Sometimes it does pay to bit.., er, complain after all (~:

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

me don't trus nok spele cheeker,,,,,,,,,they always tell me my name isn't spelled right. Not underlined, shows up in Red Type, and no way to fix.

"eyes"

You have to fix it in the box below - it doesn't fix it for you. Even the web has limitations. :)

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I noticed that! Mine finally started working, and I noticed when I typed the word "flourescent", it was red. I went to the box and tried over and over to fix it and no matter what I changed it came out wrong. But I realized that everyone would know what word I was trying to spell, so I left it "wrong", laughed and decided "Oh Well - me a dumb bell today"!!!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

That word gets me, too! Florescent -- there's no U. I always misspell it!

Cambria, CA(Zone 10a)

Actually, there are two words: 1) Florescent - Flo*res"cent, a. [L. florescens, p. pr. of florescere begin to blossom, incho. fr. florere to blossom, fr. flos, floris, flower. See {Flower}.]
Expanding into flowers; blossoming.

and 2) Fluorescent - brilliantly colored and apparently giving off light; "fluorescent colors." -or- Having the ability to emit light of a certain wavelength when activated by light of another wavelength.

Just to confuse the issue. And the spell check accepted both BTW.

Ah! See, I had it flourescent -- not fluorescent -- so the spellchecker said it was wrong. I removed the U and it was right...Sort of...In a homonymous sort of way, anyway!

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

i ddn't get to practice it yet. dave, you're the bessst!! how neat. a mind that can grasp computer programming and gardening just amazes me.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

inywy I wil try spel checker to. Donna Didn't work for me.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

You know where this would be really helpful?

It would be GREAT to have spell-checker within the comment boxes, especially within the PDB (and even within the GWD and GWB....) since you have to preview them first anyway ;o)

Good idea, Terry. I added it into the "Add a comment" area of the Watchdog, Bookworm, and PDB. If you think of anywhere else where you'd like it, let me know. :)

dave

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

....and speedy service, to boot! Thanks!!! (Now I can only hope that folks will use it. Then again, what WOULD I do with all that free time if I weren't editing misspelled words????)

Cambria, CA(Zone 10a)

This is such a cool thing to have, and I thank you for the thoughtfulness Dave.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I usually don't delight in other peoples errors. But this one made me laugh. I have always been a fairly good speller, but that one flower, "nasturstiam" gets me every time. I was surfing for help on window boxes tonight, and came across this site. Down towards the bottom of the page, they were giving suggestion for types of plants to use. I thought I had killed the word pretty bad. You have to go see this one.

I just previewed this page - I spelled it right the first time, for the first time ever. lol!

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Karrie it is not spelled right.
nasturtium... You have nasturstiam. I wonder if both ways are correct or if the spell checker here missed it. I have noticed the last few days several words I'm sure were wrong but it missed them.
BUT I had to take it to google to get the correct spelling so don't feel bad :)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I think when you put quotes around words, the spell-checker skips 'em. Nasturtium isn't as much of a spelling issue for me, as the botanical name: I always manage to mangle Tropaeolum - when I write it AND when I say it....sigh.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

yep - I'll bet those quotes did make a difference! I'll never get that one spelled right!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Is the spellchecker still activated? I'm using Firefox still and don't see anything underlined when I preview, even if I purposely misspell words.

biulding -- nope.
freind -- nope.

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

GW I haven't seen anything maked in several days.. that's why I came here to see if there was a reason.

Cambria, CA(Zone 10a)

Hmmm, here I thought I was just being a perfect speller for once. I'll have to watch it a little more closely.

I had to temporarily disable it for a while. I hope to get it back soon.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

I just now saw Dave's post. I'm a pretty good speller (my typing may have something to be dessired), my dh uses me as spell check. (When I ask him he says "you're asking me!?)

So last night I posted using the word irridescent, or was it irredescent? Tried to look it up in the dictionary, couldn't find it (or maybe I just couldn't see it) Always wanted to know as a kid, "how ya gonna look up the spelling of a word in the dictionary if ya don't know how to spell it?" LOL

Google is a help too...it is there.
Also don't forget the Email spell checker

I'm always typing words into the Google toolbar to check them! I love that polite, "Did you mean: iridescent?" Yes, indeed, I sure did.
