How many ponders are out there????????? List your names.

Tiffin, OH(Zone 6a)

my pond is a random shaped 12'x12'x3'deep(looks like a square with one corner cut off)with a liner, four years old with goldfish and a few small koi, hardy lilies and marginals. Also have some water lettuce and hyacinths and submerged oxiginators and several frogs.Am fighting greenwater this year(maybe the drought and heat we've had?)It has a small waterfall and is edged with reclaimed sandstone sidewalk pieces. The landscaping continues to evolve-are gardeners ever satisfied to just leave it alone??Have lost several fish and a bunch of the hyacinth to "critters" this year(again- the drought I think)Live trapped a possum and a coon so far and we are in town.I like the wildlife but that $50 dollar fish dinner with a salad on me was just too much-they got relocated out in the country by a creek!!MW

If a muck bucket counts I have one.. I'm sure there will be more :)

Before we pursue the idea of a specialized trading forum, have you checked out your personal tradelist pages and tried to use them? There's a built-in section for pond plants. If you list your plants for trade there, it'll make it very easy for others to spot what you have available and/or are wanting.

I know there are some quirky aspects to the tradelist pages that can make them a bit difficult to use. BUT if you'll tell us what you'd like to see changed, we can twist Dave's arm to make them more workable...and in the long-run I think you'll be happier with the tradelists than a forum. They're easier to search for particular plants, and to keep track of who has what.

New Albany, MS(Zone 7a)

There are many times that a person really doesn't know what they are looking for or even what they have in trade at that moment, so doing a search for individual plants is kinda hard. I know many times, I may have something available that someone wants, but really didn't think about it, until I saw were they were looking for it or that they had something that I just had to have. When you have as many plants as some of us have, it is hard to list everything all the time.

I find it very difficult to go looking through pond peoples pages, since until now it was hard to know who exactely who all the pond were.

A good example, I posted a picture of a lily that I have. Was contacted by someone that had been looking for that lily for some time. I went out and looked and was able to get a division off it for her. I would have never tought about looking to see if she wanted it. I have many things available that people want, but did not get reply's until I happen to post a pic of it. I know I personally have a hard time with this.

Hey guys, I am a ponder too. It's been a year this month and we still love it. We started with a couple of small 5" Koi and they became very tame and ate out of my DH's hand...but we had a visit from a Heron and he ate all our fish. We bought a couple more, they got ate...then we bought some 3" goldfish for 50 cents and they are still with us. I have a male and female Red Slider turtle and 1 or 2 new frogs from tadpoles.
DH didn't want the pond, thought it would be too much upkeep....guess who's pond it belongs to now? lol

Donna

Me too!!!!

Pennsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

I have a pond too. It's a natural farm pond fed by a winter spring. We have a couple hundred goldfish, water lilies, hyacinths and frogs.

Smyrna, TN

New to DG but please add my name to the ponders list. I dug my pond 3 years ago during spring break (teacher) and I love it every day. Nothing and I mean NOTHING gives me greater joy. My husband thinks I am nuts. I am planning a bigger one or would like to come up with a way to enlarge the one I have. Current pond is 4'x6' and 31/2' deep. bio filter only - it flows from an old time water pump - a few goldfish who made babies the first year but none the next two years, too many water lilies, a lotus underplanted with sweet flag (at least that was the name on the plant tag at Home Depot) Water stays super clear and bonus, I don't have to leave out water for the cats any more!

I'm a newbie at ponding.
I have Koi & goldfish. Have more fish than I do plants.
I need more plants-to help shade my fish.
I love watching my water pups play.

HI PLANTVAMP & CHRISTMASCACTUS, JUST PUT IN A POND A FEW WEEKS AGO AND NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NOW. ITS SMALL 7X8 WITH 3FOOT CENTER DEEP.ANY IDEAS TO DO NOW WOULD BE GREAT!HAVE SMALL FOUNTAIN IN AND WATER CLEAR. WHAT CAN I PUT IN NOW IN ZONE 8? ALREADY WANT TO DO A LARGER ONE AND MY DH JUST LOOKS AT ME IN AMAZMENT!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Welcome to Dave's Garden you newbies! This spring lots of us will have plenty to trade or SASE with you so don't worry about your plants right now. You will find the people here generous to a fault and sweet too for the most part.

plantvamp, it looks like you have a balanced pond. I don't think that I would do a thing to upset that balance as that seems to be hard for most to achive. Do a bigger pond elsewhere would be my advise. IMHO anyway.

Grandview, TX(Zone 7b)

Weedlady,
You need to plan a visit an hour south around May! Come by for a visit sometime and see my ponds. May is when I repot and clean out the ponds and I am sure we can find something that you just have to have, hehe.

Just found this thread today. DW thinks I spend too much time reading posts in Dave's. My little pond will need some spring cleanout as the snowplow came before I got the reflector sticks in the ground. Rocks on one side and liner got pushed in. Frozen solid now. I dug this one 2 yrs ago but would still like one that would take a backhoe to dig. Waiting for spring. Frank

Hello fellow ponders lol.We have a 3/4 acre pond it is very well stocked(Bass, perch, and such). It is a very happy pond it is attractive to many turtles, birds, frogs and plant life.We have many different types of Lillys.Sometimes not often we get big flocks of Egerts and sometimes great Blue Herones (plz excuse my spelling). As I said we have many different lillys, cattails ,horestails, ect. My husband is in charge of the ecosystem of our pond and will not let me put goldfish in there. But he is very good at it and I am wondering if he has named all the fish yet lol.We caught a 55lb. catfish from it last year, what a relife I know catfish don't eat ppl but am glad he is in our bellys now lol.But we are planning on a small small pond so I can raise the fish I like.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Besides my front pond, would a half barrel count if I threw a few fish in? Maybe a water can fountain? OK, I won't count it.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

LOL golddog.

