I am trying to understand how to choose plants for containers sitting along the north side of a railing like the one depicted below. The railing is on a roof deck, so the sun is otherwise unobstructed except for a brief period around sunrise/sunset.
Given the wide spacing between pickets, would you consider this a "full sun" environment? Or does the fact that part of the plant will be in shade at all times mean that I should consider it more of a "part sun" environment?
Obviously the answer will depend a lot on how tall the plant is. Suppose that we are talking about a plant that is short enough (and close enough to the railing) that it is in the partial shadow cast by the railing for nearly the entire day.
Thanks very much or your thoughts.
