3/14: Release today + bug reports here

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Cperdue ~ In the past all we had to do when we saw spam was use the "Contact" link to report it. I'm not sure whether it's getting monitored or not right now, but by tomorrow, Terry will most likely see your post on this thread.

Most times the spam is removed. In cases where it appears someone joined just to try to sell something they've usually been kicked off DG.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

I'm not so sure the item in question qualifies as spam. The individual isn't selling anything. Plus it's not someone new who only created an account for the purpose of posting that link. It's a paid subscriber who has been at DG since 2003 and he/she is apparently in the south. I could be wrong, but I don't think it's a violation of policy just to say "here is something of interest to me, and I'm including a link in case you are also interested".

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Dream, you're probably right. I didn't actually look at the post and didn't mean to imply a longtime member was doing something wrong. I was mostly letting cperdue know what has happened in the past in my own experiences after reporting spam.

In those cases it was people who just joined and immediately started threads that had links, usually to somewhere overseas. Also, in one case they started the same thread in several different forums totally unrelated to what they were selling.

Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

It just seems strange that someone that has not been posting in our thread and we are not familar with would suddenly jump in and ask us to sign a petition!! I see she has also started a thread for the same petition.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

If you think it's spam, then by all means report it to admin and let them decide.

Just posting to try and unstick this thread from the watcher.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

As for the posting about the Daylight Savings Time petition:

The same person posted that over on the Mid Atlantic Forum, on the end of a totally unrelated sticky about Upcoming Events.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1311545/?page=3#post_10210614

While it might not be an offense punishable by prison time, it goes against policy of multiple postings of the same thing on many forums - especially when unrelated to the forums/topics found there.

Bad form at the least, and not real brilliant behavior by someone who obviously should know better.

An out of left field question:

Is it possible that there is a slight time disagreement between DG, Internet Brands, the servers and standard computer time most of us get automatically when we log in?

-Terry mentioned a 'slight delay' between reading a watched thread and that thread dropping off our watched list.
-One poster mentioned that the "magically updating threads' were updating a minute before their computer's time'
-I still get notices re: connexity, net expired certificate to check the accuracy of my computer's time
-this thread has been a problem thread from the gitgo in terms of watching it and it getting stuck repeatedly
-other time quirks???

Hard to be on the same page if we aren't on the same time. If DG under IB is now using connexity.net for encryption, connexity is much more time sensitive than other options.

Washington, MO(Zone 6a)

Most, if not all, modern computers use NTP. The clocks should all be in sync, within seconds. The "slight delay" that Terry mentioned, meant that it may take a few minutes for a post (or comment, picture, etc) to be processed, and placed on the site where it needs to be.

Washington, MO(Zone 6a)

I do notice that DG hasn't updated to DST. It's showing my time as being an hour earlier than it actually is.

I think you have to go to your preferences to change your time.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

elsie is correct. You have to change the time yourself in your preferences. That is not how it is supposed to work, btw. Changes for DST used to occur automatically back in the day, but we have had to do it manually for several years now.

That might be bc not all states switch to DST ie Arizona.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Spam & advertising isnt allowed, but it is sometimes why your forums and threads are slow to load while admin cleans the stuff you don't usually see unless by chance. Hackers can be destructive and think they are so smart.

Washington, MO(Zone 6a)

Quote from elsie :

No. The time on my computer is correct.
My timezone in my preferences for DG is also correct.
DG shows my time as being one hour earlier, than it currently is.

This is a (another) problem with the site. They'll probably get around to fixing it, a couple weeks before it gets set back in November (judging by their track record for fixing bugs, so far).

There are two different settings for Eastern time - one is Eastern Daylight Savings and one is Eastern Standard. So I changed mine to Eastern Daylight Savings and the time seems to be correct.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

How can you tell if the time is "correct"??? All it shows that the last post was "3 hours ago".

Well, on the list of threads you are watching there is a time. The last post on this thread is yours at 6:25.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Eggs_Zachtly,

You are correct that the mechanism for changing automatically to accommodate DST is broken, but it has been that way for some time now, pretty much since the 1st round of changes the IB techs made after taking over the code. Thus, I wouldn't suggest waiting for them to fix it any time soon, reminding them that it's broken, sure, but not waiting for the fix.

If you want your DG time to reflect DST, you will have to make the changes manually through your preferences. This (i.e., changing it manually) is what admin told us when we 1st learned that it was broken. Elsie is correct that the 'fix' or work-around that we have all been using is to set your time preference for DST now and set your DG clock for the correct time. Then, starting in fall, manually switch your setting back and forth between DST & Standard time when the corresponding time change occurs.

