Hibiscus cultivars to die for...

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

You can see some of her other liners on Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=25463&item=4320504811&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

She's selling them for $2.50 in bulk on Ebay, and I think we'll be listing them around $1.25-$1.50 to growers and large orders.

We haven't received the final pricing from her though.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

my goodness those are incredible. Do I see a coop coming???????

Buried I am planning to do a coop in the spring for these, and it looks like this would be a great company to deal with!!!!

The pics are awesome!!!!

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Nice people too. They're recovering from the Hurricane, and all of the rooting is being done by Speedling.
www.speedling.com

They have the stock plants, but all of their prop houses were destroyed. They do both stem and tip cuttings, and gave me a chart on recommended uses per variety. they even have a few that are ideal for hanging baskets.

I was going to do one this summer, but time just didn't allow for it. Now that we've met these people, I'm kind of glad I didn't.

If you want, I can get you some more info as it comes in.

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

I love speedlings address on Cockroach Bay Road. I wonder if I should add that to my places to visit list?

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

BT,
Aknapp,
I just thought you both would be interested to know that this was my source for the hibiscuses that I got recently. I got quite a few of those that you listed. I had problems getting through to her but later found out that the problem was not on her end but rather on my end. My computer was automatically putting all of her e-mails in my "Junk" folder. The reason she had not shipped on the date we had set and agreed on was because of the hurricane and all of the destruction it had caused. I didn't know this because I wasn't getting her e-mails due to my e-mail problem. So now I can say that she is awesome. I was very happy with my order. I have to tell you though, I ended up getting way more than originally planned. Looking though the photos you can see why I couldn't help myself. I look forward to SOMEONE doing a co-op. I just hope that she has the others available when you do the co-op Aknapp. Since I already got all that is currently available I just don't know what I would get if you did the co-op and she only offered those that I already have. This lady was recommended to me by Nathalyn on the "where are the tropical hisbiscus people" thread that I started. Thanks BT for confirming their reputation. I hope this turns out to be the source for the future co-op.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

Buried threasure I would love any information you can share with me, I am really wanting to do one in the spring, and I want to look at as many places as possible to find the best deal for all of us I can.

Bugfreak yes I would love any information you can share with me for the same reasons.

Thanks both of you for letting me know about these wonderful places. I had not found either one in doing any searches.

Bug I think if I remember right you were getting liners, I am curious to know how long it takes to grow them out, to get flowers, if you could do a little trackingon that it would be wonder ful information for those of is in not so great climates.

I have a couple people who are concerned that if we get liners in the spring that they will not have enough time to grow to produce flowers during our shorter season here in the greater great lakes area????

Any information from either of you will be greatly appreciated.
Alice

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

Aknapp,
I have read that from liners in 3 months you can expect to have a blooming hybiscus of a decent size. When are the people with concerns suggestion that you get the liners to do the co-op if not in the spring? How long is your growing season? I hope that it works out for you. Good luck with this co-op if you decide to do it. BT can probably offer more info than I since he knows the industry and when their supply is best. I'll keep watching this thread to see how it goes.

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Three months is realistic under "ideal" conditions on many of the varieties, but some will be faster and some will be slower. She's working on the chart showing which is which though, and I expect it shortly. I always hesitate to give specific grow times on here, because one person in South Florida says, "Wow! I have a full plant in 3 months.", while a person in Maine is saying, "Hmm. I don't have much of anything yet." A perfect example of this was during the Adenium co-op I did last year. Plants arrived in October, and I had a bloom in April. Brugie got his at the same time, and got his first bloom a month ago.

Bringing in to Michigan, the biggest concern will be the weather. I don't think you could realistically bring them up there before April, and that's probably pushing it. People in zone 7 and lower, would probably want to concentrate on the faster growing varieties, while zone 8 and up would be fine with all of them.

Did you receive the email I sent this morning from the Bill Moore & Co. contact form? I gave some other details in that.

If you have any questions on it, just let me know.

Chris

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Here's the chart on shich varieties are good for Bush, Standards, Baskets, and Florist. The ones that aren't marked for Florist are going to be fast growers. Some of the others may be as well, but I can't tell from this chart.

