Vote for the 2003 Photo Contest!

It's November 1st, and that means it is that time again: time to choose winners for the 2003 Photo Contest.

If you want to vote, go here:

http://davesgarden.com/contest/2003/

You can vote in every category, and you can vote for multiple winners. The system will do the hard part - you just tell it which pictures you approve of.

Have fun! The judging will close on November 30th at the latest.

Dave, it is very hard to vote where there are multiple categories.. I mean, it's hard to keep track of the categories as you scroll down, and to remember in which category you have already voted. Any ideas how to do it better?

I thought long and hard about this, and I couldn't come up with any better idea than this. :( There's a lot of photos and a lot of categories...

One thought I had was to go through and do ten pictures per screen, with a "Next set" link to go to the next ten pictures, but that was a bit cludgy and you can't see the other pictures simultaneously.

I think the best thing to do is scroll back up to see which category you're looking at before each vote.

If you have a better idea, I'm all ears!!

Dave I don't see a Yes Or No place to vote?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Dave,In the Birds/Butterflies contest I can view the pictures up to the :Bluebird on branch". The pictures after that are blank squares with a red X.

I managed to see everything and vote in the garden art contest. Maybe because it only has one voting category.
The rest that I tried doesn't work.
In Netscape, I can't enlarge the photos. I get a half size window, that is showing the bottom window through on the rights side and no photo. The window will not mazimize.
In IE I can enlarge the photos but the voting boxes are floating around all over the page.
I tried restarting the computer and the modem several times but no difference.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Well everything worked just fine for me!

On the pages where there were more than 1 catagory, I just divided it into two for example, and voted for the 1st two catagories and went back up to do the second two.
Less strain on this old brain, lol!

Well done Dave, and thank you!

Hobart, IN(Zone 5a)

There are so many beautiful photo's it's going to be hard to decide how to vote. I checked all of the categories and they seem to be working just fine. Now, to decide which ones to vote for.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

Not working for me, checked the brugs and dats and the little boxes are all messed up, some have them most don't.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Seems like some pages are OK, and some aren't.

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

I tried some more and the Miscellaneous and Roses category worked both in IE and Netscape, those are also single category voters.
In the Brug contest I can't see all the thumb nails in Netscape. The last one visible is Apricot Queen. After that it is all black. I get all of them in IE.
I get all the voting boxes right in Netscape. In IE they don't stay in the right place when I scroll the screen.
I can enlarge photos in IE but not in Netscape.

It looks like I might have to decide in IE and vote in Netscape. Lots of work.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Works just fine for me, I'm using IE (6.0)

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Just went back into Butterflies/Birds and all is working well now.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

pages with just one catagory work for me, in IE, those with more than one, don't.

Everything seems to work in Netscape.

Is there any way that you could separate out the birds and bugs? Like just the bugs on one page, just the birds on another? It's kinda hard to navigate on the multiple entry pages... if not, I'll manage...

Thanks Dave.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

I did what Violabird did, at the top of the page is a category, then scroll through the pictures down, pick a winner then back to the top, pick the second category scroll down. It was easier for me to keep track that way.

I've been able to vote two categories so far. Some don't show the yes/no box and some are not in line. Does that make sense. In other words, there might be 2 or 3 yes/no boxes that go with one picture.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Vic, I thought it was just my computer. The same thing was happening to me too, so I rebooted. Haven't been back just yet to see if my reboot fixed it or not.
But I was having the exact same problems. There was nothing to check, no boxes. Then back at the top it was messed up looking like you said with several check boxes all in one little spot.
Going to check it out now :)

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Just went there and I waited while the butterfly and bees opened, it showed at the bottom that it was completely loaded and all I got was the first pics check boxes. None of the other ones loaded????

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

I get the pictures alright, but there are way too many voting boxes per entry. Also, after viewing pics for a short while the computer hangs.
Back to the drawing board; so sorry )~:

Edited to add:
I use MS Internet Explorer5, which has never let me down.

