I second the name of Traci DiSabato-Aust. I love her book on Perennials. Another book I have devoured has been The Hosta Handbook by Mark Ziller. He owns Q & Z Nursery in Rochelle, Illinois.

We're looking for non-DG gardening experts!
Terry
I sent you a link in an email :)
Tony Avent from Plant Delights Nursery. I know he gives talks all over the country, but he'd be a great resource.
Also, Steve Vinisky is the President of the American Daffodil Society. He might be able to add to our little haven here.
Here's another one...Deborah Lalumondier - Horticulturist II
21 years at Missouri Botanical Garden.
The Lynds of Lynds Fruit Farm would be great -- They've had orchards here for generations and really know their stuff. Plus, they also hybridize and sell daylilies.
They're well known around here as a great source of knowledge!

Dave, this link's for you, because I know you like John Deere tractors: http://www.lyndfruitfarm.com/john.htm

I would like to suggest Erik Draper- He is a county extension agent in Geauga Co. in Ohio. He has a doctorate in horticulture and was one of the instructors when I took the Master Gardener course in Seneca Co.He has a great sense of humor and is a natural educator. One of his areas of expertise is crabapple trees and he has experimented and written extensively on the subject. He participates regularly in the seasonal discussion group BGYL from OSU . Email draper.15@osu.edu ph. 440-834-4656
Oh, yes, I've read his stuff on BGYL - he is very good, and funny.
This man led our MG segment on entomology last night and was he great! funny too! I don't know him at all but I think he would have lots of input for people. He teaches at Iowa State. Donald Lewis, email drlewis@iastate.edu. If you are looking for someone with lots of dwarf plant/tree knowledge, I was told the person to contact is Paula Flynn at pflynn@iastate.edu. The man who led the pathogens segment was Mark Gleason, mgleason@iastate.edu. The man knows a lot of 'stuff'!
edited to correct address. sorry!

Howard Garrett; the Dirt Doctor.
He has written several books and really is into organic gardening all the ay.
http://www.dirtdoctor.com/index.php
I didn't see Daniel Hinkley's name listed as a great informed person. Maybe I missed it. He would be great if he would consent to answer questions or whatever. He is so busy. i have his book 'The Exlorer's Garden' and have ordered from Herronswood many times. Donna
TC: Is Felder Rushing interested in joining DG, do you know?
Since more and more of us are interested in gourds, I recommend Ginger Summit. Her books are so helpful.

All these suggestions are terrific! So we can keep moving forward, let's do a "last call" here. Any/all other suggestions should be posted here by tomorrow night, January 31.
I'm compiling all the names you've suggested, and on Monday, I'll give them to Dave with my personal recommendations, so he can make his final selections.
So, Terry... Is this going to be the new "secret site"????????????
Nope :o)
What about Dan Heims! Here is a little (or big) bio about him! http://www.terranovanurseries.com/pages/historyDAN.html

