This giant "volunteer" grew last summer, and although it's certainly not something I planted, I thought it was a rather spectacular plant. Suspect it is a variety of Mullein, but wonder if anyone else can identify it. It grew almost 6 feet tall, and it was a windy day when I took the photo so it's not reproduced well. Leaves are soft velvety pale green and it has a large seed stalk (or two) . Now, in spring it's brown and dead, but still standing!
What is it??
yep verbascum!
or common mullein. It's a biennial, so you will probably have lots of seedlings this year.
Thanks. I never saw one grow like this, just little ones in the fields! Guess I better take it down and watch for offspring and yank them out. It was mighty handsome though!
