'liners' are not usually much more than rooted cuttings. They are plants in dirt/medium, but they are tineeeee.
Hibiscus cultivars to die for...
Liners on Hibiscus are typically done in 36 to 72 cell trays. Each cell has 1 rooted cutting, with a cell size of 1.5" ot 2.5" depending on the tray. The cuttings themselves will be 3-6", again depending on the tray size, age, etc.
I guess they can be tough in some areas, but I've planted them directly in the ground, and usually only lose about 10%
I have some that are 3 years old that were started directly in the ground. They get cut back to the ground in January or so, and are hitting the eaves again by August.
Ideally, they should be started in a 6-8" pot and bumped up from there.

Thanks BT. I was curious about this cause I would see it often at some sites selling hibiscus. I appreciate your explaination.
No Problem. They're most commonly found on the wholesale side, and aren't seen much for retail. Growers that sell to the big chains typically buy their plants as plugs and liners, instead of starting them themselves. 36 is about the biggest, and annuals are often done in 512 cell trays. Those buggers are tiny.
The 512 plug trays are a stinker to plant unless you have a machine too. LOL! That is how our local greenhouse gets their impatiens in.
They sure are Brugie. About the only ones that buy them from us are the large commercial growers that supply the chains. Most of them use machines.
One of the neater ones is located on the west coast of Florida. They're automation system to transfer plugs and pots through the nursery is water based. Everything is floated on styrofoam trays through water troughs. Pretty cool to see.

Eclipse, "Rowennas Wedding" is beautiful............ I love those unique looking flowers. I have got to quit looking at these posts. Will be falling off the no more plants wagon. LOL.
LOL@barb..I'm going to try to root some cuttings of it.
Kyle: I have asked before, will you trade with me?
hibiscus when I get some cuttings rooted later on.....I already have the pink one you have..it's called candy wind.
:-)
I wanna know which one of you lucky people is going to plan the co-op....hhhmmmmmmm??????
LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL
Hibiscus, I searched Google and Froogle, trying to find 'Full Moon' and 'Country Music' and found only one source for each. May I ask if you got yours locally, or ordered online? They both are gorgeous!
Jean
I put in a request to Dave to host one for Duponts.
He's backed up a bit, and there's the issue of me being in the hort industry, but we're working on it to see if we can do it.
I suggested a late June/early July delivery, as Buried Treasures is pretty much done shipping by then, and will be able to take that on.
We'll see how it goes.
Chris
LOL BT...I think I found 28 that I 'have to have'!!! (Not really, DH would kill me if he has to lug another pot around) Waiting with anticipation!
Brinda :)
LaSweetP
I got these from traders, I can start some for trade. PLMK
Gloria
Oh Gloria! If I could possibly get a cutting of the 'Country Music' and 'Full Moon,' they would be most-cherished passalongs for my garden. Thank you!!!
I have 'Jane Cowl' (pictured above) and 'Brilliant' (red) and another (unidentified - lost the tag). I will check to see what else is out in the garden that might be suitable for trade. (I'll check your trade list also). Again, Thanks!
Jean
Email me privately, I have no trade list.

Waysidegardens.com is having a sale on a few of them. 4" pot and most are $6.95. I've never ordered hibiscus from them, but I might try a few. The discount code is Q1CH2B.
Oh, Brinda!
You bad girl! You know I gotta go look!
LOL Arlene.....I knew you would! Looks like a decent price if they are nice plants! Let me know what you do! I'm thinking of browsing tonight to see how much money I can spend! Shhhhh....don't tell DH....he's over-run here with Brugs and Caladium bulbs in the kitchen! LOL
I am having trouble making their website work!
Kyle, lovely Hibiscuses. I have some seeds that you sent me last year, will try them here in the warmer climate of turkey and see how they do.
:-) I hope they grow alright.
Charla,
There is a Schizopetalus for sale on Ebay right now. Here is the link if you are interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=25463&item=2392643201 I've gotten plants from this seller and can tell you you'll get beautiful and healthy plants as described.
Gemila
Hibiscus, If you can root an extra cutting of Full Moon, I would like to trade for it.LMK
Full Moon is a very slow grower, also hard to start, but I am trying. Will let you know if I am successful, Mary.
Got that one from Glory in Biloxi, so I will cherish it.
Yes, I understand that. It does make it very special.
When someone does decide to host this co-op let me know. I need another plant like I need a hole in the head but at $2 a pop i'll buy more than my share.
Same here, I REALLY need more hibiscus..........like a hole in my head, but I do love them.
So I wonder if BT will be able to work out the kinks and be able to do the co-op with Dupont after all. I've been hoping since this thread was started..
I'm afraid it's not going to happen this year, for me. A lot of recent unexpected changes in life, have me now playing a dual role in both the family and business. The company is usually wound down by now, but necessity has forced me to keep the selling season open as long as possible.
Once I get the routine down to organized chaos, I'll be able to look into it again.
Chris
After looking at all of the tropical hibiscus photos and drooling, if anybody can point me to some sites to start researching I would do one in the spring, if we can find someplace with reasonable prices that will work with us.
I noticed some links above but would appreciate any others you may know about. It will give me several months to do inquiries and get as much info about companies as possible.
Here's one that may work.
http://www.robrick.com/plants/plant_list.asp#H
I don't think they'll sell direct, but I can work something out with them if you go that route.
I buy from Robrick, they have nice plants.
Yeah. They're a good company, and have a nice selection of some regular Hibiscus. I was going to recommend Hatchet Creek as well, but their Hibiscus selection is much less.