Terry did you get my email regarding National Collection Holders from a couple of weeks ago?
yes, ma'am I did - thanks!
I nominate Dr. Jacob Mittleider, who is unique in his level of world-side experience teaching and demonstrating vegetable gardening. He is the author of 10 vegetable gardening books, as well as over 80 video training and demonstration lectures.
He has conducted 75 gardening projects, ranging from a few weeks to several years each, in 27 countries around the world. In some countries, he is even considered to be a celebrity of sorts, because of the great benefits he has brought to the people.
His materials can be seen at www.foodforeveryone.org, and he can be reached at info@foodforeveryone.org.
Jim Kennard
Norman Winters is the man around here. He is a Horticulturist with Mississippi State University. He publishes articles and is on ours news once a week for a brief article. He can be reached at normanw@ext.msstate.edu http://msucares.com/news/print/sgnews/
Phyllis Stevens - very friendly and funny Master Gardener who is on television here, if she'd join, you'd have a real winner! I just found her KXLY email:
PhyllisS@kxly.com
She is such a hoot, and I just have this inkling that she'd like us too!
Didn't read all the posts. I think Walter Reeves is one of the most practical and knowledgeable southern gardeners.
Just curious if anything came of this? Did any of those reccomended accept the offer and if so are they here and active? ( have I over looked them?) Or was this put on the back burner to simmer for awhile ?
Hi Zany,
Nice seeing you [and your garden troll] again.
Yup I see him out back scampering off with your favorite pruning shears .heeeeeee !
Wonder what ever became of Jim Kennard.
Sadly I seem to remember his DW was seriously ill ?
jazzyl,
WR is one cool guy. I have been getting his newsletters for a year or 2 .
~Shirley
Thank's scooterbug, did you see which way he went? The berry vines are in dire need of trimming back over the fence line again
Some of these folks were given a one-year subscription. Those that didn't participate in the forums most likey didn't re-up on their own, and we wouldn't have are renewed them. But we're always open to suggestions for others to contact!
Thanks Terry, I have no one in mind but I am sure there are lots of others out there who have an idea or two yet.
Scooter - Jim Kennard lost his wife some time back. I sent him birthday greetings but have not heard from him. Hope he's doing ok.
I didn't see this before, but how about Mike Nowak email: MikeNowak@wgnradio.com
This info on him is on his bio page on wgnradio.com:
Michael earned his Master Gardening certificate in 1997 at the Chicago Botanic Garden; became a certified TreeKeeper for the Openlands Project in 1999; began writing a column (you can find it on the inside back page) for Chicagoland Gardening Magazine in January of 2003; and became President of the Midwest Ecological Landscaping Association (MELA) about the same time.
His radio talk shows, "Let's Talk Gardening", are very informative and he covers a variety of topics. I think he would have alot to offer, if he were to participate.
Deb
Maybe a "Topic" forum to discuss singular subjects; the genus 'ABC'; spring pruning; color concepts; garden soil; etc...
But a forum very specific of input such as research web sites, photos, actual experience, graphs and charts, etc...
A forum meant to completely study one subject.
Tickles me, I read the entire thread before I realized it's 3 years old. A grand effort to enlarge our knowledge base. Y'all make me smile this Easter morning. ~ always innovating and tweaking and improving. Dave's ROCKS
Blooms - you have "made my day" every time I log on here I find something I missed earlier. and have to start all over - takes up a lot of time - but well worth the time & effort
If he hasn't already been invited, I second Evert's nomination of Markku Häkkinen. He is a member of California Rare Fruit Growers, an expert on bananas and other tropical fruits. If he can grow them in Finland, it gives hope to others. He often contributes articles and photos to CRFG's Fruit Gardener magazine.
lonrom@hevanet.com Lon Rombrough is a NAFEX member and expert on grapes. He contributes freely to the the NAFEX mailing list but I'm not sure whether he'd find the time to participate in a forum.
Lee Reich is a NAFEX member, an accomplished garden writer, and expert on less commonly grown fruits. garden@leereich.com
Bill Grimes is the President of California Rare Fruit Growers and unlike many of our older members who hate the internet, he's quite internet-savvy and perhaps has enough time to participate here. wagrimes@sonic.net
I would love to see someone from the permaculture community participate here. Geoff Lawson is probably too busy but maybe he knows a good candidate. Geoff's project "Greening the Desert" in Jordan is just amazing. geoff@permaculture.org.au
Great suggestions - thank you! At this precise moment, I'm not sure where Dave's at on offering professional courtesy subs, but we'll definitely discuss it soon.
Remember this thread was resurrected after it languished for three years, so we weren't actively pursuing suggestions when it popped back up ;o)
Okay, I admit to not reading the entire thread so disregard me if I'm a dupe.
Have you invited people like Renee from Renea's Garden and Glen at Sandhill, etc? People who garden, LOVE to read up on gardening, and if they are invited to speak in the forums of their interest, some really love to share what they know and have an audience. It could work out to everyone's advantage because you could have headers and footers for the speakers that reference their websites. I know you guys don't like to force feed advertising, but really good advertising is discreet and can be subliminal.
Maybe you could just keep it in mind in case you have certain vendors you can discuss the idea potential, because we all loooove the Known names (Paul James etc.) and we Learn of the other popular ones in here!!!!
I know it goes against the concept of DG for the most part, but again, I'm just tossing out an idea that may lead to other ideas.
Thanks.
I would think the combined contribution of Dave's Garden members is equal to any expert in most any field, less laboratory studies.
My vote would go anyone who could replace Allison on the Av forum.....we are absolutely lost without her expertise...I just email her everytime I need her (which is almost everyday)....can anyone encourage people to come over from lots of AV chat rooms all over the internet....I know there are several groups on yahoo and msn .
I don't want to go over there and have to keep up with several sites....DG is set up best, but we defintely need help on the AV forum.
