Doris, you are pretty cool yourself! And about Simon's reading book, did I miss something?

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I don't know, I think it may be a British thing. BTW, Thanks

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

The boys in my wee fella's school have got past 'bad' already, (maybe they were just scared that we parents would use it in its original context), so they've moved on to a Turkish word "KRASS" !!!, and if something is really KRASS then it's FETTKRASS, which means basically FAT (super) KRASS (happening)..... and here's me old fuddy-duddy thinking that 'cool' was still 'cool' ... but to my saving grace, the wee girls in his class use 'cool' all day and in almost every sentence, or wherever they can answer with words with no more than four letters.
Och! Och! Och! why am I so old and feeling out of touch with my kid, but the wee girls in his class think I'm 'cool' 'cos I wear a skirt sometimes . . . . OHHHH! the pain, the pain !!!

Wintermoor

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh Winter, You are hilarious!!! Aren't Scotsmen supposed to be stoic and grim?

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

My grandfather was a Scotsman and he was NEVER stoic and grim. He was like a house a fire. All over the place and sooo funny.

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Wintermoor cool is still cool in my book!!

mind you simon has a new one!! Everything is wicked!!! which also means cool, top!!!

btw wintermoor love the knees ;)!!!!! LOL

Aimee - simons reading book has also gone missing. I have turned the house upside down twice and nothing!! now I have had to pay for a new one!!! arrgghhhh

I think I am going to emigrate and live in a mud hut all by myself in the middle of the African savannah!! :)

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

aye but fat is spelt phat

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

Sounds like your wee girl is looking for another big payday lol
After you've bought Simon a new reading book, the old one will appear on the kitchen table ... mysteriously ;-)

Wintermoor

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I know wintermoor, but she isnt going to get one!!! and I d rather pay £2.50 than £40!! LOL

Weymouth, Dorset, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

I've just had to pay for Jazz's library book that dissapeared.Turned the whole house upside down.
We lost one before, paid for it, the a month later ,found it in amonst her other books. How many times I'd checked that book case I don't know!!...
We'll be banned from the library soon if we loose any more.I sculk in there now as it is,waiting for alarms to go off and fingers to point wailing 'lost book..lost book'

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

You're not the only culprit sue. I regularly forget to take them back and have lost two or three :O (always paid of course - just SO irritating)

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I wasn't going to comment about the Scotsmen in my family, as they mostly weren't socially acceptable. But neither were they stoic and grim. Indeed, we could have relaxed if they had been, instead of so full of mischief. Mine, too, were all over and unpredictable. The poor women could never get far scolding or punishing the children, because the adult men were equally errant. And I had a few female ancestors with as much spirit as the men. Rollicking good fun!

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I only had seen a picture of my great grandfather who looked very stern indeed!

Maybe in those days they didn't smile when photos were taken. ( probably didn't own a kilt either).I never heard great grandma laugh, but had a gentle smile. Your kin sound like more fun!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Doris, you are right, most of those old pictures were so severe looking. I have some of women in my family, always thought they looked so bitter. I decided they were still mad at their husbands after the difficulty of childbirth in those days. Some of those women look downright dangerous. Like, don't get within reach of that rolling pin.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Sue, won't they give you your money back if you return the book after finding it? They will, here.
Aimee, where were your kin from? Mine lived in Roxburghshire.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Whatever I am doing at the time has something to do with what I lose. If I want to take pictures it's the camera or the charger. If I'm gardening it's the tools. If I'm watering it's the hose connections. And etc. It's usually something that Bobbi can find with no trouble. I think she hides stuff just to make me look bad. LOL

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I used to think my dh used to hide things just to make me look like I was loosing my marbles!! but then I found I was losing my marbles anyway!! :S:D

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

On Thursday, I was told that I am 'awesome' (by an adult no less!) Although he is a 5th grade teacher, so he picks up all the kids' slang. It was very peculiar hearing that from an adult, tho ;D

columbia, SC(Zone 8b)

i have misplaced keys often also.
Once when my children were small I lost keys to my car and didn't have a extra set and my hubby had to be at a important appt., he had to tear apart ignition to get car started so he could make it to this appt.
later we found the keys in the dryer[ where one of my young sons had put them]lol!!!!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Lupinelover, be afraid, be very afraid. That is a man who spends way too much time in the company of young people. He should know to tell a lady she is fabulous, or wonderful, or very interesting, or mysterious, but not awesome. I agree, it's peculiar coming from an adult.

