In situ, a purple
Dat Lovers.
Alright Padre!!!!!What a show!Don't you just love them?they do this from seed every year, your first sure looks triple, and looks like a white in the next one, have you been sniffing them at night?they have a nice scent akin to Brugs.Be sure to save seeds so we can all swap this fall.
is it just me,or is everyone else holding thier breath on the Varigated that may someday be available?
Rooty, Is that your African Mask in the background of your White Dat picture ??
;~) SB
No Scooter,it is C. Illutsrius(sp?)Need more coffee!
Root, so happy you started this thread! Fell in love with these doubles, especially the purple.
I'll be watching this thread, to be sure! :)
Great thread and some great pictures. I'll have a ton of the triple yellow seeds. I've been to lazy to dead head.
Have the Belle Blanche and love it; Also have the double purple.
Will be hoping for seeds on the raspberry swirl (how big are the blooms?) and all the doubles and triples!
Do those pods need to dry on the plant to be viable. If so I better get something to wrap around them so I can catch the seeds when they burst.
MVR,is your wild datura fragrant?
Is anyone out there working with crossing colors and type in the Dat's like they are with the Brugs....I'm sure they are cause we have some different colors....If you are doing this please post what it is crossed with...And tell some of the technique used....I would be very interested in this.....and any links you might know of.... :o)
i do not know Colie... it got so much spines i don't dare come anywhere near it. spines on the trunk, leaves, flowers and the seed pod.
WW i know Tonny and Eric discussed it at some point, not too long ago. perhaps Tonny is???
Dang It Rooty ...Guess I need a diff spelling to look it up. I googled what you sent and I got the message,"What!!You crazy woman??" LOL
>^,,^< SB
Willow, I'm not doing crosses with Dats. But, I'm going to try to cross a datura with a brug. Only thing is, I don't have a "Datura: Biology 101" like the "Brugmansias: Biology 101" that Calalily provided.
Actually, in the other thread I had about this, http://davesgarden.com/t/394519/, Monika thinks it not likely possible since the datura (thorn apples) are "self fertile".
I think its worth a try.....after all we can certain profit from any mistakes and may get a good one to take for us. I may try some crossing too just need to get more info....I will try and find more links and keep you posted....
I havn't started any "brugs" don't know how they would do here in this heat and extreme humidity...will try them later.... :o)
Willow, thanks for the vote of encouragement! I think it will be fun to try just to see, too! Yes, if you find any links or additional info, I would love see it :) This is my first year for brugs and only second for dats so I've a LOT to learn!
What a bunch of great pics!! Sorry I have not answered your email Debby. The answers are yes, yes and yes!! LOL I have been busy working on the house like a madwoman the past few days. Had an appraisal today for a refinance. I'll know for sure tomorrow.
Debby, keep seeds for Rasp swirl, mine did not get going.Wow it looks great.
Scooter Magruterer, why goggle when you have a search right here at Daves?http://davesgarden.com/t/389115/illustrus
Seed,I think you are Nesting!LOL!Goodluck Hon,keep me posted!
I like this one a little more every day!
Padre, loved your pictures, as I said above i am going to grow Daturas next year for sure. Donna
Root: That last one you posted is very intriqueing looking. Please post photo when fully opened. I think we should just swap all our seeds of the dats, nicotaina and of course castor beans. I've still got the poppy seeds for ya. Might just get the poppies and nicotaina to ya. They are the only ones that are harvasted.
I did go out in the heat today and put stockings on the seedpods of discolor so I can be sure and get all the seeds.
I've found the discolor hard to get going. Even had a little difficulty in the greenhouse with it. Once you get it to growing, it does reseed itself, but not invasively like some of the other varieties of dats. Maybe if you try to winter sow some this winter. I bet you will have better luck.
Hey Root I love that last photo and can't wait to see what it will look like once it blooms, but will be watching.
I guess your gonna have to start another thread for us datura lovers it's getting kind of long lol.
I have some beautiful triple white, and yellow that open today and believe me I am so mad at the little cucumber beetles that I could spit, they are eating up every thing in sight in my garden....little greedy buzzards!
Any way here is one of the triple yellow and it is huge.
very pretty Wind.
Morph have a great time experimenting! you never know what you will discover.
Morph, I hope you come up with something fabulous in your crosses. best of luck.
ahelms,I have Hoppers chomping on mine!%*@!
Wind that one is gorgeous!you said the thread was getting long, are you scrolling down on every thread?go to the top of the thread, right side of column,it says skip to new, this will take you right to new posts everytime.;0)
Debby, don't go out on my account!I will be doing some winter sowing too,so don't hurry to get seeds out to me,they will just sit.
Wind,I hope the green/purp one opens tonight.
Root©ट©¬
fingers X's hope it does too root..... :o)
Thanks Root and I can't wait to see yours as soon as it opens.
Morph that is so funny because I did try that on all my daturas last year, maybe that's why they are so big,I am going to have to measure them, good luck with yours.
I have a quick question about dats...Do they open up at night like moonflowers do? My MIL(piranhapat) has what she was told were moonflowers, but I think they're single white dats.
Ecobioangie they open and bloom during the day, but if you have them in full sun the bloom won't last as long as they do in part shade.
Moon flowers usualy opens at night and white daturas will open durning the day.
TLC you have some beautiful daturas and seed pods, one word of advice is don't be in a hurry because take forever to mature.
the second one is definitely Dat. inoxia. yes it is the same thing i got. funny i thought u didn't have it and sent u some seeds of this LOL!!!!
the upper photo is called Dat. metel var. fastuosa. commonly known as Black currant swirl