IMHO

Don't use Netscape; loved it years ago but now it cannot keep up with IE.

sorry

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I can't vote either,no boxes

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Welp, on a positive note, I've viewed quite a few of the pics, was able to vote, register the votes, and all was fine.

(and here I thought I had puter probs.)

Looks good from where I'm sitting.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

OK ,I started fooling with it,that was a mistake,I clicked where there were no boxes,a yes showed up,then I couldn't make it go away, nothing I clicked changed it,I voted without voting!!!
I was froze out!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Seems to be working for me so far. I've only been in two categories though.

One thing I noticed in the veggie one is that there's some great pictures of vegetables, but there's not an appropriate way to vote for it if it's not a tomato, pumpkin, veggie patch or unusual. What if it's just a wonderful specimen of bean or pepper or whatever?

Jacksonville, IL(Zone 5a)

I wanted to mention that for we non-datura/brug growers it's hard to tell the difference between the varities. So when a vote is place for a "best" in either category, and the word datura or brug isn't mentioned in the comment, it mite be for the wrong category of plants.

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

roshana: I agree. I got lost in the Brug/Datura category. Might be a suggestion for next years contest, for the entrant to list exactly what their photo is for.( I am completely guilty of this!) I found this a little cumbersome in a few spots. But, ......!!!!!!!!!
I really loved voting all the same! What FUN it was to view everyones photos and see the different landscapes!

We all encourage each other and cheer each other and I think our gardens reflect the same. I know for a fact, my garden would no where be NEAR the success it has had without my friends at Daves Garden!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I am not able to vote either. too many yes/no boxes and they do not line up with the pictures. Then reboot and no boxes at all. Glad to read above that it is not just my computer acting hinkey!

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

We have until November 30th to vote. Let's give Dave some time to look at this.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I think it should list what it is too in the multiple choice areas. And I agree that the dats should be specified for the non-brug heads.
Also some say theirs are in containers ,but I think the container should have to show in the picture so we know, and then be in the running in that catagory.I'm sure some of those dats are in containers but I don't see the container.

Blenheim, New Zealand

right on golddog, but I have been trying 2 send a photo to see if it helps but have not been able to do it .will try with this. will not take photo.

I'll have to look into this and find out what it's not working in you-guy's browsers. I'll take a close look tomorrow! And, I'll be happy to extend the close of the voting to a later date, if need be!

Dave

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I thought this method of voting was great. It was easy, maybe a little confusing at times with so many categories to chose from, and I did have to keep scrolling back to the top to make sure I was in the right category. But...............if you have ever been a judge for a contest here at Daves and have to make the decision for all the members, it isn't a lot of fun and it is a lot of work. I think Dave did a great job coming up with the sofware for the contests. I'll deal with a little problem now and then to do it this way. I'm sure Dave will get it all fixed in no time. CC, I agree with you about the containers. Thanks Dave...this was a great idea for handling the contests.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

The scrolling up and down does make it a little confusing. I know it would be clunky-looking, but could there be a text label directly above each drop-down, or perhaps repeated every so many rows?

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I guess I might be a little confused in the roses category too, Are we voting on the Rose, or the picture? There is one picture I love, but I don't know whether I"m supposed to be voting like that?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Melissa_Ohio, The vote is for the photo. There is no way we could judge a flower or plant from a photo since we cannot see it from all angles or test its scent or other attributes. And since beauty is in the eye of the beholder the winners are always a subjective choice. So choose what YOU like!

Melissa,

Both. :) You're voting for whoever you want to win the contest. Generally, that'd be the picture(s) that you thought were the best ones among the group.

Dave

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I don't know if it helps or not but the ones I didn't have any trouble with where garden art, veggies, tropicals, roses, and lilies. The others I am having the same problems as the others above.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Dave, sorry to be tardy with a suggestion that could be helpful. Is there some way to have voting "blocked" after you have voted in one award category on a particular photo category, so that you cannot re-vote in, say, "best overall" unless you cancel the first vote... make any sense?

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I think it does Darius, when I went back to a category I had already voted in, my votes were marked yes. I assume that if I change my yes to a no, that my new vote is the one that is registered.
