Why isn't there a.......

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Weekly garden show on the free networks, abc, cbs, nbc, and fox.
I don't know about the rest of you but these realality tv shows have got to go!!!
Gardening is about the biggest pastime hobby in the world.
Hgtv knows it,it even has the rose parade non stop without commericals.Theres and endless amount of topics,Botanical gardens to visit.
They have fishing shows, hunting shows,we need some gardening shows!!!
Oh what I'd give for a gardening show!!!!
If you agree with me,lets here your amen!!!

Saucier, MS(Zone 8b)

Don,

BBC America has a few good garden shows. But like every
other station they have more
re-runs than anything. Even if
NBC, CBS or ABC had them they
would put them at some weird time.

I don't know about you but as
far as the "Reality Shows", I have enough "Reality" in my life
without watching TV. It would be nice to sit down & relax with
some nice Garden Shows.

Honeybee

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Rebecca's Garden used to be on Channel 6 at 6 AM on Sunday mornings, but I don't get up that early anymore on the Sunday and I think she signed on with the HGTV network.

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

I have satalite and don't even get the network stations. Most of my tv time is spent on BBC, HGTV, and USA. A little on Animal Planet and Discovery. I wish to be able to say, "what is a reality show?" but I do know what it is. I can say that I have never seen one!

;~D

LimeyLisa Kay

Rebecca's Garden is still on Saturday mornings - EARLY!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Limey Lisa, I with you I know what the Reality???? shows are but have never watched one. Actually it's not easy to find a good garden show on HGTV anymore. I too wish we had some good garden shows instead of some of the junk on TV. Donna

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

I just got TIVO as a gift!!! Every night I have at least 4 different gardening shows waiting for me. A couple of them are shows I didn't know existed! BBC has some fun ones. Finding my old and favorite show 'Gardeners Journal' with Kathy Renwald was so nice. Who knew it came on at 3:30 in the morning on HGTV? TIVO is totally worth it in my opinion. I had really started to quit watching TV before we received the TIVO.

And the reality shows are ummm, some are better than others I guess. I think Average Joe Hawaii is just brutal, IF it's even real. The Bachelorette is (yawn) boring. I think Todd TV has promise, and I just love House of Dreams. That is reality TV!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I don't get the bbc stations, almost all of hgtv are reruns. They show the new shows during the summer when I'm outside in the garden, instead of showing them in the winter, when I can't get out in the garden!!!
Pbs sometimes shows the new victory garden,I really like the old victory garden, when Peter would travel around to different countries showing the gardens of the world,Even Roger swain, always was up to something that kept me interested.I watched a show a few weeks back where they were
hunting orchids in Papa New Guinea,I heard it was an old show, but I never saw it before, and it was very interesting.
Wish they would film some plant searchers looking for plants used for medicinal purposes, from the Amazon jungle.
Wouldn't that be interesting!!!

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh, it sure would be Tropicman!

I also miss Roger Swain and the old Victory Garden. Roger was soooo into his vegetable garden (like me.. :-D ) , And Chef Maryanne would always make something so easy and good. The new Victory Garden is okay. I just miss Roger and Maryanne!

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

My favorite was the one with Eliot Coleman and Barbara Damerosh (?) or some similiar name. They had some good info and I enjoyed the style of the presentations. Maybe if we started writing to the networks they could come up with more good stuff. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do so it must be a matter of priorities.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh yeah! Mary, that show was called 'Gardening Naturally'. I really enjoyed that one too! I love Eliot's book, 4 season harvest, so chuck full of info.

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Eliot and Barbara are divorced now. So I don't think there will be another gardening show from them together. I did like their show. Too bad they aren't together.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh......how sad to hear they are now divorced.....they seemed like the PERFECT couple! I just saw them on Martha not too long ago too.....................

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Never mind...

too crazy to post...and you'd never believe me!

Hey Horseshoe, thats really incredible as I picture your picture in my mind!!!
Gardening has been growing 2 fold each year,in fact the walmarts the lowes the home depots have been shutting down local nurseies here, because they can't meet the prices of the local stores.I'm just wondering really how much these giant stores depend on the gardening to keep there local business open. This proves that around the world gardening is becoming Americas pastime, even younger people are getting
into it as well.I think the networks should see this and realize this is the wave of the future and try to get in on the ground floor.
I got a great idea!Get The root doctor and you and me fly to the amazon, get out the video camera and get the root swinging from the tree tops looking for undiscovered orchids and bromilaids!!!LOL!What a show!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

HAH!...You're as crazy as us! (Can't believe you read that before I bleeped it! You're fast!)

The gardening world has been growing. I believe it's the number one past time in USA.

I try not to cater to the Big Box stores for most things (but don't get me wrong, I'll still support them, but will support our local places first and foremost, and even pay their "higher" prices, which really aren't THAT much higher.)

As for the networks...I think they get more moola from big corporate type stores than they could get from Mom and Pop stores so they will meet their needs long before they will work with Mom and Pop.

A shame eh? Oh well, one day we can start our own tv shows (I hope!) just like we can now have our own web sites! (Wouldn't that be nice? Hmmm...or would it?)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I don't know about you but when I'm surfing the tv channels and see a glimpse of a jungle, rainforest or anything in that nature I watch it ,just to see what plants I can identify,,its like at that momment I need a plant fix when I see them on tv!!!LOL!Yep thats scary!!!

