I love Dave's Garden and the people here! I'd love to get to know you guys.
Tell me about yourselves! I don't want to be nosey so don't post anything you don’t want to say. Examples of things to tell about yourself: Male or female, job, age, self photos (I love to see what other gardeners look like), location, family, hobbies, pets whatever you want to let other know about you.
Tell me about yourself
I'll start; maybe I'll post a photo later if this kicks off:
My name is Michelle, I'm 18 (almost 19) and I live in Maryland, USA. I'm currently a college student. I love all kinds of gardening and my other hobbies include art, exercising, cooking, skiing, fishing, hiking and romance novels.
I live with my family, mom, dad, and two brothers. I have a three year old poodle named Ginger who is more like a little sister than a pet. I also have two peach faced lovebirds Daisy and Clover, a hermit crab Mr. Popadapolis, and tropical fish.
I love anything that has to do with nature. I also like anything sweet and I like traveling though I haven't traveled much. I have insomnia other sleep problems so I sleep a lot. I didn't technically "graduate" from high school because of that but I got my GED so I can go to college and move on.
I’m trying to move somewhere out of the country by the end of the summer but I don’t know if it’s going to happen anytime soon.
This photo was taken August 12, 2002. I am the second from the left. I have made my living programming accounting systems for small businesses. At the moment I am nearly retired, just one client, Mike Frank http://franksupply.com/, the is on the left. He took me and a couple of other fellows to Thorne Bay Alaska and you see one days salmon fishing.
I grew up on a farm in Nebraska, did not like making a living farming, but learned to enjoy growing plants. I was single when I bought my house. When I went to look at a house I would first look at the size of the lot and the soil. If that was satisfactory I would then look at the house.

I have arthritis in my hips, knees and shoulders so I do not get on my hands and knees to dig in the dirt anymore. Instead I have plastic tables on my back porch and grow things in Styrofoam cups. I have quite a collection of Epiphyllums that I have gotten from other Dave's Gardeners. When I have extra plants I take them to the Senior center and give them to people who want them.
My wife Sue is not much interested in gardening but she tolerates my interest very well.
We have three cats, Negra, Samuel and Reba. Our world revolves around them. At the moment Reba is laying on top of the monitor.

Now THAT is a really nice idea! One that I will implement in my area. Thank you!
HI all what a great idea I am Sandy. My DH hates my nickname here says I am neither Old nor is my name rose yes he is a darling. Love to garden have just flowers now next year when youngest is in collage I will start up my small veggie garden again. I am a travel agent by day and teach gymnastics by night. I love both jobs but wish I had more time. I started back at gymnastics because it was the only way to spend time with my darling daughter (she finished 9th in the nation this year at level 9) now I am hooked on the kids their energy and their wonderful outlook on life. I have 2 kids 20 & 17 I won't get too started on them as I could brag for hours on that subject. Been married 23 years to the same patient man. No pets anymore my son is terribly allergic to dogs and cats. Besides gardening and my kids I love to build things, refinish wood, and generally try anything I haven't had a chance to try in the past. I am currently refinishing a front porch swing my Grandfather made as a wedding gift to my grandmother. It has about 80years of shellack (sp) but I can't wait to see it when I get done they just don't make things like that anymore. Attached is a photo of me....... Just kidding it is my DD I am "working" right now and don't have a photo of me available. I have a family photo on my page here but it is 3+ years old I will try to update soon.

