The liner farm has a great selection of hibiscus, but they are so unreliable. I've had an order with them for over a year and they ship it in bits and pieces plus their quantities are so high, usually a hundred or more of each variety.
Hibiscus cultivars to die for...
The liner farm, both grows and brokers, which is part of the problem. He grows the woody ornamentals he sells, but I'm pretty sure he brings in the Hibiscus from somewhere else. He's a supplier for our main company, and we use him for the stuff he grows personally, but not the others.
Chris
This is awesome info and the best part about it is that it comes from people who know. People who have experience buying these. When you guys refer to the liner farm are you referring to Dupont? Just wondering.
Cala
They ship in bits and pieces??? That could be really annoying. How about if they charge you as THEY go. That would seem more reasonable than asking you to pay all up front (if they require upfront payment). I love it when I can pay, receive and I'm done. BTW, Thank you so much for the extra you included in the trade. I lauged of joy as I opened the package. I love sugar cane. How did you know? Did you get yours yet?
BT
I did get the feeling that he grows and brokers. Something about the way the website is layed out. I think it was the "contact us for more info" bit. Implying that they don't really know what they can help you with at the moment as demand and supplies can change with their brokering at any given moment.
No. there's an actual nursery in St. Cloud, FL named "The Liner Farm"
I grew up in this industry, and know the young plant growers in Florida especially well. We currently have about 100 plant sources, offering over 35,000 plant items, so chances are good I can point someone in a direction when they're looking for plants for co-ops. The exception would be zone 7 and lower type material.
BugFreak, they don't make you pay ahead of time. They do call when the order is ready to ship and get CC info, or will ship COD. I would be really mad if I'd paid for those plants last year and still didn't have them!
I wanted to send you more than promised, and knew you had everything already, but then I saw that the canes were rooted and was hoping you would like it(and didn't already have one). I'm at work, so don't know if mine has come yet or not. It's pouring rain here at the office, but watch it not rain a drop at my house! The postal lady knows to tuck any boxes under the palm tree at the edge of the garage so the plants will be fine.
Lucky you. I have full sun in front of my house so I have to be ready to take it from the delivery person's hand or risk loosing them completely. I love the sugar cane. I have one but not the purple. I was looking high and low not too long ago for sugar cane and now I have two varieties. You rooted it? I've gotta learn how you did that.
BT;
Experienced indeed. I love that we have people like you here to show us around. We're going to have to pick your brain a bit more and see what else we can find out.
BF the sugar cane can be cut into 12-18 inch pieces, each must have three or more joints(those circle thingies around the cane, the sections). Dig a trench and bury the piece of cane about 3-4 inches deep and keep moist but not soggy. Little plants will grow from the dormant nodes at the joints on the cane. Baby plants can also be started by removing the sprouts that grow from the cane joints. I wait till it has a nice clump of air roots, then break or cut free from the main stalk and stick in damp potting soil and keep in the shade till roots form.
I see Cala. Sort of like doing log cuttings for brugs. That's neat. I sure do want to propagate this one. My nephew (10 yrs. old) would love some of this. He's into tropical fruits and edibles. He mentioned to me that he was looking for some sugar cane. I can't wait to be able to send him some. I have some of the regular (non-purple) that I might be able to send him. He lives in Texas.
I keep meaning to beg a farmer friend of mine for a piece of the green. It gets huge down here. Your nephew will love it. The stems contain the sugar and the content is highest when the plant flowers.
That's good to know. How long from now do you think I'll be able to do cuttings? Just wondering.
Mine was pretty small when I planted it in January and it's had canes big enough to cut for a couple of months. Just remember, don't let it get frosted on, sugar cane does not like temps below freezing.
The purple cane that my Dad used to plant was called Blue Ribbon Cane. He planted the whole stalk end to end down the row. It will make a new stalk at each joint. When it was mature we would strip the leaves off and cut it off at the ground. These stalks were taken to my uncle`s house to make syrup. He had a horse hooked up to the press which was fed by hand. When the stalks were put into the press the horse would walk around and around making the press force all of the juice out of the stalks. It was then caught in a long vat and heated with a wood fire to cook the juice down. Once it was thick it was put into cans and used throughout the winter until it was time to make it again the next year. My Dad said that the clear "rock candy" that comes from opening a lid on a can of syrup, was the only candy they got as a child.
Susie,
the sugar cane cuttings you sent me are sprouting!!!!!!
It looks likee purple grass...sooooo pretty!
I buy sugar cane stems at local Thai markets and cut them up and plant on their sides with the nodes or eyes on the sides at the surface..with bottom heat they root quick and grow fast...I have the green kind with dark colored stems.I want the green and white striped one and Pele's smoke..the purple kind. :-)
THERE he is. Eclipse, We (well, I) kind of took over your thread for a while. Sorry. Glad to see you back.
