Creeping out quietly to check dats & bugs on brugs... ssshhhh....
Morph, if I were home that is what I would be doing right now. I also bring my camera and go around the yard. It is so quiet and intimate at night. The fragrances are great.
Glad you can still post from wherever you are, Kell :) DGs, the recent posts and the blackout have inspired me to go out and see what lurks in the dark :)
Maybe MaVieRose or someone can make sure I've identified this correctly. Thought it was a triple purple D.
Compared to the picture above, I now see it's been doing its best blooming at night! Should have known it would do that to me! From day one, these seeds were feisty and now the plants are just the same!
So pretty! I love the purple dats.
I am in NJ. My DS gave me his laptop to use so I would not go nuts. It has been here all summer as my sister and I trade places staying with my Mom and she and I keep in constant touch on line. I could not leave her here without a computer when I go home and she comes! But my son wants it back for school now so during my October visit I may just have to go nuts. LOL
Morph... yes, the one u got there is Dat. metel var. fastuosa. commonly known as Black currant swirl or cornucopia. visit this link to verify... http://www.americanbrugmansia-daturasociety.org/datura_metel.htm
Wow Ma Vie, I have never looked at that page before. I just love this one - - D. metel var. f astuosa form fastuosa
cv. 'Cornucopaea'
Have you seen this one in person?
Thanks, MVR! I've been wrong then and should correct myself! What a great site/link! I don't know which if any of these would be a triple purple datura, but I sure would like to see :)
Thanks much for steering me in the right direction! And, it's on the Rich Sanders site which helps me in my quest to try and cross pollinate! {{{{hugs}}}}
Kell... from personal experience, the cornucopaea and black currant dats are one and the same. ask Tonny if there are any difference? they sure look the same to me ;).
u're welcome Morph... that is the beauty of surfing on the great WWW. ask and u will find.{giggles}
Kell, I'm glad you're not web deprived ~ I have been in the past and the lack of DG always causes withdrawal! I don't want to hijack this thread so I'll catch up on your mom by doing some searching/reading. I hope she's okay.
Oh she is just fine Morph! Taking each day one at a time.
So Ma Vie, the D. metel var. fastuosa form fastuosa
cv. 'Cornucopaea' looks like it is spotted. Is it? Or am I seeing the pic wrong?

Kell, my friend in Canada sent me some seeds called Black Currant Swirl. then another friend in NC sent me some seeds he labeled as cornucopia. after i planted both seeds, the blooms looked the same to me. no difference at all.
i tried writing Tonny several times, but he does not respond! some of his threads i bookmarked before are no longer existing :(. they were good reference too! how sad!
I haven't seen either in real life but if they are spotted I want them! LOL
you have mail. again tonight! lol
Kell, the flower is not spotted at all. sometimes before the flower fully bloom, they look like they got spots. but soon as they open they are creamy almost white on the inside. the other side of flower is dark purple. i've notice the spots too, but they disappear in time.
LOL!!!
'Here's bug in your eye!' lol That's priceless. :)
LOL Root! I will show her your new pic and that is sure to make her feel better! At least she is not looking at a big bug on her eyeball! LOL Root!
This is my first year to try and grow daturas. Unfortunately the first ones I had were the wild type that have a ton of flowers but they never fully open and I have now read that the plant is grown more for its foliage (oak shaped leaves) than for its flowers. My second attempt is a double purple which I started quite late in the season so it is only now starting to bloom. I have been watching the blooms like an anxious mother hen waiting for them to do their stuff. This morning I noticed the flower bud(?) which was the furthest along looks marginally less happy than yesterday. Do they ever decide to wilt before blooming and if so why? These plants are teasing me and I want to have chance to collect seed since seeds here are hard to come by and frost is just around the corner. HELP
Great photo, Root ☺ I just reread your first post to this thread and laughed... Glad you aren't offended by all our diverging! Is that a praying mantis on your eye?
Kell, did you ever sleep last night? Man, you and flowox had me beat!
Jagonjune, if you had the strange weather we did here, that may be a factor. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get seeds again this year as my dats are blooming. If yours decide not to bloom for you, no worries as I can share my seeds with ya. Maybe you want to give them a good dose of some fish emulsion? I know they usually thrive w/out attention, but I did give mine some of this and I think it really helped.
Jagonjune: I am sure by seasons end, there will be a ton of seeds available. I let mine put on all the seedpods they can. They are doing really well this year and it looks like I'll get a good harvast of seeds. Some of the ones I am growing are the Golden Queen-triple yellow, the dbl. Purple and two different kinds of white and the discolor.
Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I will be anxiously awaiting your seed harvest - especially the triple yellow.
Oh, Debby I am hoping for triple yellow too!
Rooty,
So exciting, maybe I need to stay up and watch this thread tonight?
p.s. still waiting for snail mail addie ;~)
[[Our babies are thriving]] >^,,^< SB
And why is Lonni faceless???
To protect his Identity!Or it could be too many beers!LOL!
Must be your sodas! I was going to comment that he doesn't look like he's had many. LOL
Picture may cause Lonni embarassment,as it was taken while he was tearfully pleading with rooty to give him the keys back..."Pretty please with sugar on"" :~D SB
LOL Scooter!
Wind your double is just gorgeous.
Root, Love your purple dats. That is one nice thing about dats they bloom upright instead of down facing. the other photo is wonderful, how did that guy feel on your face!!!

Ecobioangie: Moonflower is a vine. Alot of people call the white datura Moonflower. The white datura is bushy and doesn't vine, it spreads across the ground. They both open at night and the datura will stay open the next day until the sun hits them.
Thanks debby. I'm pretty sure it's datura, as I have the real moonflower and now I see the difference.