No, the work around we are all recommending is definitely NOT how the system was designed to work, but it has been the designated work-around since the IB techs broke it ages ago. All that being said, I made the manual change the 1st time after they broke it, and since then I've just left it alone. Thus my DG time is correct only about 1/2 the time these days.

Eggs,

Is your last post supposed to be completely blank, or is my computer now acting up?

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I think Eggs drew a blank....

Washington, MO(Zone 6a)

No. Apparently I just discovered that angle brackets will act like invisible ink when used here. Everything between them (if not an html tag) vanishes. =)

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Oh, yes, been there. I'm just happy to learn that it's not my computer. I'm running an older version of OsX, having not heard great things about any of the newer ones, so I figure I may run into problems eventually. Glad the blank post isn't one.

Eggs, my post about the time was just intended to let you know the situation with the long broken DST feature. It's just one more of the many things the IB techs have broken and failed to put back together, part of the trail of broken features they've left in their wake over the months and years. I'm not trying to dissuade you from requesting that it be fixed. Just clarifying that it isn't one of the things they broke recently.

Washington, MO(Zone 6a)

I'm surprised I hadn't noticed it before now. Though, I haven't been paying detailed attention to this place for a while, and apparently now I am lol.

(Zone 5a)

Today, I have a thread stuck in my Thread Watcher. It is one I began on 22 February in the Indoor Gardening and Houseplant forum.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1416171/

Is that when the wonky dates were all happening?

I went ahead and logged out, closed my browser, reopened it and this thread is still "stuck". I need to reply to it any way so I can get it unstuck, but I am guessing there is still some issue still lurking.

Washington, MO(Zone 6a)

There are still tons of issues. We can't even get them to remove spammers. Do you really think they can fix anything?

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

I'm surprised we haven't heard from Terry (or Alison?) all week long. I asked about a glitch with BirdFiles a week ago (last Friday, 3/18) and I know many of you have mentioned other problems or glitches.

Wasn't this thread started to report bugs?

LOL (which I rarely do). I honestly thought Eggs' post was a sarcastic aside to the comment above. Eggsactly kindda sums it up.

(Zone 5a)

Now this thread "stuck" to my home page. I did the same thing, logged out, closed my browser... The time stamp shows 4:31pm and I searched if there were any edits to posts at that time and there were not.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Im getting that ghost ship feeling again. Maybe admin is only working part time. I remember during the big melt down there was mention that it could be caused by hackers. I really thought after that admin would be more interactive. Strange....

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

I've come to the conclusions that this, less interaction, is the new normal.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Very sad...I just got an email from my mortgage company that they are redoing their website and it will be down for a week. They gave plenty of notice and dates. I wish that's what they would have done with DG, it would be all over by now.

Oxdrift, Canada

Less interaction is an understatement!! I won the calendar photo contest back in October and I have been trying to contact them since Dec. 28 with absolutely zero replies. In 3 months I've probably sent over 2 dozen E-mails and D-mails and there is nobody home.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

I know nothing about "bug fixes, etc", but am I totally unrealistic to think that all this crap that are STILL issues should have been resolved in less than the almost 4 MONTHS that this has been going on? I'd think that any "programmer" or "tech" would be so hideously embarrassed by all this...........................

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Ox, I bought that calendar which pic is yours? I wish they had put the user names....

Some PFs pics are still distorted, many have mentioned it and we have been told it is in the fix pile, just like everything else. I love DG especially the people on it but I don't like having smoke blown up my A**.

Anne, of course you aren't being unrealistic. It's the lack of communication that is bothering me. I know admin doesn't always work on the weekends but I'm don't think they work during the week either.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Oxdrift, I agree that they're not answering D-mails or E-mails.

Did you get all your prizes for the Photo Contest?
I also had a winning photo and they contacted me right away.

The only thing I had to follow up on was the calendar. After several D-mails got no response, I decided to ask Terry about it on one of these threads. She did eventually respond and I eventually get my calendar.

Lisac, if you look at the link for the Photo Contest winners it shows all the winning pictures and which DG member took the photo (with "user names").

Here is the link:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/announcing-the-winners-of-the-2015-photo-contest

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Nuts, thanks for the link.

Oxdrift, Canada

1lisac : my picture was on the front cover..
Nuts: I got my membership award immediately but now seriously questioning the value of that if this is how they treat their members, but never did get a copy of the calendar.
Keith

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Ox yes I found your pic, it is beautiful so is Nut's pic. I can't believe you never got a calendar considering your picture is in/on it.

They never had another Grow Out Chalange either, but considering everything else I'm not surprised. I do wonder where admin is?
