you might be a gardener if....

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

...your computer passwords are plant genera names.

...you have a strange urge to pull out weeds at public parks, other people's yards, and the parking lot at work.

...you buy the house because you like the plants in the yard. (Well, not quite. We bought the house mainly because it has a lot of closet space, but we also liked the plants in the yard.)

...the cabinet in the dining room contains gardening supplies, not table linens.

...you put down linoleum in the living room and dining room because wood or carpet would be spoiled by the dirt you track in and spills from house plants, and you can't afford tile. (Really, we did this. It's not as tacky as it sounds. The linoleum looks like tile and some people have even thought that it was tile and a "cold" flooring works in a hot climate.)

...your photo album is 95% plant pictures and 3/4 of them are from your yard.

...you have only a 1/4 acre yard, but you have at least 200 species and can name most of them off the top of your head.

...your patio furniture consists of only plant stands, with no furniture for humans. Who has time to just sit around?

This one seriously happened to me today!!

You might be a gardener if your postmaster mentions "therapy" to you- After you and your FAMILY carry in boxes of plants to be mailed to your closest Dave's buddies...and it is your third trip this week...LOL

Davena

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

...you look at a construction site and think, "They are paving over all that good soil."

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Yes1 Construction sites with good , black earth showing....

L.A. (Canoga Park), CA(Zone 10a)

...you hear the phrase "dead head", and the first think you think of has nothing to do with Jerry Garcia.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

If your Dh thinks some hanky-panky might be going on 'cause the first thing in the morning and the last thing (late) at night you are at the 'puter claiming it's about gardening and to top it off you keep getting gifts in the mail......LOL....So goes life
=)

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

You KNOW you are a gardener if you drive for 8 hours to meet a bunch of people that you have spent months or years on-line with, just to talk about plants!!!! Not to mention, you bring along your children, grandchildren, and pets. Boy, talk about a crazy bunch of dedicated gardeners. And I am at the head of the list, right? *grin

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

No fair! Ohio had a party and left out us Iowans...

Holland, MI(Zone 6a)

You might be a gardener if you use a power driver to drill holes in the ground to plant dafodil bulbs.

THat is too funny!! I am beginning to REALLY like that man!!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Wanda, DG had a party and EVERYONE was invited :) SoCal came, so did Roadrunner, Louisa, Kathleen, GeorgiaRedClay, Justmelisa, not to mention the 'Shoe! Probably 100 of us! But nobody from IA :(

Y'all just gotta come next year to KY!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Just giving you a hard time! I knew you were all going. I'm going to try to make a big one in the future--it would be fun to meet y'all!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

If you explain all the mess and clutter around the floor and outside the door of your green house as having so much to do with so little time.

I use the word priorities a lot.

Catch your self watching some one selecting the best veg or flower transplants out of a bunch of walley stuff you would not plant.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Birdsall, I think I love you. I have dug up all of my bulbs from all over the yard and am moving them to what used to be the tomato patch. That handy dandy device could save me much time and knee ache. Brilliant!! Since the ground is freshly dug, maybe I can use the old hand mixer to do the big glad bulbs.

Holland, MI(Zone 6a)

Frogs - These "devices" (I think they would be called bits) are available in the big home improvement places. I don't know about the hand mixer though.

At this stage of my back, I do not plant any bulbs, etc. that require taking in for the winter. Daffodils are our favorites.

I have 1 or 2 or 50 bits around here but have never thought to use such a thing to plant a bulb. I can hardly wait to try it! Too bad the hole saw isnt big enough to be of much use.

You know you are a gardner when you find new and creative ways to garden while not bending whatever is stiff today from gardening yesterday.

PS Cute Dog!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh, Birdsall, it is so nice to meet you :) I love the photo -- the thumbnail looked like you were holding a wallaby! But such a cute little chihuahua.

You know you are a gardener when you do a major happy dance over having more of the grass lawn ceded over to be a flower garden when the grass dies :) Yep, I get to eliminate another 20% of the remaining front lawn this fall!!!!!!! Plotting and planning what I can install along with a 4' wide path. Almost full sun!!!!!! (Yep, I am definitely a gardener, not a greensward :D

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Ah, Kathy!!! Yo Girlfriend!!! I just planted an acre of grass and have been laboring over it for 17 days, and just yesterday I see little baby grass coming up. I was so happy!!! DH heard me screaming about it and he was in the house. Can you email me some of that grass you are ripping up?