Hi All, good thread, always like to learn to know people on DG. I am a widow, was married for almost 50 years, but husband passed away a couple of months early. Have been a gardner all my life. Just love planting things and watching them grow. Have more than a 2 acre garden, flowers and veggies. I live in the desert area of North Central Wash. Have lived in this area all of my 78 years, except 1 1/2 years when I was a child. a
My favorite flower is anything that blooms. I moved here to this particular place 9 years ago, there was nothing but sagebrush and grass. The first thing I did even before my triplewide was moved into place was to plant a few trees. Trees are so important. I enjoy watching wildlife especially birds. If I can locate a picture in my files will send it along.
You dont look 78!!! Wow I wont look that good when I'm 40, LOL!
Gee Whiz! What a great and diverse group of individuals.I've been retired from County employment for about 12 years and have enjoyed it beyond words. For hobbies I enjoy cooking, reading, photography, woodcarving, stained glass,meso-american archaeology and remodeling (when my wife lets me)but gardening seems to be more of a passion than a hobby. We are blessed with a wonderful son, marvelous DIL and two splendid grand daughters. What more could a person ask for? other than lower property taxes.
BTW, Brugie- how did you get 4 pictures to fit together like that?
This message was edited Jun 27, 2004 6:42 PM
Bal-
you acan take your pictures into something like photoshop and then create a new picture- then copy and paste the ones you want together. Sometimes you have to resize them. It's fun. :-)
Wow! What a great idea for a thread. Stuff like this is great to read!
Where to start...My name is Michelle and I'm 30 years old. I have a beautiful 6 year old son named Skylar. He IS the pride and joy of my life. He finished Kindergarten in May. Every morning for the first week of summer vacation he would ask "Do I have school today?" LOL. His concepts of time haven't developed yet :p
In the last two years I have been dating (now a serious one :) my sweet "boyfriend" James. He is such a good man, very even tempered and keeps me stable! He likes plants, but doesn't know details. He enjoys the work I do in the garden. (I think! LOL)
I enjoy gardening (duh), any kind of physical activity. I really dont like to watch tv ('cept NBC thursday nights and now friends is OVER!! WAAAH). If 'm not cleaning house or outside, I read variety of board forums, play asheron's call, design my web pages or general fiddling on the web.
I try to do aerobic activity 3 times a week. My mother had quadruple bypass surgery at age 40? 45?, so I do my best to eat right and stay strong in the body. Its aggravating to work so hard and still have pudgy body fat! *rolls eyes*
I teach science classes at the junior high level, therefore I have lots of time during the summer to play in the yard!
Those who have read some of my threads know that I have moved into a new house with relatively NO landscaping. There is probably 5 acres here for me to garden my life away! My goal is to sit in my yard 10-20 years from now and enjoy all its spendor.
As for pets, I have a labrador retriever (Aspen) who's 16 years old. I received her from a high school friend when she was 6 weeks old. My parents took care of her while I was in college, but she came to live with me thereafter. At my son's whim, we tried chickens for a while. I have to admit, Mr. Rooster, as we affectionally called him, was a hoot! His antics were always amusing, but I couldn't stand his loud mouth and mulch throwing parties. I recently gave all the chickens to a friend who has farm. James has 3 cats who are very sweet. You might have seen a pic of sweet velveta napping in the garden. Last but not least is the closest animal to my heart, horses. I grew up with a horse at home. My parents did not have acreage in which to keep a horse, but I was so adamant, they agreed to let me buy one ONLY if I payed for everything myself. I had friends who had farms. I mostly kept her at other people's places. Shadow was an older grade mare, (not a registered breed) but she knew so much and miles of patience. I enjoyed riding around the national forests where we lived and competed every year at the county fair. I was Rodeo Queen three different years. :) I had to sell Shadow when I graduated high school. My parents were NOT in agreeance to taking care of her while I was in college! My love for horses was so deep, I majored in equestrian science! For a couple years after graduating I gave riding lessons and competed in American Paint Horse (APHA) Associated shows. My claim to fame was in 2000 when my two year old stallion finished in the top 15 2year old western pleasure class at the APHA World Show. There were over 100 horse in the class. Two weeks later I rode him to a Circuit Championship at the Margarita Classic in Fort Worth TX. *sigh* The memories are wonderful. I no longer have horses, my last four were sold a few months ago. I'll just limit the explanation to one word: Divorce.
The one plant which started my love for gardening? Can't limit it to one, but I can mention two: Hosta's and Clematis. I think those were the first two plants I purchased at my first home.
My goodness! Too much babbling. I'll save some server space for other people's comments ROLF!!
Zanymuse a.k.a Brenda 52 years young and a basically average type person. I enjoy gardening, reading, music of many genre's, and the internet. I have a strong desire to be artistic and very little talent to back it up so I compensate by being a really bad artist who has a lot of fun laughing at my poor efforts.
I put myself through college working as a security guard and then spent 28 years as a window covering consultant in the decorating field. Then moved home to be near my parents who are in failing health and came full circle by once again being employed as a security guard in the capacity of Certified Weigh Master.
My favorite people are those who take life seriously enough to know it is important to enjoy it and not be too serious, too often, yet are not so busy clowning about that they miss the important things in life such as family and friends.
I also enjoy writing really bad poetry and rhymes as many here will attest :~) But they put up with me anyway. I also have a bent for more serious writing and have several half finished works going....and going...and going. But I can't seem to get them finished.

