Loved reading about these CBs I planted some seeds a few years ago, and still get occasional volunteers. Love 'em!

Lav, to answer your question, the dumb bunnies around here do nibble on poisonous plants. I have no clue if they sicken from the experience or not, but I have seen them chewing on my hellebores, castor beans (when they were small enough), rhubarb leaves, you name it. I have also seen squirrels busily gathering the ripe beans from my CBs, but no idea if they just store them or eat them. Maybe that is why I still get volunteers every year.

Birds have very different metabolisms than mammals; many things which are poisonous for mammals are not to birds (and vice versa).

I haven't seen any signs of raccoons or possums taking nibbles on them, those are the only other wild herbavores in my garden. Thankfully, no deer.

The public herb garden where I volunteer does grow these, but far away from the walkways so that inquisitive children cannot sample them.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

They were in the Dahlia bed which is full of horse manure, and it is pretty moist soil.I grew them once in my leach feild and the got bigger than that! And I didn't start them in pots,I direct seeded them.......

Castor Beans are indeed toxic to the fatal degree but I've never known an animal to eat them. The famous Castor Oil is made from them you know. So is a poison used by the underworld to get rid of enemies. It leaves NO trace unless the lab knows to look for it. I read that dead occurs hours or days after the injection of just a tiny amount of the toxic ingredient and is usually attributed to natural causes, mostly cardiac arrest. The info is one the internet for those interested.
I have volunteer plants all over the yard since I don't get all of the seed pods removed each fall. Sometimes I move them to new locations if they are in the path of the mower. Fairly successful at that if I take as much soil as possible and don't disturb the roots very much. I use large size loppers or a hand saw to cut ours off at the soil line.
There are other ways to run off moles/voles, etc. if you are afraid of CBs. Well used cat litter applied either on top of the soil or into the runs/mounds will cause the critters to leave permenantly as the smell seems to stay in the soil for a VERY LONG TIME. I've never had a problem with it burning plant roots but then I don't put it in direct contact with the roots either. NOISE is something else that will make the moles/voles leave. Like firecrackers exploded in the run, lawn mowers driven over the area daily or more often, loud music, especially with a frequent strong bass beat, played over the run(i.e. boom boxes),smoke bombs like you get for 4th of July dropped into the run, and garlic grown in the flower/veggie beds and left until late fall or even permenantly.
GOD bless and keep each and all of you and may your yardening/gardening season be top notch.
