I am constantly amazed at the goodness that I see on this site. I just discovered DG a few weeks ago and knew I had to subscribe. I was laid off from my job recently, so I can't send much, but I feel compelled to give because this site has given me something to look forward to each day.
Thank you, Dave, such a wonderful place and God bless all of you.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Welcome Plant_fiend, I am pleased to meet you. I am from Georgia :-) I am also fairly new, but wanted to let you know, we are all happy to have you with us. Thank you and hope to talk again real soon :-)

Thank you for the warm welcome, Annabellegabby. Hope every had a fun and safe Halloween. My girls sure did, though they were trick-or-treating in the rain (very light). Hopefully some of this rain is making it down south where they sure can use it.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

It is pouring here. The fires should be out shortly, hurrah!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, thank God, my prayers have been answered!!! Even though the fires haven't effected me, I think I can feel everyone's anxiety & pain in CA. Let's hope it's all over.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

your most welcome, glad you joined Dave's Garden, and youre right, everyone here is "angels" in my book :-)

Glad you all got some rain to put them fires out in CA. but I feel bad for the lil' ones for trick-or-treating...

We had rain here in GA last year, but this year it was clear as a bell...not bragging but it was a perfect night with the stars and half moon showing with a light haze over it...kinda spooky but fun anyway! I had a blast with my nephews and I hope you all did too :-)

God bless

The GARU (Georgia Round UP of DG'ers) raised almost $100 last week (April 23, 2005) in donations to the Garden Angel Fund.

I challenge other RU's to do the same!

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow that is wonderful. I am so glad to hear that, I hope more will take you up on that darius.
What a good job..........wooo hoooo

The KYRU raised several hundred last year. I don't remember the exact total though. It's a great idea. We just need more ideas for using the funds in my humble opinion.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

The KYRU raised several hundred because the quilt auction was opened to the general DG membership.

Am thinking of ways and means to reciprocate the gestures through this Garden Angel Program, being a beneficiary myself. But for it, I'd not have been here typing out this sentence now. It's made me a better person, a real gardener, one who can say so! It's just a beautiful place to visit - the visitations are only through the keyboard/monitor, but it can take us into homes of lovely gardeners and finally into their hearts, sitting out here, half way round the earth [as I'd like to add often]! It's my own experience, take it from me.

Dinu...it is so nice to read how the recipents feel !! Thank you for sharing with us!

How about grow boxes? I suspect there are some members who would like fresh tomatoes, etc., but can't afford the boxes. I'm lucky my DH could build me a raised bed to make it easier for me to garden, but I'm sure there are some who are not able to garden traditionally any longer and might benefit from a box or two. A quiet word to Dave, Trish, or Terry might be in order?

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Great idea...

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Darius,

With all due respect, the several hundred dollars I was referring to had nothing to do with the quilt raffle. We had a silent auction that raised over $325 - all of which was donated to the Garden Angel Fund.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Earth Boxes are very expensive and then it becomes a very difficult task of determining who should receive one. We have many disabled gardeners. Choosing who gets one and who doesn't would be a tough task.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Carla, I didn't remember that the silent auction raised that much. My apologies.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Hey, no problem. I had to check with Melody to be sure, myself. I thought it was over $300, but I couldn't remember exactly. My brain cells seem to be shrinking with every year I age. :)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Daves posting at the top of this thread says the fund doesn't need additional money at this time... if you all are wanting to raise money for the fund, what about getting him to edit out that statement??

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

...or ask him if the note is still in force, and a fund raiser isn't necessary at this time ;o)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Dave's note is still in force- we have a very well padded Garden Angel Fund.

I don't agree that we need more ways to spend the money in the fund. Those who contributed did so under the assumption that the funds were going to be used to pay for someone's subscription who couldn't otherwise afford it, and that is exactly what we will be using the fund for. Giving freebees away isn't the fund's purpose.

The Garden Angel Committee has done an outstanding job in searching out those in need, and many have been blessed by their efforts.

I think we need to let ideas simmer until next year when we will need to explore restocking the fund.

Trish

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I agree with Trish....the funds were donated with a certian use specified for. We can't change after the fact. It wouldn't be fair to the folks who donated.

I've been trying to think of another project to envolve the membership and haven't come up with anything that is perfect...I'd like to sponsor another one, but not until we have a specific use and a plan that's workable.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

By it's definition, the Garden Angel fund is designed to give away freebies - free subscriptions. :~)

Ok, scratch the idea for using the fund for other things.... there are still many other ways to help others that doesn't involve this money. I like Melody's idea of coming up with another project to involve the membership better anyway.

Melody, there are a number of folks, over the past few years who have requested seeds or plants for non-profit groups. Is there, perhaps, an opportunity to assist these folks in their quest to help others? I'm sure that there would need to be some means for verifying their project(s), but it would be lovely to have a way to support folks who genuinely want to make the world a nicer place. Just a thought.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

I am just so happy to hear of this thread and this fund. I will be sending a donation asap with the hopes of helping out someone affected by Katrina. I am sure with all the memberships in that area, that whatever is in this fund will be quickly used up! I hope we don't lose any of our hurricane affected friends out there! Bless you Dave and Trish for this fund! Hugs, mich

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Dave and I are giving a year's subscription to anyone whose house was totally destroyed. The Garden Angel committee will be working through all of those who were otherwise affected.

This is the reason the fund was created in the first place, and my wonderful committee has been great about carefully (but freely) giving to those who have a true need.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Good News!!
Thanks.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Bumping...
Due to the recent change in closing forums I am wondering if the Angel fund could use some donations now to assist some of our dear friends here and overseas.