Some links to pictures there. You can always click on my name and go to my homepage where you can find some "bla bla". The "IN" against my name stands for "India" not Indiana.
Gardengirl1204 - aka Jeannine. I'm 43, married 11 yrs to the most patient man alive! Have 2 beautiful children - Savannah 9 (going on 19!) and Walker 7. I think I got my gardening gene from my Grandfather who was the neighborhood green-thumb, although the first plants to peek my interest were Hollyhocks and Foxgloves. I am a nut for the cottage garden/English Garden style of gardening. I made an English style garden in my back yard with white picket fence and an arbor my DH built me. I have raised beds for veggies and flowers.
I work full time in the financial world and my gardening is my therapy! I've been a Master Gardener for a year now and love it! I volunteer when I can some weekends.
In addition to gardening, I cross stitch, mosaic, make soap and am learning to quilt. I love baseball - go Orioles! and Indy racing - go Dario!
Future goals: to win the lottery (you have to play though, right?), build houses in Jackson Hole Wy, New England and St John, USVI. landscape it all with whatever I want - no matter the price and then lay in the hammock and watch it all grow - only for a second though, cause I know there's got to be something out there that needs to be moved or re-dug, or something like that!
We have an 11 yr old Golden Retriever - Hobbes and 2 new guinea pigs - Clover & Reggie (both girls, thank God!) that of course, I'm taking care of! WHEW!!!
Well CaptMicha, great thread - thank you!

My name is Kelli (obviously). I grew up in Pennsylvania and now live in a suburban section of Los Angeles, which has got to be plant paradise. I am really close to 40 years old. I have an unemployed DH and 10 goldfish. I am a rocket scientist (rocket engineer, actually). After DH gets a new job, I plan on quitting, as my health is not that great. I am really, really looking forward to that. As for the picture, just visualize the standard white trash fat woman. That's close enough. :-)

Dear Cap
What a great idea for a thread! I've enjoyed reading all the people who've responded to your thread and seeing their pictures. I am a retired teacher-I've been retired 2 years, and my husband is retired from state government. We live in Tennessee halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga. We are both avid gardeners and have a landscaped manicured 8 acre yard as well as a formal flower garden and several garden islands. The only thing about our beautiful yard is that we are getting too old and have too many ailments to maintain it the way we want it to be so we are trying to sell our home and move to NY state where my husband grew up. We also maintain 23 acres of woods where we have hand cut over 2 miles of trails and put down wood chips on all of it. Within those 23 acres are 2 landscaped ponds. We have lots of wildflowers and native shrubs and trees which are very beautiful- if I do say so myself. My husband and I have spent our lives working here - and the beauty we've created comes from back breaking work and patience waiting for things to grow. We have no children, and this acreage has been our "child". We've probably spent as much on this place as sending one or two children through college (ha). You would really enjoy going to the chat room on Tues. and Thurs. here as you get to talk and joke with lots of fellow gardeners all over the world. Good luck to you in your gardening pursuits-there is little on earth as rewarding as watching things grow.
Hello LGW728,
what an absolutely BEAUTIFUL Place you must have created.
Do You have any Pictures to share ? Please post some if possible.
Thank You in Advance,
Brigitte
Dear Eg-
Thank you for your kind words. I have lots of regular pictures, but I don't have a digital camera or any money to buy one right now. I wish I knew how to scan my pictures in and email them to DG. Maybe if there's someone out there who knows how to do that, they can tell me how. I'd appreciate it. As I've said, we spent our lives working here so it's very special to us.
LGW-
Scan your pictures using your scanner. If you dont own a scanner you can have them scanned to a disk at Walmart or um- a Photo place.
When you get them on your computer getting them to DG is easy!
Notice when you go to reply to this thread you will see a "Browse" button.
Click that and find your picture in the box that pops up. Hit preview then hit send! It's simple!
I've really enjoyed reading this thread, and looking at the pictures. I'm afraid I'm not as exciting as some of you, and I can't post a pic and this time, as I'm completely clueless about how to work a digital camera...But here goes...
I'm 35 years old, was born and raised in Tx, and am the youngest of 6 (2 brothers and 3 sisters). I graduated from Irving High School in 1986 and began working as a hairstylist (I had taken Cosmetology in High School). I moved to Paris (Tx) in 1989, and continued to do hair until last year. I met my Husband, Dave,at the salon I was working in at the time. He became my favorite client. We married Oct 5, 2002.
I hate to admit this, but I never really enjoyed the beauty business, but I really enjoy working in my home. I'm not very outgoing and I'm never as happy as when I'm cleaning or fixing up my home. Seeing how burned out I was in my profession, my DH let me quit and become a full time homemaker. I love it. Especially since I've started gardening.
My husband and I were both raised in Christian homes. We have no children, but he has a daughter from a previous marriage. She is married with a 2 year old daughter. We also have 2 indoor cats, Abby and Annie, along with the many strays that I feed. I've always loved cats.
I planted my first garden in May. It all started with 2 house plants that were given to us after the loss of my Mom. It has somehow blossomed into a hobby...almost an obsession. It's so funny, because I've never been intersted in plants before. It's like I just got bitten by the gardening bug and it's become my latest hobby. It's almost a form of therapy. I also enjoy needle crafts and crochet. My mom used to quilt, and I'm ashamed to say that I'm her only daughter that doesn't quilt. I also love music, old TV shows, and reading.
I guess I've rambled enough. Have a great day,
Jennifer

