Think this will stink?

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Oooooh. That one had to be rough to take.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

The pollen must be the the white part? Looks like the anthers are the section underneath the white?? ... I dunno? I've never grown those stinky beasties. I didn't think you'd really try it ;)

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

Here is some information about its close relative:

Pretty sure the upper white flowers are the male ones and the lower ones are female.

By the way, as far as I can tell, yours is 'Amorphophallus konjac'.

Edited add another link.

It does look like Konjac!I have been surfing some info.

The main substance in konjac is called Glucomannan which has a low caloric content but is rich in dietary fiber. Clinical study indicates the Glucomannan may be responsible for weight reduction and reducing cholesterol in those who have high cholesterol. It is eaten in Japan to clean the digestive tract of toxins

San Francisco, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh, that's interesting.

You used to be able to buy those little sweet jelly treats made from the stuff.

I think they are no longer sold in the US because of the choking hazard to children.

I really liked the litchi ones.

Didn't know I was eating Voodoo Lily!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Boy, I need some of that stuff if it will help me lose weight and lower cholesterol both. Sure doesn't sound very good though.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Shirley,it probably tastes like chicken!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You try it and let me know for sure.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Whoa root, smelled that thing all the way down here in Wichita,!!!LOL!She's a beauty!!!Time for one of those plug in glades for sure tonite!!LOL

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Tman,I have all of mommas candles going,do yours smell like this outside?

Shirley,Monica says if it will help lose weight, she will eat it!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

She doesn't need it as much as I do. Think we would both be smart to stand back and just look while holding a clothespin over our noses.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh my gosh Root ... that is something else. So just how close do you have to be to smell it?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kansas and Iowa!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hey root,it smells like rotting meat.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Deb,it is in the basement now, without the candles going upstairs, you would be able to smell it up here.
Yep Tman,rotting meat!

Selma, IA(Zone 5a)

Wow!! Thats not your ordinary vodo lily !!!
Linda

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL!No it is not,and I do love this bloom!
I have come to the determination, there is NO WAY, you could have more than one of these open in the house!!!

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Hope, this one only cost postage,I traded here at Daves'.
I know she is busy milking cows right now, even though it is her birthday,(cow can't wait)
I will ask if she can get you all some more, but remember, you have been warned,PU!!!!!!!!

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Root,

Please pass my name on too, and tell her I'll trade anything in my inventory or what I have coming in. I've wanted one of these buggers forever.

This could be a great tool for dealing with my teenagers.

"Want to talk to me like that?".

"Cool. The Voodoo sleeps in your room tonight."

Chris

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Bob, I'm to tired to look back through, but this isn't the same thing as the 100 dollar bulb, is it?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Gosh Chris, there ain't no room,it does the whole house!!!!
I will steer her to this thread,I hope she can do this for you folks.
Seriously.I looked for this one a long time, and it is worth the smell,I kid!it is something I just had to see, and, somehow,I will deal with next year!LOL!!!!

And Geeze Chris with your stash,I may have to make you a trade!!LOL!

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

I will check my bulb stash tomorrow and see what I have that I could spare. I might have to go to the lady that I bought these from and ask her if she has any more for sale. Check back here in a day and see what I ahve come up with. (of my own, that is) I can tell you this, if I do have any, they wouldn't be blooming size, they'd still be smaller bulbs. Can't trade all my good ones away so i don't have any! :>)

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Anna,

Half the fun is suffering through a few years of it's growth, to finally be rewarded by that flower and it's awfull smell.

I'm well aware what I'm in store for. I've been on the commercial side of plants since I could walk, and very few get me excited. This is one of them.

I have a teenager to trade, if my stock won't work.

