Biennial Black Eyed Susan

Butternut, WI(Zone 4a)

Starting March 10th I planted one packet of seeds indoors and out to my test plot after the last frost.

They are doing great however first off I didn't realize they were "Biennial" I was sick to think my beautiful plants would not flower until next year and then die.

To my surprise I now have a nice bright spot in the yard BUT what happens next? was this the one and only bloom and why did they bloom the first year ?

I was thinking one could get several generations going and the self seeding would take over however ,I am researching and will plant a variety that will return yearly and would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you

Usually some seed germinates the following year and, like in your case, some seed blooms the first year. That is not typical for biennials. They grow one year, then the following year bloom, set seed and die. So you will probably continue to have a nice patch in the future. I threw some very expired B'eyed Susan seed out in the yard several years ago and have had flowers every year since. Mine are growing mixed with purple cone flowers. You have a lovely stand there.

My black eyed Susan germinates and flowers every year. I always have plenty of them that come back from seed the next year and don't ever remember any that winter over. Kind of weedy but I like that!

Second photo is my shadow over a bunch of them.

You both have much nicer stands than I. I tossed seed onto a former gravel road bed. Mine can't root very deeply and keel over in heavy weather. Hopefully soil conditions will improve with time.