Doris, I haven't gotten enough information to actually nail us down. One of Daddy's sisters did get it all together, or said she did, way back thirty years ago, but she wanted each of us to pay her $150 to access the information, so I still don't know much. It was a surprise to me to learn we were from Scotland, as I had always thought we were from France, Ireland, Canada, Germany, any place but Scotland. And that particular aunt is given to embellishing things to make us look high society, so I don't think she would have included an accurate genealogy if it happened we came from the wrong side of the buggy tracks.

It has always been somewhere in the dark recesses of my cranium that we were descended from pirates.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Aimee, I'm kind of afraid mine were involved in border rieving! (spelled right?)
It's fun to get into searching ones family. Computers have done much to make it easier.

Bremerton, WA(Zone 8b)

Reading this thread was way too much fun!!! Like Georgirdclay, what ever I'm doing and have a need for, is what ends up missing at the time.

:) I believe I must be peculiar...LOL At 47, I'm still saying Awesome, totally awesome, way cool, key and other such slang. Have no idea why, it's just things I've always said. I do use Geeze Louise, Holy wow and Lord, love a duck a lot too!! Though peculiar is used a lot meaning odd and weird, it can also mean special or different...hahaha....adding that is like trying to sugar coat a pill..lol Thanks everyone for such fun reading!

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

Glad I'm not the only one.
39 yrs old and I use some of the phrases mentioned here. Always have, and can't be bothered to change my speech patterns to accommodate my age. I'm really not willing to accommodate my age at all if I can help it ... lol!

Cheri'

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Good ideas, girls, because when you change, you switch to such dated sayings as "oh, mercy", "mercy sakes", "lands", "glory be", "heavens to Betsy", "oh, gee", "oh, my stars", "I swanee" and on like that.

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Wawild I dont think you are any different. I speak to alot of Americans and it is a word I hear all the time!! LOL If fact even I say it now sometimes!!

My children, my youngest in particular thinks that everything is wicked!! :)

Jesteburg-Wiedenhof, Germany(Zone 8a)

These words will pop up in almost every conversation. Do you remember in the 60's when James Brown had a 'Mean Machine'? meaning his excellent band of course, but if you took it literally, then it probably meant and 'Average Engine' löl (that's a German lol ;-)

Some words used out of context by the kids of yesteryear and today??? Fabulous (fab), Fantastic, Terrific, Groovy, Cool, Bad, Wicked, Burnin', Hot, Swingin' .... but do you know what we would be without the 'Fab Four', A 'Fantastic Curry', a 'Terrific Beer', a 'Groovy Song' a 'Cool Weekend', a 'Bad Band' with a 'Wicked Drummer' and a 'Burning Guitarist' playing some 'Hot Stuff'which was 'Swingin All Night Long'?? BORED!!!

;-)

Wintermoor

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

ROFL Wintermoor!

unfortunatly I am too young to remember the 60s but the last 4 days have been swinging, groovy, cool, wicked and bad!;):D

Bremerton, WA(Zone 8b)

LOL...man i had forgotten some of those,,hahaha such fun remembering..thanks Wintermore. Psilo...yep, wicked...forgot that one on my use a lot list...heehehe

krass and fettkrass..i like them too! We have many 14 to 16 year old neighborhood kids visit us a lot. We play a lot of vollyball, badminton and horseshoes...draws the kids like flys... can't wait to see what they say when use them. I'll start a new craze here in my little rural area.

Have to ask...what about Dude...everyone here (not me this time) call everyone dude...guy or gal, they are all dudes. It that one being used much in your areas of the world?

This thread has been so wicked cool to read..lol (couldn't resist)

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

No wawild in the UK people get called pal, mate, pet, love, duck, friend. Names such as dude, guy or gal are far too way out for us reserved Brits!! :))
