Am starting a journal of what we did:

Oakland, CA(Zone 9b)

Our garden beds were installed in phases, so the front yard is now 18 months old, the side beds exactly a year old, and the backyard a few months short of a year. We may have to sell the house due to an uncertain family situation so we overplanted with container plants to get a lush look. This year is one for some pruning of exuberant plants, removing ones that didn't do well and trying some new things in their place.

I hadn't gardened before but found I really enjoy it. My husband, who is NOT handy, did a very fine job on constructing most of the hardscape we needed. Our lot has a double slope, both side to side and front to back, so we needed to keep everything from sliding downhill when being watered, LOL!

Now that summer seems to have finally arrived, we are taking a break and enjoying our patio (shown in the subalbum 'Backyard'). Next year we'll finish off the last part of the backyard! A lot of work, but we're glad we did it.

Here's a link to our Yahoo photo album which I reorganized recently. 'Garden' shows the front and side yards; the subalbum 'Backyard' showcases the back flower beds my husband built, and the recently re-opened storage shed which became a lanai:

TwinLakesChef, you did a lot of rock and hardscape work. Looks very nice. Would like to visit in person.

jkom51, Enjoyed looking at your album. After doing so much work it would seem a shame to have to leave it.

Thank you rutholive; the door is always open to a fellow garden lover.

Just love before and after pics; it never lets you forget where you started from and how far you have gone.

I wish I had done some "before" photos. We've been here for about 9 years, and there was nothing growing, we've got tons of stuff, but like others have mentioned, no "rhyme or reason" to it, just willy nilly, I like this, so I'm planting it.
I'm trying to get more organized this year with the beds I have, and going to plan, hopefully with the advice of DG Friends, the gardens I want to create next.

I have been in my house for a little over a year and did not start to work on the garden untill this spring so right now I have mostly plants, not a real garden, but it is getting there, with the help of all the co-ops I am in! I will take some photos tomorrw and post them. this is a great idea!! I love looking at all the beautiful gardens you have all created. It gives me hope.

My garden will be 3 years old on Aug 1st. Here is a picture of the veggie garden part. This was mid June, now it's a jungle! LOL...