BEAUTIFUL pictures! I see they all have shiney leaves which mean they are not hardy hibiscus right? I'm new to hibiscus, I have some seeds that I will plant. I'm in zone 5, please advice me which would be best: Root these now and plant in the ground this fall, or Hold the seeds until spring?

Kathy

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Kathy, do you have tropical or hardy Hibiscus?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I need Hot Ticket. Bought one from Florida, had spider mites/webs when I got it. Had to spray everything, brugs etc. as I had placed plant beside all my plants, when finished with mites, it died. He replaced it for me, that one was not too great(last one he had), it never started to grow.............

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

The seeds I have are all hardy.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

BT yes I got your email and now I am wondering if you got the one I sent you?

Kathy you can start the seeds now and they should be fine with a little extra protection. Or you could also wait and do them by winter sowing method (there is a lot of information of the site about that if you are interested just do a search on winter sowing and it will bring you up several threads where it has been discussed)
Or you can wait until spring to start them.
I did some by winter sowing and they are not as tall as the others but they are all getting buds on them and will have a few flowers each. Next year they will be full size and as large as my others.
I started quite a few things this time of year last year and did not have much luck with any of it surviving the winter here, but it may have been me and not the plants.
I love the winter sowing method, I have enormous success doing that, and it is very easy to do.
If I can help you in any way please feel free to email me.

bug I am adding a photo of one of the passi's that you sent me, I can't believe how much its grown! its got about 10 inches of new growth on it and looks great, the other two are doing fine, but this one is really busy!

BT it sure is nice to have you around. I can't believe all this great info you're giving us. I wish I was your neighbor.

Alice,
The picture of the passion flower put a smile on my face. I'm glad that they are doing good for you. I would encourage you to pinch it at some point soon to encourage bushiness. Some passion flowers as soon as the wood hardens, that part of the vine looses the ability to grow new branching. So for this reason I encourage you to pinch now while it's still green so you get multiple branches off of it as close the base of the plant. Otherwise you'll have a leggy looking plant that you'll never be able to trim back past a certain point. Which one is that? The leaf looks like antioquiensis but the growth habit looks like one of my blue ones. I can't think of which of the blue ones but was it P. 'Blue Bouquet"? Just wondering. Good luck with them all. I think I sent you P. 'Elizabeth'. Is that the one on the lower left corner of the pic? All I can see is the tag. I wish you luck with them.

Fenton, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks Alice, I'll give them some extra mulch protection this winter, thought it would give me a little head start to get them in the ground this fall.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

Bug I will pinch it back tomorrow, because I trust your judgement completely!!! It will kill me but I will do it!!!! I promise!! I really want it to do well, and I am sure you know more about them then I do, I am thrilled with the fact that they are all growing new leaves and looking good. I will look at the tag and see which one it is.

BT No problem I will be patient until you here from them, and yes you do have other things I think might do well with the coop.

I have this hibiscus in my yard, but I don't know the name of it.

Thanks Aknapp.
I think I bought this at HD or Lowes last year. It 's one of those surprise hibiscus (not blooming ), so you don't know what you get until it blooms. I was pleasantly surprised. :O)
Rose318

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

Hi Rose
I bought an orange one at lowes this spring that has been blooming since I bought it! I just did some cuttings on it that I am trying to root. I am absolutely in love with all of the tropicals.
I had no idea how beautiful they were until I caught this thread!!!

Another addiction!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I couldn't wait
I am sooo bad(and desperate)
I went to ebay.......

Instead of bidding I did the buy it now
10 for 24.99.......

Doing a happy dance!
I will finally have a color besides RED next summer

Plain City, OH(Zone 5b)

Well crestedchik, don't feel like the lone stranger. . . .I couldn't wait either. I did the same thing. Now that's two of us doing the happy dance!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL!!!!

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

I will show self control.
I will show self control.
I will show self control.
I will wait for the co-op.

Either way, the ebay buy beat my "sale" last April. But all of these are now in 5 gallon cans and most have bloomed all ready.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

crested and rose! I came so close to getting 10 of those also. I just can't quite figure out what I am going to do with them this winter, or I would have had to have them!!!

I all ready have more stuff to bring in then ever and I am a little overwhelmed by it.

