Hibiscus cultivars to die for...

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I am toying with the idea of a conservatory right off that south slider over looking the lake. We never use that deck because of the wind and it has a nice ceramic tile floor.

It will be a few years but I can't get it our of my mind. A good place to sit in spring and fall when it is a little too cold and windy outdoors and yet you would feel like you are outdoors.

sounds wonderful a "Hibiscus Haven"

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Arlene, I ordered several hibiscus from Strictly Hibiscus and I never got any response from them at all. I also purchased several liners from the Seller on Ebay. They arrived in perfect condition, so I ordered 8 more varieties directly from her. She said they furnish the hibiscus that Strictly Hibiscus sells, and she hadn't heard from them either.

The lady's name is Carol Howard and she is very nice and generous with bonus hibiscus as well. The liners run around $2.50 ea. and the ones I won on Ebay have already grown quite a bit.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I ordered 10 from Carol on EBay so I can compare them to what other people consider to be liners. We'll see how it pans out. Thanks for the info, Syl!

You gals are way ahead of me!

Wow! Lots of color in this thread. I purchased an unnamed hibiscus from a nursery this summer and was just wondering if someone might know the name of this cultivar? I attached a pic of it below.

Canna,
Now that is COLOR! I love this cultivar. Please, someone name it. I would love to know more about it. Someone got the combination just right there. Whoever created that.

TwinLake
Sorry about the delay in posting the picture of my liners. I had some computer problems. Here they are. If you look really closely you might be able to see the two or three that lost their leaves during Ivan when they were in a dark room for a week.

Bug, they sure look healthy! How long have you had them?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Nothing wrong with small plants/liners. Here's Country Music 10-13-04, it was small when it came.

YouSureCanAskForMore - Looks like The Path http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1094039

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Looks nothing like The Path in person. I had The Path and tossed it. Had yellow edge, orange toward center, THEN an ugly shade of rose in center, sure clashed with the orange and yellow.

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

So many of this things are mislabeled by the time we get them, it is hard to identify any. Here is a shot of one "the path" I had for 1 season before the frost took it's toll.

Thumbnail by PotEmUp
Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I bought mine from Logees' Nursey, paid $10.+ postage. Yours' doesn't show rose colored center, which I thought was ugly because the colors just didn't look good together.

Why'd you let the frost get it? It was sooo pretty.

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Hibiscus, the photo is of "Sunshowers" from Logee's. (It really is The Path, as I have another from Monrovia.) They did not do a good job labeling the ones I got and the plants did not do well at all. It may be that you did not get The Path. The center of this one is almost a "day glow" pink.
We only get about 3 days of frost each year and it snuck up on me last year. I do taxes full time from Jan-Apr, so I sometimes am not as attentive as I should be to the weather reports. I think I will hang little christmas tree lights on all my hibiscus this year, so all I have to do is turn on the lights to warm up my charmers.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Here is a picture of Sun Showers. I bought mine at a nursery in Des Moines. Kept it for two years and gave it away. It got to big for me to manage. When I bought it, there were five plants in the same pot. Not a bad deal for $16. Several people were able to enjoy it.

Brugie,
Thanks for this nice photo.

Have you guys noticed how this thread just WON'T DIE? I think that says alot about our passion with these amazine plants.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I just love this thread. Brugie, I don't know how you could give up that beautiful flower; You are so generous, giving away something so beautiful!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Yipes" Just dicovered this thread and I'm sure all information required on Hib r-s is here. Eclipse and indeed all of you how gorgeous are they! Succumbed myself to 2 standards this Spring--Tylene and Maria. Because I've enjoyed my double Rose (will try to ident) standard for over 30 years I thought the investment worth it. Have also started a pale pink standard from a gift plant. they live out on the decks all summer and come into the conservatory for winter where they are blooming their hearts out and will bloom in winter if I supplement the light. New hybrids are absolutely wonderful and how will I resist? I will become an addict even though I've managed to control my brugmansia passion--Oh well-could be worse and a lot more ugly.

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

I think Gabrielle borders on the ugly. Sometimes they just mix too many colors together.

A bit muddied, or just muddled? But then Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, no?

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

PotEm... I love it. More interesting than lots of them.

