Here's a good explanation of DNS, DNS caching and how it all works together (or doesn't!): http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/answerstips/story/0,24330,3384507,00.html

GW proves once again that she is invaluable and unparalled at explicating the inexplicable.

Thanks AGAIN!

Adam.

Oh Dave, please don't EVER think you are underqualified or underappreciated. We think you're the BEST! And please know how much we appreciate all that you do for us. Hugs to you and your staff!

Phwew! I finally was able to get in just now from home. I still can't get in from my office though. Maybe has something to do with the networking there. Don't know, but I'm glad it works from home again.

I have hundreds of messages that show as new updates, but I'll work through them a bit at a time.

Thanks Dave!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Re "new": a few months ago after some site difficulties, it seems as though all threads showed up as "new reply" or something to that effect. Is that happening again?

The site is still very intermittent for me: often it just goes blank when I try to go elsewhere, backing out and trying again sometimes works.

I hope that you haven't posted here for a while means you are getting some (extremely well-deserved) rest!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Whew! Finally crawling back in...At least the yard got mowed and weed eated...talked with Yardbird and Lisa on the phone this morning just to get some DG withdrawal support.

Thanks so much Dave,I knew that you were moving Heaven and Earth to get us back on again.

Lisa and I even pictured you on a plane to Knoxville...tells you how much we know about computers!

So glad to be back! And many thanks to the best webmaster on the Net!!!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I hate to take the chance of giving the webmaster a swelled head, but I am constantly impressed by the amount of work and patience that goes into even day to day handling of DG. I cannot imagine how you could be any better qualified, Dave. My hat is off to you.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Dave, you did a good yob!!Thank you!
My puter "watched"it a little,in best way: slow loading and fast loading. You must have worked like a hmm..waterbuffalo.
Thanks!!!

I am continuing to have modem problems which happened to conincide with the site going down. Dave, I thought everything was bigger in Texas (excluding bandwith)? :)

(Zone 5a)

Dave I know this has cause one big headache for you and I hope the rest goes smooth from here on, good luck.

This is the firt time I have been able to get here since early Thursday morning and I am so glad to be able to check on some things I needed information on.

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

I'm still having extreme trouble navigating round the site.
When I click on the normal links to take me in and out of threads half the time they freeze up and I have to go out of DG and then back in again.
Is anyone else experiencing this?

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

In fact I had three attempts to post that before it finally went through

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Sorry everyone had trouble, I was busy selling plant material last few days so missed all the "fun". We had Grand Openning of our Garden Center yesterday. Up 150% over
last year. Also Farmers Market first day yesterday, great day, beautful weather, (Sun & 65º). Probably twice as good as first day last year. More in Market Growers Forum.

I have had some freezeups since the site reopened. Not certain but it seems to be a photo thing again. Perhaps the scan of the photos to correct the IE problem is not in place now?

That's right, Zanymuse, the scan of the photos is definitely currently disabled. Point me to the picture in question, and I can fix it directly.

Basically the same ones as before the fix.

Do you want links to the others as well?

Thank you so much for all your efforts, Dave.
This was an awesome crash, and I think you 'rock' as a Webmaster!

Hope you're able to get some rest real soon!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Although I am able to get on, most of the time I find that it does the freeze thing. Often, when I respond and try to go back or even when I try to open a post, it appears that the browser is trying but can't find the site, or can't load it. If I hit "stop", it will sometimes appear right away, but not always. I am not trying to view many photos or to post any, so it's happening on text here.

(Zone 5a)

I can get on but when I answer a thread and then try to go back to DG main page it just acts as if it's still trying to find it but never does, so I have to click on the address again to get in.

Yes, I'm experiencing the freeze phenomenon, too, and it is not related to photographs. There does not seem to be a pattern -- it's random, but frequent.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I just got back on this morning. I know I was seeing pictures today, now they're all gone. Sigh ~

Edited to say they're back, keeps you on your toes, LOL

Tried on Friday, an error came. Tried again this morning, ditto. I was worried. So sent a message to a friend. No reply yet. Glad that DG was "lost and found", much to my relief, this afternoon. But I notice that many of my threads are showing a "yes' sign at the left where there should have been a "no". I think those things will be set right once the entire thing is restored. Must be a lot of headache for Dave, these surprise crashes would give.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Dinu! I was going to copy this thread and send it to you but I see you were able to get on.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

So far my only problem has been that it won't load a page of threads back from the front page on that forum. Also found a lot of watched threads this morning when I was able to find time to get online and when I clicked on "skip to new" it didn't skip as far as it should have. Back a long ways. I can deal with that though. I'm sure glad you were able to get us back on okay Dave. Bet you are in need of a good long rest. I can deal with little problems, just as long as I have "Daves".

Today, DG won't load via IE at all. I'm using Netscape now. The site loads okay on NS, but when I click on forums and individual threads, many times the screen either goes blank, or won't load at all (receiving, receiving). Double-clicking sometimes will bring up the page.

I'm just reporting these changes in the hope that the information will be helpful -- am so grateful for all the work that Dave has done to rebuild the site after the crash, and for the ongoing labors that keep this such a wonderful place to be. :)

If it's any help, this is the message I received when I was finally able to log on from IE, after a wait of four minutes to load: network error (-3171)

It's a bandwidth issue, whiterose (and others experiencing slow or non-existent page loads). Just try again, is all we can do. My internet link is 100% saturated, all the time.

dave

Dave does this also include BGI Froum? I can get on BGI but can't read any of the forums.

Thanks
Glory

Yes, Glory, the BGI forums are hosted on the same server as DG, so my problems are their problems.

Thank you for explaining, Dave. I so appreciate all the care and skill you bring to running this wonderful site.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Whats a BGI forum???

jules: BGI is a "customer" of mine. I provide discussion forums for their group. They are not affiliated with DG.

Dave

Oh, OK! Thought I might be missing out on another great site by Dave, LOL

Thanks, Julie

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

The new messages, as well as the skip to new are both weird for me. When something is indicated as new responses, I click on it. If it does come up (often I lose my patience and back out before the thread loads -- some of them take more than 5 minutes) it goes all the way to the end of the thread, and I have to page up to see any/all new responses.

Dave, I hope you are able to get some rest in! These are frustrating problems for us, but your health is important too! (including mental health!)