If you have a secret let me in, you know its not to late for me to get in on that buy!

Potemup which ones of those did you get or did you get all of them!!! They are incredible!

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

I got Cupcake, Grosse Tete, Jambalaya, Cameo, Bright Eyes, Ooh La La, Ruffled Beauty, Rum Runner and Gabriel.
This is Bright Eyes, sort of looks like Trois' wife did a water color rendering.

Thumbnail by PotEmUp
Plain City, OH(Zone 5b)

The secret for keeping them over winter? For those old enough to remember - wasn't the trick to see how many people you could get in a volkswagon? Well, in my case it is how many tropicals to get in the greenhouse. I must admit that DH is scratching his head and thinking about where the next greenhouse is going.

Oh, potEmUp I got almost the same ones you got this spring - I didn't get rum runner. They were rooted cuttings - but very healthy - have all grown well and bloomed.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

This is the one I got
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4322541603
There are 11 listed and I had to keep it down to 10 so I eliminated Kiss and tell cause its red
Scroll down and the list and pictures are there

aknapp
They are small so they will fit in the house EASY
they said to put them in a 6"pot....so not a problem to find the room.........

Potemup
Jambalya has been on my wish list
Where did you get it?
don't tell me it was offered on another auction.....

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Crestedchik - I got mine at Wayside, but I think they got them from http://www.dupontnursery.com/ProductCategory.aspx?pcid=%206

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

You guys are a bad influence! I just did the eBay 5 pack and choose from the listings on the 3 different auctions she had posted to make my selections. I hope I chose well. Growing these are new to me.
Gator Pride, Opening Act, Sun Showers, Aztec Sun and Tamibon.

PotEmUp, since we are in the same area, do you leave them outside all winter, like protected next to the house or bring them in? I really have too many things to bring into the house with my new found tropical taste of things and am hoping to leave as much as I can outside, unless we are expecting a real cold snap.

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Calif_Sue I have mine in the ground, except for the new babies I bought this year. I have covered them with landscape cloth on the couple of freeze days and so far have not lost any. I see several around town that are up and over the eaves of the house - most seem to be on the East wall. I think I will string christmas lights on mine this year as an extra insurance. I lost two to gopher and another 2 to planting too deep (rot!) Maybe we can swap cuttings. I am trying to root backup up cuttings of all of my established hibisicus.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Been working on a spreadsheet in Excel, listing all the info on the hibiscus we purchased in the Spring. It shows the cost, shipping, etc ~ whether they came true, when the first bloom was, cultural notes etc. I bought from Dupont-LA, Exotic Hibiscus-FL, and Heavenly Hibiscus - CA. If anyone would like me to email this as an attachment, send me an email at :

arlene@evertek.net

I am waiting on 3 or 4 that have not bloomed yet to complete the spreadsheet so it should be ready to send out to you by mid or the end of October.

Had my carpet cleaned today; hope it will dry good over the week end. Then I will clean up the pots and move them to the South window where they always do well over winter. The last few weeks got so cool here (low of 49) and they did not like it one bit. They will be happy to come indoors. The move may have them pouting a bit but they will adjust.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

I will be looking forward to all of the input that I can get from the ebay purchases, I have been discussing doing a coop with her.
She is very interested, which is why I really wanted to see how they I did with them here through the winter.
I am glad to know I won't have to rely on just my opinion!!!

Plain City, OH(Zone 5b)

Aknapp, I received my 10 from ebay today. They are absolutely lovely. I would have been happy if none were any bigger than the smallest one. They look exactly like the picture on ebay. Healthy, happy little plants - ready to grow! As I sit here now, I wish I had taken a picture of them to post. I was just so anxious to get them planted. They had been removed from their cell and the whole plant and the label (no pot) put in a long tall baggie. A small tree band would have fit in the bag. The shipment fit the box perfectly. The only concern that I have is that they are very fragile. From her to me was great. If I were to have to identify and repack for a second trip I would be a nervous wreck. (But, if you do a co-op - I'M IN! :~) )

TLC, I would be very interested in your spreadsheet. I have an order coming from Dupont next week. The Black Dragon was an absolute must have!

Here is Cupcake after the rains and with the sun on her back. The picture looks more faded than the flower is.
