Bought Two Neat Gardening Books Today

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

The Periodontist that pulled Russ's teeth is across from Hastings, and I had been given a gift card for there for Mother's Day. So....... dropped him off, gave them my cell number and went over to go look. I found two great ones, and the two of them together were under $30.00 (certificate was for $25).

I got:

"Trowel & Error" by Sharon Lovejoy
and
"1,001 Gardening Secrets The Experts Never Tell You" by Gayle K. Wood.

I looked for Carolyn's book but they didn't have it. Might have to order that one over the internet.

Well, after bringing hubby home, I sat out on the lounger and started reading. These are both GREAT books. Full of great ideas, and even "duh's" as I slapped myself on the forehead for throwing something away today that I could have used for drying my herbs this summer (went garbage digging immediately, lol!)

Anyways, if you get a chance to read these, I recommend them. I love good tips and new ideas. It's amazing what people will think of for re-using simple items we throw away!

p.s. we got our cucumber trellis (and cukes planted) today, tomato cages up and lawn mowed before the tooth pulling. Oh yeah, a flat of impatiens planted as well. I wanted to do more, but think since tomorrow will be nice, I'll just stick close by and keep an eye on him for now.

What do you use for your Cukes, trellis wise? Karrie, let me know what works for you, I have not planted my Cukes yet, but, I'm about a week or so away. Thanx, Your Gardening Friend, Danny from Jersey

Dan, I've never used a trellis for cukes, but have just done some reading on it and heard it's a great way to save space so the vine goes up. I am doing pickling cukes, and will use them to make pickles. I made this trellis out of stakes and extra large holed chicken wire. (wove the stakes through the holes, then pounded them in the ground). This is a new way for me as well, but since they say it's a great way to do it, I'm giving it a try, as I don't have space for them to trail every which way they would, as they would without having something to climb up. Here is a pic of it (not very good one, as it's new, and cukes are babes, but it might give you an idea.)

I have a sunflower with morning glory behind it, that I am hoping will add some color to the porch, up above, that also has pots with Nasturstiams that will droop down. If it ends up the picture I've painted in my mind, I will take a pic in July and share it.

"Trowel & Error" is one of my FAVORITE gardening books. My copy is well-thumbed and my MIL just gave it to me for Christmas this past year! Keep it handy for all those great homemade garden recipes. And do post a comment in the Garden Bookworm!! Glad you found it! Brenda
