your garden I just kept saying..ooohhhhhh

What a wonderful serene garden you have created.
I can see it must have been a big "labour of love"

The stone cottage, and the brick paths, really give character.

Well done!

Coopersburg, PA(Zone 6b)

starzz - LOL - that's what i kept saying every time i looked at your pics! and everyone else's too!!!

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

It is fun to show our gardens to others who have created their own unique style. I think when you create a garden it shows a part of your personality.

Happy gardening.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

HH absolutely stunning - 20 years of love shows!

Starzz WHAT are those white flowers in that long distance pic? Don't tell me they are daisies or I will croak. WHAT a view!

I love my garden but I envy all of you who have all that space to work with - love that hidden feeling you get - mine is all open, trying to create some feeling of space in the crowded 'burbs I guess. But it must be wonderful to walk through all those "rooms" - just so peaceful. Love seeing all these yards, better than 10 garden books because they are "real" gardens by real people who live there, not paid landscapers. Since gardening has become fashionable and has its own TV shows I've noticed all the 'better' neighborhoods have gardens out front that are obviously designed to look like the homeowner did them - "carefully-planned-casual", if you know what I mean. Laughable. Nobody who gardens could possibly mistake em for the real thing! Thanks for showing your stuff everyone - even if it makes some of us feel like starting over!
dd (going outside to start over...)

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

DD..yup..they are Shasta Daisies
in the forward bed to the left is White Candytuft.
I also have some dwarf Shasta in there.

I agree about looking at "real" gardens.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

OK, I am now seriously dying...those are SHASTA DAISIES??? What do you feed them, small children???? The largest shasta I've seen round here is "Becky" - about 3 feet with 5 inch blooms and I though that was big! I just gotta move...

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

I'd guess these to be about 4ft.tall
I don't know the exact name as I have had them for ages.
You make me grin... :)

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

Wow I am floored again...any chance of getting a division in the fall?????? I am willing to crawl and beg!

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

You got me curious..I just went out and measured. The very tallest bloom is 46".
But most are in the 40" range. The blooms are 4" across.
I looked up Becky Shasta Daisies on Google and this must be the same, as they list her to grow 40" tall.

I think maybe all the rain we have been having has helped her grow taller. I don't feed many of my plants and they grow in clay.

I wonder if they would make it all the way to Louisiana. I live in Ontario Canada. But I'll try if you like.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

Would love to try starzz - Probably is Becky - they are the largest. Have to wait till weather cools though - ship and plant em dormant in the fall is the only way they'll make it here. I'm fixing up a new bed to try delphs in since my old one got shaded out. Can you picture the daisies in front with "Summer Skies" delphs behind! MIGHT even come close to yours since the delphs are such hogs - soil has to be the best, WITH lots of water AND perfect drainage.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Ok..delph..we'll try in the fall.
Sounds very beautiful.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

(deep breath)

I have started working on my yard a little with all of this inspiration on this thread but this is a before of what I have mostly been doing in the kitchen garden (the yard can wait for new grass and a sprinkler system):

Oak Grove, MN(Zone 4a)

Wow, big change. I love it. I love before and after pictures, I always take a bunch every year.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Starzz, in the first pic on this page, what are the big pink flowers behind the little girl (fairy, nymph?)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

And here is the front garden- easy peesey albeit common stuff because its mostly lantana and salvia with some cosmos, lavenders, agapanthus, etc thrown in. Most of the Mexican Salvia are going away to make room for my iris. The fountain grass is going away for more cannas.

Oh- and that is snail vine and potato vine on the gate.

And, one more thing, I hate the color of the house but we only bought last year.

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

DaisyA - I love your garden and your house [even the color]. You've done a big job already, loooks great.

Hands, your yards overwhelm in their gorgeousness. I knew the hose you were moving was the one you were using to lay out the paths. I do that too, outline beds, lay out paths. I don't know how you get any work done in that office, I'd be gawking out the window. Beautiful.
This thread is so much fun. - Blooms

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Woodspirit..those flowers are a large delphinium "Cherry Blossom" that had fallen over from all the rain. Because I took the pic close-up they look larger. This is a photo when they are begining to open.

Daisy..Your home and garden is lovely....completed beautifully with a white picket fence..
Was it your dream to have a white picket fence?

Many years ago it was most girls dream to be married, have a couple of kids and a home with a white picket fence.(I'm showing my age ) LOL

When I saw your first photo I thought those cucumbers will be wandering all over soon. I notice you have some corn too. Must be fun to go right outside your door and pick veggies for dinner.

Cheers,
Carol

DaisyA, Love your garden pictures, house looks great to me.

Starzz, You have such a beautiful garden with all the rooms, wish I could walk through with you.

Handhelpers, and yours too, so pretty , hope you can keep the deer out of your hosta. I had not closed my gate all summer and the deer finally decided to come in again. Did a lot of pruning before I started closing the gate again. Didn't find my daylilies or hosta tho.

This is such a great thread. Love looking at all the pictures. Donna

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Starzz - next trip home I'm knocking on your door! We go thru Newcastle, usually way up and way back. Once in a while go 401 or toll road but like to avoid the 'city' if possible. :)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

daisyavenue - appropriate name for such a lovely spot in your neighborhood!

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

OMGosh Daisy your house is gorgeous! You should be on HGTV! Amazing how all the flowers looks so nice with such a beautiful home behind! I spend all my time desperately trying to disguise my little red brick box! Or else just ignoring the front yard as hopeless! :)) Thanks for the pics! Love mixing the veggies and flowers too. Tried shallots? They are actually very striking and they bloom too!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Oh, thanks, ya'll. I always wanted a house like this. My Dad builds new houses and I have a thing for old stuff. And yes, the white picket fence was a corny bonus!!

Don't have any shallots- I will add that to my list with eggplants that mystic suggested. I am working on the beds around the yards in the back now (you have only seen part of the mess!) and will get somewhere with them one day.

The proudest bit is taht we live in downtown urban Long Beach and have a farm- a litle, little farm but its fun.