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Finally Jambalaya gets ready to bloom and what do I get for the 1st time in about 6 months - RAIN. Oh well! The bloom still shows what is to come. Can't wait til next year, maybe we will get a real summer, instead of cool dry weather.

Thumbnail by PotEmUp
Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

That one is a beauty!

We had a cool summer also, very few blooms, now, they are blooming, time to cut them back to bring inside. ggrrrr.....

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

Mine are going nuts right now with blooms too (the two large ones I have). Same as you Hibiscus... Now I've gotta get ready to chop them down. Don't you just hate to do that. I think I might do a hibiscus garden against the side of the house and install a modular mini-hoop to act as a cold frame during the winter and not have to dig them up or move them at all during the 4 months of cold we get here. Heck, I might even run some heating cables along the ground in the soil. Just an idea. We'll see how things turn out.

TwinLakes...
I've had my little ones about 1 and a half months. I'm getting the Hibiscus guide/handbook by the American Hibiscus Society too just to be prepared next spring.

PotEm,
Thanks for sharing your picture. I have that one too and I can't wait to see those blooms on mine too. I've included a picture of one of mine blooming away and still covered in buds.

bug those are gorgeous, but I also want to know what the great folliage is next to it????

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Looks like variegated Alpinia. A type of ginger.

Chris

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

Alice,
Chris is right on it. That's exactly what it is. If you look closer you can see the wind/salt burns from the recent visit from hurricane Ivan. It's also been run into a few times (if you can believe that!). This is right by our mailbox. Someone ran their tires up into our flower bed. It's either the mail lady or the garbage man. For their sake, I hope I don't catch them. I've been hiding in the house behind the shutters on garbage day cause I haven't seen the mail lady do it.

The ginger is a tropical or a semi tropical(isn't it Chris?) but I can send you some in the spring i you want some Aknapp. I would have sent you some in our last trade had I known you might like it. It's really taking off here and filled in quickly OR, you may not be interested in it since you're in zone 5. Either way, just let me know in the Spring if you want some. I'll be happy to send some your way.

Cassopolis, MI(Zone 5a)

I would love some bug, the colors are wonderful!!!
Good luck finding that culprit!!!!

Navarre (NW FL), FL(Zone 8b)

You'll love it Alice. Just send me a little reminder email later when temps warm back up and I'll be happy to SASE it for you.

!!! CO-OP !!!

i will post a co-op in the spring on the tropical hibiscus! you guys let me know when you think the best time will be for you. for me it would be Feb. - Mar..
i have a mid-sized greenhouse and can house some of the plants for those of you in the colder zones.
i am running one right now on the hardy and the tropicals were the next in line but i wanted to wait until spring.
i have contacted several companies and had replies from them but have not gotten a definite on prices. the liners are the way to go. plants are smaller but the cost is less and the plants do just fine growing up :)
plus, with this new found addition i see coming on here the more we can buy at one time the better! right?
i may post this co-op early in spring simply because i know there will be a hugh response on it and i will need as much time as possible to be able to keep it together :))
ok.....
let me know your thoughts and i will start planning this monster LOL

i am looking at about 32 different colors for the co-op. it looks like around $2.50 ea. due to extra shipping charges per box. if this is do-able for everyone please let me know. that way i have some idea as to what i can bargin with....
thanks again

Nadi, unless things have changed, look at the post at 1:47 on Oct. 6th as it looks like aknapp was already planning on doing a co-op. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Siloam Springs, AR

not a problem. i missed that or i would have not said anything. i posted the hardy co-op on the 1st of october and at the same time mentioned i would be doing one on tropicals as well. i started the foot work many moons before that. i will email aknapp and see whats up and if i can help in anyway....

You'll need to ask Donna (SoCal). . . . don't remember the name but it is a favorite of Stellapathic's. It's like the Bloomingdales of the plant world.

Oh, I am still having withdrawals from going there! Good thing I don't remember how to get there! LOL

Glad you enjoy the picture; when I get it settled in the landscape will take an "in situ" pic for you; probably in a few months.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I can't believe all the gorgeous hibiscus. Luv the powderpuff!
:) Donna

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I love it!! Very different. :-)

Fremont, CA(Zone 9a)

Powder Puff is great. I have one as a standard and it is a heavy producer.
