Hi! For anyone in the Northern CA area, there is a Garden Tour being planned in Eureka on September 12.
I just saw an article in the paper about it. If you are interested in more info, they do have a website...
http://www.hbgf.org/
It is $20, and will feature 12 gardens from the Cutten area of Eureka, Humboldt Hill, Humboldt Botanical Garden, Loleta, and Fortuna.

Hiya, strever,
Cool! (lordy that is like 10 days away!)
Can't wait to see everyone!!
(see, I am just practicing hard on not getting too pent up and jealous that we don't get a Kentucky sized round up so I am coming with PLANTS and GAMES and TALENT SHOWS and KIDS ACTIVITIES and...naw, I am just going to be happy to meet everyone ; ) )
Hi, Dick.
I hate to sound like a newbie, but I'm not familiar with the term "PNW".
I just looked up Hiouchi, and you're not too far away... ok, about 3 hours, but that's fairly close. I do hope you'll come to the Garden Tour. I didn't make it to the one last year, but I heard it was really nice.
Lori
Lori
it's a habit i will have to break myself of
PNW= Pacific North West
i sometimes use CNW Calif.
CNW = coastal north west
i'm still in FV for medical reasons
will be north with in 90 days
but i said that a year ago
my sister wants to go on the tour also
she is in Red Bluff
so if i am healthy enough i will be there
& i hope you do go so we can meet, it is almost exactly between us
Daisy
i wanted to bring something also but Donna said not to
Dick
Well she doesn't get a choice cuz my kareoke machine goes where I go!
Just joshing- I am not going to make everyone sing. At least not too early in the evening. : )
I am making something to bring and she is not turning away food, I can tell you that.
Well, the tour sounds like a lot of fun. If you are planning on going, post again on this forum, and I'll keep an eye out for you!
lori
maybe we should start a list of DG gardeners going to this affair ?
i'm going
BjsBloomers is going
who else ?
I'm going, and I'm bringing at least two friends... I forgot to buy tickets though, so I'll have to run by Pierson's in Eureka and pick mine up. So many things to do, so little time....
Got to remember to:
Buy tickets...
Bring Camera...
Light Sweater for typical Northern Humboldt weather...
Anything I'm forgetting?
Lori
Lori
i bought tickets over the phone with my Visa card
bought 5 tickets, of course i got the member discount :-)
Dick
Ok, Dick, rub it in!!! *sniff* I'm not a member yet, but I plan on joining that weekend.
How do we plan on finding one another?
Lori
Lori
i was looking over the map for the garden tour
there are 3 gardens in Eureka/Cutten
then south to the college of the redwoods for the botanical gardens
& near by the the garden at the wildlife refuge
then the next 2 are in Loleta
including the Loleta cheese company garden
this seems to be in the middle of the tour
south of Loleta are 5 gardens in Fortuna
the tour doesn't start until 10 AM
so you have plenty of time to get a membership & tour guide :-)
BTW: on Sat. the day before
the Victorian town of Ferndale is having a city wide
Bargain Lovers' Weekend. IT'S A GARAGE SALE... IT'S A BARN SALE... IT'S A SIDEWALK SALE... IT'S A... BARGAIN LOVERS' WEEKEND! It's the biggest sale of its kind in the history of Humboldt County. From Main Street to side streets the whole town is getting in on the act! More than 100 different locations offering everything from antiques to zithers. New and used merchandise... toys... tools... gadgets galore... clothing... household... plants and garden... games... puzzles... kids' stuff! WOW!!! Just look for the BRIGHT YELLOW SIGNS that mark each location! Shop 'til you drop in and around the business district. Food, fun and shopping... it doesn't get much better than BARGAIN LOVERS' WEEKEND! 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
we will be in Fortuna visiting relatives & most likely start with the 5 southernmost Fortuna Gardens
we would most likely get to the Loleta cheese company just after noon - just a guess
maybe a good place & time to meet ???
i will be very conspicuous with a new blue Hummer
& i will be with 3 ladies & a brother in law (my wife, my baby sister & her husband, & my cousin)
maybe we DG'rs should just wear bright purple hats or something like a peacock feather :-)
or some other means of identification ?

You are making me green...... : P
WOW... The big sale in Ferndale sounds like a ton of fun! I'll probably need to check that out. You never know what you're going to find in a sale like that.
I'm in LA now, otherwise I'd have gone to Eureka to buy my ticket. I'll have to buy it Friday, when I go to (hopefully) pick up my new glasses. :)
Yay! I will see clearly now....
Lori
Michelle
your more then welcome to come along :-)
Dick
Thanks- wish that I could but start of the school year and all of that. sigh
Dick, I don't have a bright purple, hat do you?
Maybe we ought to get those paper name tags & put "DGer" on it cause if you are away from your Hummer we wouldn't know it was you. I'll probably start at the north end as I'll be driving in on Sun. AM. Maybe the Loleta Cheese factory is a good meeting place. Around noon.
This will be fun! I went to the backyard habitat show last year.
Bj
I switched a few things around and will be attending this tour. I would love to meet up with you and be able to say I actually met other DGers. So where and when folks? ( I'll be the beach ball shaped lady with the big grin)
No purple hat! Oh dear, this just won't do...... oh never mind, I lost mine too!
Lunch.... Seafood...Chinese... American....Mexican.... or coffee shop/fast food? I usually work Sundays so will have to check around to see who is open for lunch. ( Mexican food here is not all that good).
You won't have any trouble spotting me. just look for the 5' X 5' beauty that looks like this.
p.s.
And I will have on a brand new PURPLE hat for the occasion.
edited to add on

