Just my roses, my irises, my daffs, daylilies, cannnas..fortunately not all my cannas....but some! It's not supposed to do this Weez!! I'm just walking the floor, chewing my fingernails......but, it's supposed to warm up today, and keep the trend till the weekend, then rain. I want to feed my roses, but I don't want to shck them anymore than they already are, poor babies! I feel like I'm gonna explode!! Oh, well...there's a bedroom upstairs I need to finish painting....not exactly one of my favorite things......oh phooey...might as well quit caterwalling and get on with the task at hand....
"eyes"
Do you have dirty finger nails?
It's ok eyes, we got a foot of snow overnight. I'm cheerfully puttering around, made out one more seed order, cleared a space for the humonguous calla lily on the backroom window sill, doing laundry and paying that the 50 degrees forecast for Friday is a keeper!!!
eyes: So sorry to hear that you've got plants in danger. Could you cover them with row cover, or is blowing like the dickens. It's always so exciting when those perennials and bulbs start popping out of the ground. It heralds the season. Those sudden storms are such an assault on them, but I think nature allows for it. I've had similar circumstances and only suffered leave nipped by frost, but the plant survived.
I do a lot of straw mulching around here, and every spring, the tulips poke up through the straw, and it's such a temptation to uncover them, but I know it could be another couple weeks before it is safe. It's become less tempting since I've been starting so many seeds in the basement and shed. Now I'm too busy to rush spring outdoors!
I hope all of you folks who experienced the storms have good luck with your perennials.
I to am ready for spring but we have a foot of snow on the ground and I just checked and it is 6 degree's tonight. I did repot my Brug's into bigger pot, yesterday and it was so nice to have my hands in dirt!
I usually can't keep nails in the growing season unless I wear gloves of some sort. My favorite glove for working in the dirt is those heavier weight disposable vinyl ones. They last for quite a while really. Even the light weight one last for a day or more. I buy a box of a hundred gloves in the spring and they usually make it thru the season. I also have heavier ones like Dollar General sells for $1 a pair that work well too. If I don't keep my hands covered my hands get so dry they turn black and I have to use something like a pumice stone, emery boards, or fine sandpaper to get the dead skin off. I use heavy duty creams and even mink oil or olive oil on my hands many times a day and still have dry skin. I think it has to do with the soil pulling all the moisture out of my skin.
Gloves also protect the hands from small sharp objects in the soil and possible fungus and bacterial infections. Not only that, you can drop everything and go somewhere anytime without being concerned about the appearance of your hands. I really get embarrassed when I'm sitting in church and realize how bad my hands look sometimes.
Leaflady: There is a cotton knit glove with rubber on the fingers and palms that has become my favorite garden glove. The knit cuffs keep soil out of the fingers, and the snug fits keep the gloves on my hands. For years they were used here in the fish canneries and boats, but now I see them in garden catalogs. They be a welcome addition to your collection for those jobs that are a bit hard on the latex variety.
No dirt under my nails now-i bit them all off over the weekend at wrestling!! ;] They sure feel better now!!!
I've been potting some stuff and digging in the ground, so I got dirty nails. I love digging in the dirt too. Will somebody tell me about this pallet compost bin. Been thinking I want to start a compost pile. The compost doesn't come out the spaces between the boards? Tell me how to do it please.