I hadn't realized there were so many different types of sugar cane. I hadn't thought of rooting something from the Thai markets like this. Neat idea. I love the purple one. Maybe cala has another she can spare for you Eclipse. I don't know if it's 'Pele's Smoke" but it sure is purple. If not I'll do cuttings later and you're welcome to any that I have then.
Whatever its name is it sure is pretty. Hope someone can help with the ID of it for you.
You probably don't want to keep a no-name hibiscus Arlene, so out of the goodness of my heart I would take it off your hands!!!!haha
Arlene ,
it looks like Mystic Pink. :-)
I found a nursery today that is getting in cool plants in September. He's even ordered me an AeAe banana. I'll see if he can find the variegated sugar cane. Kyle, I can send you a little plant like I sent Bugfreak, or I can send you a section of cane, which ever you prefer.
Karyn, glad yours are growing. I was wondered how they would travel.
Bugfreak, your vines arrived, they are so nice and healthy! I've got them hidden from the gulf frit cats!
Thanks, kyle
Will see what Dupont has to say.
a
I just did a BIG no no. I ordered 33 named tropical hibiscus. These are liners and I should be getting them sometime next week. I'm excited and nervouse at the same time. What will I do come winter? I don't even want to think about it. IT"S YOUR FAULT! All of you. lol
Cala,
I'm glad to hear they made it there in good condition. Please do let me know if you have any trouble with any of them. Not that you should. These little buggers should take right off for you. I hope you enjoy them.

Oh no, another DG'er takes the plunge! This thread is BAD! This spring I ordered 9 plants (rooted cuttings) all because of drooling over this thread! The hardest part is looking at the beautiful green foilage and waiting and waiting and waiting for those little cuttiings to grow and bloom. AFTER waiting I can say it is worth the wait. The first one to bloom was Grosse Tete.
Rosie I have to agree that was worth the wait, she is a beauty!
I can see I'm in big trouble. First y'all tempt me with bananas, then it's cannas and now hibiscus. I guess the grass in the lower yard has to go too!
goodthinking cala! I am thinking the front yard here has far too much grass!!!!
It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to dig the grass out(after spending a fortune to get it going in the first place). Of course there is the little area where the crab grass has taken over. I could put down crabgrass killer and it would be ready to plant come September when the nurseries here start stocking up again! I keep telling myself I don't need more plants but it's not working!
Oh, Rosie! that is a keeper for sure! We drag mine in to a south window and they
are happy as clams as long as I be sure to water them. And of course, preventative
for any pests is a must. It is wonderful to have a tropical hibiscus bloom when there
is tons of snow just on the other side of the window.
You guys are killin me!!!!! I keep telling myself I am not going to come back to this thread and yet here I am again!!!!!
Arlene that one is fantastic!
rylaff is that as huge as it looks????? Besides being just plain gorgeous!!!!
eclipse, I absolutely ADORE morning glory. I bought one similar to Morning Glory this spring from Logees, edna boegert. I see 2-3 buds, but no "color" action just yet.
Brugie, I saw that when you posted it but I thought it was a new brug! Shows how much attention I pay to things! It's beautiful.
Thanks Susie. Those sex organs in this one don't look a lot like those of brugs, do they? LOL! I can see when looking at it without enlarging the picture that it could be mistaken for a brug bloom, especially the way I'm holding it.
Brugie, I didn't enlarge the picture. I was at home and we still have dial-up(trying to get DSL to come into the s/d) I meant to come back and check it out when I got to work, but then I got busy and forgot. I'm gonna have to start paying more attention!
Love that Erica Nichole ~ especially the ruffled edges ~ looks just lovely.
Twin,
I would just do a little visit to your local book store. You should be able to find out what's on the cover of that book during that visit. Humm... That looks like a good book for a beginer to buy.. Uh Oh!. Here we go again. I'll have to look into this book. I can't wait to be able to trade with people fot others. (As if 33 of them weren't enough already.)
Thanks Arlene.
Bugfreak, where did you order the liners? I've tried to read everything here, but may have missed it.
Twinlakes - yours looks like yours could be Cajun Swirl http://www.dupontnursery.com/CGI-BIN/data/cc_product/images/17.jpg
I bought a bunch via Wayside
This one is labeled Rum Runner, but it doesn't look like any that were in the Wayside ad. On the DuPont site there is Evangeline, which seems like a match. I am very happy with the set I got from Wayside.
Thank you, P
Believe you made the ID. I am off to mark it down.