If it was the Thai place on the main drag at the Y it is out of business :~(
The Seafood Grill is good or the restaraunt out on the Marina or even the Sizzler now that they put in that great salad bar. Or for decent food and tacky decorating there is Adelle's (their decorating is a lot like the Purple hat I will have on~ ) There is the Hometown Buffet where everyone can be sure to find something they like to eat
On this end there is Hunan's and Pepper's (related to Adelle's). I don't eat out much so there are others I don't know. There is also Angelina Inn at Fernbridge and Ivanhoes in Ferndale but I don't know if they are open for lunch or just dinner.
There is also a pretty good jamacan place on 4th? (South-bound 101) it is almost right across from the Library. It is called "Ijals", I believe. There is also a pretty good Mexican place on the north end of Eureka, just north of Kinkos on the left.
I haven't been to the Sizzler in a couple of years, so that would probably be ok, and Hunan's is always yummy. I'll be travelling with a Vegetarian, so I'm limited to what she can eat, but she's pretty versatile.
As for the picture, I'm the one kneeling down, below the Easter Bunny. (The only photo I could find on this computer!!!)
Lori
There is a huge article in the "Redwood Times", (Local paper) about the Garden Tour on Sunday. It is pretty huge, so I'll just give a run-down on the different gardens, and skip the rest.
--Beginning in the Cutten area of Eureka, the Dodd garden eschews lawn for a wonderful and colorful mix of perennials in the front, and ferns and wild iris to complement the surrounding forest in the back yard. A labor of love, Ms. Dodd hand-laid the 4,800 bricks that make up 4 patios. The Rogers garden shows how children, play equipment, and pets can happily co-exist in peacejul garden setting where family and friens can share outdoor time together.
The Pace garden on Humboldt Hill, faced with the challenges of cold ocean winds, hard clay soil and voracious deer, has been transformed into a landscape with 189 azaleas and rhododendrons, 120 asst trees including 16 japanese maples, 5 types of bamboo, and an array of shrubs, perennials, vines and bulbs.
The Gex garden in Loleta is the achievement of three generations of family members working together to create a garden with a wide variety of shapes and sizes in a rainbow of colors
Moving on to Fortuna, Dee Daneri's Garden is a feast of heathers and dwarf conifers along with beds of azaleas, hydrangeas, roses, annuals, and rare trees from around the world. Lemonade will be served at this garden. The cottage-style garden of Pat and Tracy Stone has been carefully nurtured into a colorful display of perennials and Old English roses as well as handmade garden art. And participants won't want to miss the Morris garden, inspired by the gardens of New Orleans.
The Kessee garden is a magnificent platnscape containing over 1,200 heaths and heathers, plus dwarf conifers and flowers trees and shrubs, all overlooking the Eel River Valley. Next door, the Johnson garden features a large landscape including an English garden, a formal garden with Rhododendrons, heathers and conifers, and a bog garden, currently under development.
Participants will be treated to Tea and Scones at the Humboldt Bay Nat. Wildlife Refuge's visitor center.

Wow. Sounds great, I can't wait.
Lori
I agree, Hunan's is always yummy! I don't know the Jamacan place but it sounds interesting. We don't want to have your companion starving. Do you know their menu enough to know if there would be something on it your friend would enjoy?
Yep. She loves fish (although I don't), spicy stuff, and all things oriental and mexican. We can usually find a restaurant in Eureka that will suit both of us. About the only place she can't go, is Applebee's. Weird, but true.
The only thing about the Jamacan place, is that it may not be open on Sunday. Hunan's would probably be best.
Lori
I think you are right. Hunan's is a great choice. I'll have to try the Jamacan place with Bob one of these days though. It sounds interesting.
Hi, All!
It looks like we will be starting our tour at the Loleta garden this morning, and working our way around from there. The plan (for my friend and me) is to be at Gon Sea (sp?) in Northern Eureka at 1-ish, have lunch, and continue from there.
Gon Sea is *just* south of the New Target, on the North end of town, for those who are not familiar with it. I'm in blue jeans and a burgundy, long sleeved sweater (which may, or may not be covered by a jacket), and I'll bring my Peacock feather! No purple hat, though.
See you in a couple of hours!
Lori
Looks like I may miss you Lori! I am starting on the Fortuna end and planned to meet everyone at Loleta around noon as mentioned above by Strever. I'll keep my eyes open for that feather just in case though. If you see a short round lady with a purple hat with red flowers on it (made it as tacky as I could) please introduce yourself to me!
Hi, Zany!
I think I saw you at Loleta Cheese, but I missed your post, and didn't know about the purple hat. I was talking to BjsBloomers, who brought her *adorable* boxer puppy! I never did see Strevor... We managed to see all the gardens except the HBGF garden at College of the Redwoods.
What fun! I look forward to uploading the pictures, but my friend has the camera. Maybe tomorrow night.
Lori
Oh my! That was BjsBloomers with the pup! I sat there at the Cheesefactory and talked to her while I waited for everyone to show up! LOL So I guess I met her afterall! I Talked to several ladies that looked like your picture but gave up after the 3rd one was the wrong one. Butyes, the nut case in the purple hat was me looking like a rolly polly hobbit.
Yes! That was you! I was just about to leave when you sat down across from Bjs, and I remember glancing at you, but got distracted by something that was said. Did you get to meet Strevor? I never did see his blue Hummer. Oh, well.
This is a picture of a really pretty pot-fountain at the first house we stopped at this morning, in Fortuna. Hands-down, my favorite house. All of the cute bugs made of propane tanks, and great meandering trails through the heathers and shrubs. What a nice garden.
The battery on my camera died, so I got two pictures, then spent the rest of the day using Toni's camera!
Lori
What were color shirts were you and your friend wearing?
I only made it to 3 gardens and had to scoot on in to work. So post the pictures and show me all I missed!
