What is the AV forum??
We're looking for non-DG gardening experts!
African violets
Thank you - just showing my ignorance, not into AV's! They are beautiful but do not do well for me.
Azalea....I'm glad you asked...kept me from showing MY ignorance!!! LOL Jo
If you're still receiving nominations, here is one..
Jim Rogers ...NearlyNativeNursery.com
He and his wife Debi are very helpful and knowledgable. They have supplied me with a few Texas Natives as well as assisting with host plants for butterflies. They go the extra mile to help with a trusting/family-like attitude. I think their being here would help them keep close to the gardening buzzes that are so critical for any plant supplier.
They recently expanded and moved to a bigger place, but you can reach them at the above url.

I nominate someone here in Central Florida. His name is Robert Vincent Sims a/k/a "The Garden Rebel". He is knowledgeable on any and all Southern Plants, he's been gardening since he was a very young boy! His enthusiasm for Growing is so Contagious! He is the owner of a landscaping business and holds speaking engagements at many Garden Shows around the State and also has been on the radio for more than 20 years. He has a great personality and would truly be a HUGE asset to DG, especially the Florida and Southern Gardening Forums! Please check out his web site at:

I think I will just have to bookmark this site!!!!!!!
What about Tom Carruth? He's the hybridizing GURU for weeks roses. He's brilliant, funny and extremely dedicated to educating the public about roses. He also makes himself available to Master Gardeners and Rose Societies and just about any major gardening group. He wants the gardening world to get over their collective fear of growing roses and he's very good at reassuring people that rose cultivation can actually be a very rewarding avocation.
I'd like to second: Paul James, Howard Garret and Neil Sperry - only I wouldn't recommend the last two be allowed to work separately and with distance from one another.
Also, what about some of the folks from the University and Extension centers around the country? There are several people from Texas A&M(Gig 'em Aggies!!!) who are extremely knowledgeable and very open to working with the public. There are also a ton of experts on regional horticulture at the extension centers and it is their job to educate the public. I can work on getting names and emails for some Texas folk but it'll be tomorrow before I have the info as I have to sign off for several hours. Would anyone like for me to do that?Is there anyone who can corral some local folks in states other than Texas?
hmmmm ... Is this thread active again? Looks like it's been on going for a few years since the original post was January 2004! I'm curious to hear what has happened with this.
plantladylin,
I too would like to know if this site is active again, and can we get Paul James the gardener guy? There is a sweet little old man where I work who has the best advise on gardening things. I tend to analize everything to death but Frank, he's priceless. When I first found out about wintersowning, I was sharing this valuable information with him. He just looked up at me, smiled, and said "I just put the seeds in the ground in early Spring." Like what is the big deal! I would nominate him, but I'm not sure he uses a computer at home.
Dea mentioned Andre Viette near the top of this thread... I was recently stunned to discover my DH regularly listens to his program (DH is not a garden guy, but he says Andre makes sense and is interesting to listen to, and he learns about stuff so he understands what I babble about when I start talking plants). I think he'd be a great choice for a courtesy subscription invitation!
My choice for the northwest
Great guy and so smart. Just watch his videos.

There's an Ottawa area gardening guru - Ed Lawrence. Has a web site - http://www.gardeningwithed.com/
and an impressive bio - http://www.gardeningwithed.com/abouted.php
Has been a phone-in gardening expert on CBC radio each Monday for years.
There is an email address on the web site, but primarily for his book. I imagine, he could eventually be contacted through it.

We do still take suggestions ;o)
I'd love to hear more of Brian Mahieu's views and theories on daylily hybridizing. Bluegrass Gardens is the exclusive source for new Mahieu Introductions- and it's owner David Burris is a member of DG, but I don't think Brian is. Here is the contact info on him:
http://www.brianmahieu.com/contactform.html
He's got lots of good info on hybridizing here- http://www.brianmahieu.com/lilywood/whitacres.html
but it would be interesting if we could get him posting on the everyday thought process that goes on behind hybridizing twords a vision.
Thanks Terry! :D
Brian is a member - he may not be active, but he has a username: http://davesgarden.com/members/brianmahieu/
Brian is a member but not a subscriber. That means that only a few forums are open to him for comments.
Edited to add: To date he has contributed 4 plant details and 3 zipcode reports.