I have built lots of flowerbeds this summer, still need to plant them next spring, but I cannot possibly have 5 acres of flowerbeds, so we planted grass this fall. (I bet I'm making you cringe, huh?)

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Dear, darling Joan! I would be thrilled to e-mail you part of the sod that I am eliminating ;D I don't think you really want it tho; it is completely infested with grubs that have eaten the roots so badly that it is almost dead anyway. They destroy the same area year after year after year...

Yep, cringing to think of 5 acres of grass to mow! One of my brothers has about 4 acres; I spent part of my time with him thinking up ideas for him to eliminate at least an acre of lawn grass and instead to create a meadow. Better for the wildlife, better for the environment (less gasoline required for his lawnmower) and giving him more time to enjoy life. He spends part of every day for 8 months on top of his riding mower :(

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Yeah, DH spends a fair amount of time on the riding mower too. I have been thinking of ways to cut down on the area too.

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Joan, I can email you some baby trees and bushes for your new yard.....

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Wanda, that would be great! Then I can download them wherever I want them. Much easier than digging a hole. :)

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

That's what I was thinking Joan! lol I mean, think of how much money we'd all save in postage???

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

All we need is a virtual garden where we control the rain & sun and never a snow storm... No bugs & no husband telling me to come in & make dinner!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

....if you make your family save the chopsticks from the Chinese food to stake up seedlings. (Guess shere we went for dinner?)

Holland, MI(Zone 6a)

That's good Frog.

BIRD

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

i haven't done that one yet frog but it does sound like a good idea. :)

you know your a gardener if:

your friends depend on you to remind them when they need to do something in there gardens.

you look outside on these cold fall mornings and hope that your annuals are going to be there just one more day.

you don't want to remove your annuals because those few flowers brighten your day so.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

You know you are a gardener ir:

You have this thread on your watch list and are avidly watching it so as to pick up everyone else's bad habits!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

debi_z, you are so right about not wanting to dig the annuals. I went out this morning prepared to dig them up, but even though the plants are brown and yucky, there's a few flowers on some that are hanging on for dear life. I didn't have the heart to dig them up.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

You know you are a gardener if you go on a long journey, and when you get your photos back, realize that almost the only photos you took are of plants and gardens, not friends or family :( (I got many photos of my brothers' gardens, none of my brothers or their families!)

Thumbnail by lupinelover

Ok, I have to know, What is the bathtub used for in your brothers garden? I noticed it is by the water spigot. (of course).

Davena

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Outdoor baths, of course ;D

(Really and truly, they installed an outdoor shower so when my brother gets all dirty working outside in the summer, he can clean off before jumping into the pool without tracking all the dirt into the house. They needed a way to easily funnel the dirty water into their treatment system rather than allowing the run-off into the new garage, the installation of which made the dirty brother to begin with!)

But isn't an old bathtub outside an outrageous idea? He and I share the same sense of humor. And don't ya love the flamingo by-standers???

Oh my goodness yes. They are cute! The bath tub is a great idea!

Davena

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Hey, it would go great with the outhouse we had when I was a kid. We took baths in a tub in the kitchen after Mom heated the water. I think I prefer my bathtubs indoors....LOL

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Wandasflowers any time any day if Linda wants to work for me in my yard I will cook my own dinner and hers to.

Cooking is childs play it's the clean up after that I duck.

You may be a gardener if you find your self checking your tomatoes every day to make sure some sneak thief has not visited and picked one of your favorites.Ernie

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I keep eyeing the old outhouse at the farm. Would love
to move it into town and use it as a tool shed.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

............I stopped at a Micky D's tonight for a cuppa coffee to warm up,it was a beautiful scooter ride tonight...heading home at dusk into a full harvest moon hanging low in the sky.
........While I was sipping my coffee I wondered if the stirrers were too small for plant markers...if I can write reeel tiny ...lol