Can't believe that women thinks I should slow down. I won't be 70 till Feb.
We are a two person operation with lots of wild life around

Two people, but a boy dog names sue which is a lot of help.
Must include our [guard cat]
Wow Michelle! Great thread idea. And I had no idea you were so young! You never know on here I guess- and that should be taken as a compliment :) I'm just 21 myself, so it's nice to find other college students on here- as most our age aren't exactly occupying their time with plants...
So about me...hm...well I'm a female, my name is Susanne- often I get referred to as "he" on here, which is understandable since my dg name has no gender. hehe, but I'm all girl promise! I go to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Tx. I transferred from University of Oklahoma after my sophomore year, and like it much better here. I'm an art education major, graduating (late) in Spring 05. I like painting and photography best. I mainly container garden, as I live in an apartment. I can't wait till I have my own house and yard.
I'm engaged to a great guy, his name is Kyle. Been with him a little over 2 years and our wedding is in about a year and half. I'm excited, and you're all invited! Seriously, I would love to have Dg friends there:)
That's probably enough for now. I've loved reading about all of you-- it's like when reading a book, I make up my own visual images of people, but learning this much about yall makes it so much more personal.
This is me recently. :) Tell me more tell me more!
Well Michele, here's a little bio on me too.
I am a 56 yr. female. I've been married for 37 yrs. to my high school sweetheart and we have a 2 yr. grandson who is the love of our life right now. My hubby was in the Air Force for 22 yrs. and we have lived all over the USA. We retired here in Calif., which is our original home. I have gardened in many different zones in my life, but gardening out here is the best for me.
I have been lucky to accomplish many things in my life and I'm still trying new things all the time. I have been a beautician, Chef's assistant and a Semi Pro Bowler. One of my favorite things to do, other than garden, is to paint. I'm talking about walls and furniture. I have painted all of my homes, plus my families houses. I have taught myself how to Faux paint and just love to do that, especially on furniture. I also love to work with wood and build things. Most of the tools in our garage are "mine" not my husbands.
I also like to read, cook, camp, fish and sew (not much of that now though) as I spend too much time doing lots of new things. I guess you can tell that I like to keep busy.
Since I am usually behind the camera, I don't have any pictures of just me. This picture was taken last year and it is with "frogrus" Janice when she came up for a visit. I am the redhead.
Donna
Since I saw a sailboat cruise the harbor in S. France 45 years ago, I wanted to go sailing! So 14 years ago I met my DH who has just sailed around the world...told him I wanted to do it, too.
We sold our sailboat in 2000 after sailing Alaska, Central and South America, the South Pacific, NZ and OZ. Just the two of us...it was terrific. All during the trip my DREAM was to grow everything I saw on the trip: to be able to put a broom stick in the ground and a find a tree the next day.
Well, when we decided that there were more adventures out there....we sold the boat and searched for the next adventure: now we are living on 12 acres in E. Hawaii (Hawaii Island). So far off the tourist track....we are really isolated. We have elec. but water is rain catchment...and I can throw cuttings into the woods and find trees in 6 months.
I started growing hoyas and now have a large greenhouse full of them and a business...plus other small collections of gingers, philodendrons, dichorisandras, brugmansias etc. etc. etc..... (yep, I know, they should all be upper case).