Frankay, It is a good thing that you are at DG and not some of the other sites that are on the net. Have you explained that to your DW? Buy some plants on here in one of the co-ops that she loves and she will think differently of your time spent. LOL

Annabelle 15 Checking In... What will make this winter go away........... I want to play with my pond, and see my fish
Winter here in Michigan sure puts a halt on ponding.......

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

My fish are asking for food right now. It is unseasonably warm here! Not getting much progress on our hole in the ground for the koi since it has been raining too much lately.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Wow,its nice to see all these new people!!!

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

Water gardens are wonderful. I opted to pay someone else to put my 800 gal. pond in. Three guys spent 8 hours digging, laying in the liners, putting in the biofalls and skimmer, then laying down rock around the sides. I would have died doing that by myself (I still value my marriage, so I wouldn't ask my husband to help me with such a project). We videotaped the process so we could maybe try it ourselves the next time. It hasn't taken me long to fill the pond up with all sorts of water loving plants. And I even managed to get a couple of butterfly larval plants in there :) (Canna flaccida for the skippers, and Bacopa carolinensis? and Bacopa monnerei? for the White Peacocks) I found some pictures from before and after we installed it. It's amazing the difference it made in the landscape--and it only had like three plants in it when the picture was taken. Now we have mutitudes of fish, several species of frogs, tons of toads and lizards, a couple of snakes (none poisonous), and heavens knows what else that we haven't seen. It's wonderful to sit down to dinner, light the candles, crack the window , watch the underwater lights glow and flicker as the water moves, listen to the frog chorus and the water splashing. It's about as close to heaven on earth as one can get in my yard. I'm thinking about how to incorporate another pond in the back yard. Got plenty of room back there since we didn't want/have a pool :) I'll scan and post my pictures soon to share with you all.

Ohh ohhhh Butterflygardnr is now getting ponditis. It won't be long before she is in the full throes of it. LOL Welcome to ponding Butterfly.

Don't you know it!

Count me in as a ponder!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

It is an easy thing to get addicted to.

Montezuma, NM(Zone 5b)

I've had my pond for nearly 10 years. It started with a small pond in a home I rented. The lily and iris' have been with me since (and divided many times). I've moved balanced water from that small pond to an even smaller one I kept in an apartment. I now have 5 koi, 1 8" gold fish and two smaller goldfish. I think I still have a polywog, maybe two. They all live happily in a 400 gal stock tank that I just this summer put in the ground. I moved water from my last house to the same tank at my current home. That was two years ago. The water was transported by 50 gal drums lined with 55 gal. trash can liners. Last summer I went wading in someone's pond to get more starts for my pond. Quite an experience to sink to hip level in a well aged pond!! Guess you could say I'm hooked.

This is summer 2002, the plants have finally grown and we also had to put a temporary net across the pond, as we have been having a Heron visit us and he ate all 5 of our Koi. He now can't eat anything. lol
I have also changed a few plants again, as I am trying to find what I like around the pond.

Have had several small ponds in the garden and on the deck in the past, but now our real pond project will get underway this year. This pic was just taken at our new venture at End of Earth Road. Should be great hunting and fishing both in the pond and Sideling Creek. Am very anxious to begin gardening in a whole new environment.

This was a few weeks ago, cold but no snow at the time. Need to make a trip to our local Pond Garden shop to start filling this up. About 15' deep at the deepest part.

I'll add my name to the list--I have a 5x7x24" pond with a 3 tier waterfall--no fish (I travel for a living so am not here to feed)--I have sweetflag Iris-- Louisana Black Iris--various underwater plants and have ordered more for this spring. I always have a resident frog or two or three. Not much luck with water lilies as the pond only gets about 4 hrs of sun--had one bloom once. Will a lotus bloom with shade??? I am in Zone 6 (PA)

Montezuma, NM(Zone 5b)

Hi Sky,
I started looking for water lilys that get by with less sun cause I didn't want to give them up! I didn't get a lot of blooms where I moved the pond last year. I'm not familiar with this website but it does list several lilys that bloom with less sun. Any comments on this vendor? www.waterplants.com/cgibin/db.cgi?RED+HARDY+LILY&&sf1=Category

I will try that site--I really have only been dealing with Lilipons. Thanks for the info

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Let's see if I can get a hyperlink to work: http://www.waterplants.com/ Since we didn't have them in the Watchdog I added them here: http://gardenwatchdog.com/c/2471/ (thanks for the tip-off!)

If anyone has dealt with this company (or any of the other 100+ sources of water plants we have listed: http://gardenwatchdog.com/vbc/1/) please be sure to add your comments and ratings. What you know will help others, and positive comments are really appreciated by these companies (constructive comments are also appreciated - they can't fix the problem if they don't know about it!) If you know of other mail-order sources we don't have listed, let us know.

Hi...we have been ponding for 8 years and now are up to 7 but most are kids pools 12 ft round 18 in deep now. We sell plants on eBay and at our local flea market. We are
moving to our 4 acre piece of land in the next 2 months and will be growing and selling water lilies and all forms of
pond plants there. It is exciting...and lots and lots of work. It is exciting to see so many ponders at Dave's Garden.

I am new to this site and will enjoy getting to know everyone! We are in South Carolina, Zone 8...where it has actually FROZE this year for over 10 days.