Chris

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

As long as they survive... (I haven't checked them since fall) I'll have some small ones (6-8 I think) of amorphophallus 'konjac' available. Konjac produces LOTS of babies.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Hey Root this has been a great thread. It is a fabulous bloom, but don't think I could stand to have it around. Glad you were brave?? enough to take the photo. Donna

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

oh i hope so hope i have something will trade for.. i want it to smell to get my hus.. he is lot bigger me so this is one way to get him, he hates my plants, flowers..though he will carry the bag of potting soil out of van for me.. i can just see his face i'm actually laughing to myself.. it would be hilarious plus wanted one two many as can for long time!!!!! sadistic no.. i figure when he is drunk be such a good time too!!!be so funny . but i think they are so awesome looking .. love weird.....

(Zone 5a)

Root how long have you had this one? I just bought a voodoo lily last spring and it did put up a stem but that was all it did.
Right now the bulb is dormant, I don't have the space to give it the light it needs. I know yours stinks but is sure is pruddy.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I got this one a year ago, from AnnaZ,it was huge when I got it,it did not bloom last year, but had great foliage.
It is done stinking and is dying back now, thank goodness.
Mine was in darkness when it sarted blooming.

(Zone 5a)

The bulb I bought was small but I am hoping that this year I will get a bloom as pretty and stinky as yours lol, but mine will be outside.

I also bought a drac bulb last spring but found out that it takes three years to bloom. It is also another stinker but the beauty of the flower is well worth the stink, and just maybe it will keep some of stray kitties out of my garden.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9b)

i really need to get one or two of these..
they're so beautiful, and i've got a perfect spot in almost full shade picked out for them..
lol..in the back of the yard near where i'm putting the dutchman's pipe vine
i figure i'll group all the stinky plants together.. lol
:)

I just saw this post and decided to check my Konjac bulbs to see if they were doing anything. Here is what they look like this morning. I totally forgot about these bulbs until I saw your post, they were also in a box. Not looking forward to the smell. These bloomed 2 years ago and it was the most horrible smell I ever smelled. It made our eyes water for days, and who wants to eat when you house smells like rotting meat, or flesh. I do have some small bulblets if anyone wants some, but it's to early to ship, they can't freeze. Thanks for posting this thread. Cathy

Those look like a couple of Big smelly bulbs!!!Some one is going to be happy!!
If I had not just gone through,The Smell.I would be jumping on this offer!!!

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

Cathy,

I'll trade you anything in our inventory for one.

We currently have:

Zephyranthes candida (White rain Lily)
Zephyranthes carinata (Pink)
Habranthus (Pink)
Hymenocallis variegata
Proiphys (Eurycles) ambionenesi
Eucrosia bi-color
Haemanthus multiflorus

We also have some neat things coming in March, if none of that interests you.

Chris.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

Chris, I didn't see anything on your list, I do like Brugmansia if you have any of those for trade. If not, I will send you some for a sase. I will have to wait a short time until this weather warms up. The bulbs in the photo are not for trade, I have grown them for 6 years now. Bloomed in the 4th year. The 2 bulbs weight over 5lbs each. You have to be patient growing these baby's. I do love the foliage they get in the summer. Cathy

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

root,

I was just doing some more reading on these, and it sounds like they can't be singly polinated. It looks as if the stigma is only receptive the first day the flower opens. The problem is that the male end doesn't open until the day after, and the stigma are no lonfer receptive to pollen.

Sounds like you need to have 2. Neighbors would probably report you to the police if you had more than one in the house.

Chris

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

LOL!Chris,If I had more then one I would be sleeping out in my tent!
You are right,I did get a chance to observe the bloom cycle(with my nose pinched!)it is amazing,I really can't wait to see it again,I did not get to save pollen, but did get in it and try to push things around.
This brought me to the conclusion you just made.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

cbrandenburg, I would gladly send you a brug or two for one or two bulbs.

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

Anyone have extra Amorphophallus bulbs? Variety doesnt matter. I am not looking those huge bulbs, smaller ones I mean. Baby bulbs:)

Valrico, FL(Zone 9b)

I just broke down and bought a few varieties of Amorphophallus from Cook's

www.flytraps.com

Dean says he has titanum coming in and priced around $35.00. I've yet to see it priced below $100.00, so I got on the waiting list for that one as well.

Chris