We have two CBR/Lab mix sisters (Thelma and Louise), two black cats, Boo and Spooker and endless lizards and ghekos. The birds are to die for...songs wake us up...
Living here is very much like sailing, except the house doesn't move (except in earthquakes!!!). This side of this island is very ethnic...much ethnic diversity...everyone dedicated to growing something... There is no hype, there is a deep reality and life is very simple and basic...involved with growing and nurturing.
I am a Master Gardener, DH (formerly a linear Chemical Engineer) is totally involved growing orchids and palms and we love where we are...and who we are. We are 64 this year and may have to buy a tractor to help us do the rest.
I love DG...it is loving, welcoming, accepting and fun...challenging too.
Y'all come by...y'hear?
That sound so wonderful. I'd love to be isolated. I tend to be a bit afraid of people.
Hi everyone!
I just joined DG and am loving it. I have enjoyed reading this thread very much.
Now a bit about me :-
My name is Terri, I live in England, I'm 56 years old, female.
I don't have an enormous garden, but what I do have is crammed full of plants, especially irises. I love animals and have a Cairn Terrier (Gemma) a cat (Sugar) and a tortoise (Ozzie) as well as the fish (and frogs) in the garden pond.
I have lots of hobbies that include needlecraft (I love cross-stitch), beadcrafts, parchment craft, cookery, computing, birdwatching, plant propagating...and many more. I visited USA for the first time in January (Ohio) and fell in love with both the country, it's people and it's beautiful birds and wildlife. I'll never forget the first time I saw a Red Cardinal and Blue Jay and I even got to feed Chickadees from my hands. Now I can't wait for the opportunity to visit again.
Terri1948
Terry-
We're so glad to have you in DG. Is a wonderful site, and the friendship and knowledge you'll find here is incomperable.
I have really enjoyed this thread-I go to read it every day and find out more about our DG friends.
Welcome everyone!
Aloha, I'm so envious!!!!!! It sounds like a tropical paradise! I've always wanted to live somewhere like that! Or atleast warm year round.
Terri, I hope you come back soon to visit!
CaptMicha.....Go for it......You are young .
Your Life is ahead of You.Follow Your Dreams and do what Your Heart directs !! that's what's all about.
Hawaii is beautiful what I saw in just 2 weeks Years ago ,

I don´t know what to say... I kinda tried to sumarize myself on my member page. I might add that I am commited to my beautiful grilfriend, and that my legs aren´t responding to my commands after 7 hours walking in the woods, on the mountains north of here :^P
But I can at least post a picture here ^.^
*examinating a Tillandsia tenuifolia, growing on a beautiful Acacia seyal*
Well, lets see, I am brand new to this forum....I am 52 years young, am a systems administrator for Decatur Public Library, Decatur, IN, have 2 great daughters and 4 wonderful grandson, 12,8,7,5.....one super SIL and one SIL to be soon....along with my husband Ray(33 years and it just seems like yesterday, really!)we raise dairy goats, boer goats and have 5 llamas for fun.....we show our goats pretty much all over the midwest, so that keeps us busy....I am pretty new to gardening....used to be really good with house plants, then my interests changed and I did not have the time to devote to 63 house plants so I gave them all away....recently, due to a death in family, there has been alot of stress in our lives and gardening just kinda fell in my lap....I love it.....and I really love this forum...
A real porch! I do miss having a porch to sit on in the evenings!