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I think we need to write the networks like somebody else said. Maybe it would make a difference. My pet peeves about them are: 1. most of them are landscaping shows, which are okay, but I would like more established gardens and identification of plants (seems like lately they've taken most of these off); 2. they come on when I want to be outside working, especially the better ones; 3. they all come on in 2 hour spans (I can't usually sit down for 2 hours in the morning and again for 2 hours in the afternoon) two days in a row. Spread them out!

We do get Rebecca's garden on NBC 8:30 central time on Saturday mornings.

Gardeners unite!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Gingerlily,I agree with you toomany landscape shows and not enough of the mature garden scenes,I enjoy watching jeff corwin from the animal station just to see the tropical jungles they show when examining the wildlfife from the region they are at.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

So, we want more gardening shows in prime time and we want them to be informative, show more mature gardens and we want them to show us gardens across the nation and around the world..... I suggest it be hosted by Dave's Garden and the primary spokespersons be Horseshoe for that interesting humor and down to earth approach and Terry for the no nonsense, get organized but still have fun cohostess. And Dave can be the genious that figures out how to make it work without annoying advertisements..... if ya gotta dream.... dream BIG!

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Oh, yes, Zaney!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Hmmmm...maybe that is the "surprise" Dave and Terry are working on!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Gosh Horseshoe, I hope I didn't ruin the suprise! I just thought of what the first episode could be. You can explain the importance of aeration to a lawn (Standing barefoot and wiggling your tootsies in the grass of course) while Terry walks the area in spiked heels to aerate the lawn.

I figure that the touught of it might get her to spill the beans on the new projects :~)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, spike heels might help me gain admission to the "over-five-foot-tall" group, but the last time I wore them, I was a whole lot younger and more agile than I am now. (And I sure wouldn't have "ruined" the heels by traipsing around in the grass with 'em!)

no-nonsense, eh? You been talkin' to my kids, Zany? Hmmm???? hehehehe....

Now, about the project that's "under wraps" - Dave gave you pretty much the broad-brush of what it is, and I have to say I think (hope) y'all will like it. So far, we have 600+ (and growing) gardening books listed for you to browse, review, etc. The format is terrific (thanks to Dave's programming), and the name is pretty snazzy, if I say so myself, lolol.

Just a few more days, and it'll be ready for prime time. In the meantime, let's see if anybody can guess the name - trust me, it'll be obvious when you see it :)

I'll be back later today to see who's getting warm(er)...

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

BooksRUs? Naww...too simple and boring.

"Words on Plant Matter(s)"!? (Get it? Paper is made from trees/plants?) :>)

Hmmm...maybe it's gotta be "Library Watchdog"!!

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

It must be "Dave's Book Garden" or "Dave's Garden of Books".

I don't even know what ya'll are talking about. I'll look around and see if I can find what you're talking about. Under Dave's Garden maybe?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Hmmm, Browse and review... now you really have me curious ! Does that mean we can browse the titles and review the ones we ar familiar with or will there be a synopsis of the book for us to peruse?

Will there be links to book sources to help us locate and purchase the books we want?

Will it include out of print books ?

And what is the other suprise Dave eluded to? (you can tell us...we won't rat you out :~)

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

So far, y'all are pretty far away from the name, so here's a hint: when it turns, it's bad. (and it has nothing to do with meat or wine, lolol.)

Zany: yes, yes, yes, yes, and not yet, but it can (just haven't really started on out-of-print stuff yet.)

Other surprise? Why, what other surprise could you be referring to? (drawling and batting my eyes to look as innocent as possible...)

Irving (Dallas area), TX(Zone 8a)

Could the name be something like "Garden Book Worm"?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

hmmmm...Paul, you could be on to something ;o)

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Something to do with "rank"?

County Roscommon, Ireland(Zone 8a)

How about the wormery? or the worm corner.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Worm-i-posting! (vs. vermiposting!)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

"As the Worm Turns"

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Hah! Luv that one, Dea!!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

tsk tsk tsk...warmer then colder again ;o)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

but more amusing!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Cold than warm you say! Hmm,Daves four seasons of young and restless gardners!!!!
600 plus books, sounds wonderful,I read everything I can find at the local library,to pass the cold winter monthsOr Daves gonna take a camera crew and visit everyones garden who are members of Daves Garden,Hmm,that would be 78,744 episodes of Daves Garden Tours!!!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I've been lurking on all of these puzzling threads and hoping for some good clues. The book site sounds wonderful...I've got several that I've bought with great expectations and all they are worth are the compost heap....hmmmm...has that got something to do with the name?

As for the gardening TV shows, so many of them have no depth. They give you a general overview but no 'meat'. Producers seem to think everyone is a newbie to the passion and don't know the difference between a hosta and a honeysuckle. I've about quit watching them as it seems they package the same info in a different way each week. Granted, they have their place, but I'm hungry for real information that I can use.

And those landscaping shows are dreadful...you seen one , you've seen 'em all.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Melody... I agree about the landscaping shows, LOL. If I see that guy draw any more curves with his shovel tip, I think I may throw up on the tv set.... never mind his trick of stepping on the shovel to flip the handle up into his hand.

I have seen a few really good shows, though, with some depth. Not enough, certainly. Most of them aim at the level of gardening where I was when I first joined DG, which is probably where the main audience level is in this country.

They say gardening has become the number one hobby now, which is bringing gardening into the mainstream.
