Plant with the large spiky silver leaves is cardoon which I started from seed. It is a nice mix with the Redhead Coleus which I propagate by cuttings. The orange and yellow pansies and the dusty miller are my own seed starts as well
Plant propagation discussions-April 2019
Sounds like you scored Gypsi. I didn't even go to the big August plant sale this year, first time ever.Today is senior discount day at the local mom and pop nursery, I'll go because I get one free 99 cent plant. LOL
Keith, that is beautiful, your flowers are flowers we can only grow here from Feb. through April then the heat kills them off.
Just gorgeous Keith. Nice to see what cool temperatures and good care can grow.
Zinnias struggling since moles and snakes are tunneling. Buttermilk racer with an anole it caught, being chased by a common yellow green bellied water snake. Buttermilk racers have large polka dots of blue& gray...distinctive. Plant protection under the tin roof...the difference in a little water and no water. So dusty.
Thanjs ladies.
Change of pace for a few days.
Wendy went to Kenora to help Chevonne out for a few days so good time for me to build a chicken coop for Tennille's kids. Kira is in 4H chicken club. Club supplied a "chicken tractor" for the summer months but soon they are going to require insulation and bigger quarters so thst is grandpa's job
Wow Gypsi, that makes my coop look pretty boring. Very colourful.
My 10 year old granddaughter painted it. She was quite colorful. We miss her very much.
Beautiful plants Keith
I'd love to have chickens, but I don't need another animal to concern about when we travel. Neighbors have some so I at least get to hear them. Nice coop Gypsi.
Beautiful flowers Keith, what is the red flowered one in the hanging basket in last photo?
Thanks guys. Sherri, that hanging flower is Bonfire Begonia. It is a tuber that I bring in and overwinter in peat moss in the basement.
Thanks Keith, I looked it up, got excited when I saw zone 9-11, but read a FL review and said it doesn't like our humidity and will perish in the summer. Sure is a beautiful plant.
Wonderful photo's all
Keith pretty and artist grouping colors ,,really nice ,,
Kitt cute snakes ,,
Gypsi memory remembering folks that have have come and gone ,,oh my ,,,
Her baby sister started pre-k this week, and her mom dug through my facebook and shared old videos of Iris, the one we miss. Grief comes in waves, mostly I work and am fine.
Preying mantis on Asclepius Tuberosa
Guinea Fowl in my front yard, heading out of my path to hunt grasshoppers on the east side
Morte D'peachtree. It threw a lot of fruit last year, way more than usual, and was 8 years old. The trunk part I left feels alive.sort of
Gypsi Nice photo shots
I am working on plants for next year ...
I am juggling. I need to cut chrysanthemum starts so the plants can fill back out before bloom time, and start fall seeds. But rainwater is so good for cuttings and seeds. Got about 1/16th of an inch today, first in about a month.
That would brighten a cloudy ay
Thanks Gypsi. And we are definitely getting our share of those lately. Fall is in the air here. Forecasted highs do not hit 20°C in the next 2 weeks. Kira's chickens will soon be needing that insulated coop we are constructing. Below is a peak at that project. Shell is complete and we are now concentrating on insulating and interior sheating. There will be an interior partition clad with chicken wire between the two windows to include a feed storage area and hinged access to the nest boxes. The far end has a 4foot wide by 2 foot high door that lifts up and out to shovel out the poop. Tennille is going to add some trim and a coat of grey paint similar to the garage behind it.
Ventilation is super important Keith. Cold doesn't kill as much as humid cold kills. There are designs for the north on backyardchickens.com
We get some bitter cold here once in a while, although below zero is rare. I heat the water bucket waterer with an aquarium heater, and put pondliner over my screened windows.
Biggest problem is humidity from the hens breathing, and keeping water thawed so they can drink. And keeping electric cords out of peck zone.
94* feels like 102* outside, I noticed the fennel volunteer sprouts are rising, so I need to get the other winter plants in the ground- hoping my dill sprouts show up, but I did toss their dirt around a lot. Took Lucy to the garden for a 10 min visit- when she got back to the house she stretched out panting really hard, as if she did more than prowl around in shadows, chuckl. Like me that a/c can spoil ya. No breeze to speak of, 2 mph from east...
84 with a heat index of 88 here, sun is out off and on, and it's very humid. I cut my hardy mums back and started 11 pots of cuttings in the shade this morning. 3 cuttings to a 1 gallon pot in a decent potting mix. Have to tackle the little pond now
Beautiful flowers Keith and Jim.
Keith, nice chicken coop, and I saw you won some photos in the contest, very nice, I really like the succulent frame, you sure are creative.
Funny how the animals get used to the AC, my dog chases lizards when outside, then comes in and plops on the cool tile breathing like she's gonna keel over. I totally feel the same way after working in the garden.
I just walked 4 dogs. 3 are laying in the shade in the back yard, the one with the upset tummy is in her crate. It's getting hotter. Taking dog 5 to the feed store for training treats. Wulfwarro is getting really bored with "come front" and "Sit"
I only submitted one picture this year. It lost. I'm good with that. Congratulations Keith! You earned your wins.
they were very mutant this year. pretty flowers. I have to water so I can go to bed and work in the morning.
LOL...Okay, just gonna not say anything about the carrots....keeping it clean. ((smile))
Beautiful flowers Ju, and there's that froggy again. ☺
I believe my caption for my carrot was "It's a boy" Fairly clean
Carrots capers. Yes. Parsley volunteers sprouted, fennel volunteers sprouted. May have a lemon catnip sprouted in there- am keeping an eye on it. I am starting to collect and dry some of my herbs- those that freeze especially. Rootbeer plant has grown really tall this year, and the Rosemary is one of the herbs I gather as 'sticks' for the kids type of cooking, chuckl. That Rootbeer plant is drinking 2 gals of water a day. The Cardinal flower dodged the deer this year- I fertilized and watered this morning. I have 6 hummer feeders that get emptied at night. 1 cup feeders that I replace every other day. Jim? I have 1 lonesome zinnia, but may get 2 more in another week, chuckl.
