THINKIN' SPRING

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Wow, looks like that icky pic stopped this thread in it's tracks, lol! That's just the "May" pic. You should see how awful it looks in June & July! That's why I've revamped it and am anxiously awaiting this next Spring to see the outcome! OK, here's 2 pics (dif angles) of June/July - what a mess! lol!

Here's the 2nd Pic of Summer. What's bad, is after those daisies actually bloom, it just took one windy day and that garden looked like a complete disaster.

I moved that Shasta Daisy, and replaced it with a smaller, sturdier African Daisy. But we won't see pics of the changes until this next year.

Karrie, what else is replaced/new in this bed? Is that blue spikey plant a salvia? I notice that the neighboring yards on your corner don't look nearly as nice as yours.

The blue spike is Mountain Meadow Sage.

I pulled out all but one of the Rose Campions (they grow like weeds, take over, so will always have to do that)

I also added some Bee Balm, Tulips, Crocus & Hycinth (spelling?). Some other perennials as well but can't think of the names off hand and they are under snow now.

What I am TRYING to do is make the bed look attractive from early Spring to Autumn. I have removed most of the real tall plants, as they end up looking so wild there, and I am looking for more of a groomed look for that spot. I also removed some of the ground cover plants (the ones in front) because I found out they should have more shade to flower, and go nice under hedges - moved them under the hedges.

After I see what has survived, I'll fill in with some annuals, maybe Million Bells (love those).

Oh, you know what is so sad about that neighbor's yard in the corner? Two young married kids with little children just bought that place. It's a double lot and used to belong to a Master Gardener. Those kids didn't weed or anything - just let it go. Some of the weeds grew 10 feet tall. It is so sad.

Yes that is sad to see everything so neglected when it once was pretty. I can see that it once had been taken care of. Maybe the young wife would like a friend to teach her to take care of it and then you both would have something better to look at. Or maybe you already tried that.....

My neighbor saw the roses I put in last year (15) and said he'd like to do some along the same chain link fence line this year...I plan to help him. It beats the weeds he grew last year!
Maybe your neighbor would let you do a project??? Inspire them!

I don't know, Mary. They are so young and busy with little children, I think what their main problem is "time" to spend on that huge yard, and I can't do it for them, although I wish I could!
