2015 FALL PLANT SWAP THREAD

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

What happens when someone who parked 1st or 2nd--wants to get out to go home?
I guess i don't "get" the 3-across???

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Cars will need to get moved in order to get out. His driveway is three car widths wide and four deep.

Frederick, MD

Thanks, Jeff. Everyone will have to leave at the same time, Gita ! ;) We'll manage.

If you prefer, just park on the street, two on the grass, two on the road. I have a corner lot in the development so I'm thinking about 12 cars could park on the street/yard.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

CAM, I have 6 of those folding tables that I could bring up the Friday evening before if you want to just use them instead of renting. Wouldn't be any problem at all.

Frederick, MD

Wow, Terri.... Six is more than enough. And you don't have to make a special trip. Do you plan to arrive for the swap around 11:00 ? Little early or even a little late would be fine. THANKS, appreciate it !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think neighbors understand that when somebody is having a party, cars end up parked up & down the street (although not on other lawns). If we should avoid parking in front of a particularly particular neighbor's house, let us know. I'd suggest leaving at least part of the driveway (at the end) free of cars so it can be used for pick-up and drop-off.

Having "stations" for leaving plants and an "odds & ends" table have made the last couple of swaps so much easier -- why didn't we think of that years ago?? LOL Actually, I think as the years went on we got to making more and more "trades" ahead of time... at first, we didn't have much of a plant discussion thread, everybody just brought what they had and we shuffled things around. If you brought a lot, you went home exhausted and without much chance to just sit & visit! This is nicer. :-) There's plenty of space in your front and side yard, CAM.

I have 2 folding tables and a card table... I'll bring one to use for extra plants and/or bulbs, and I can easily bring the other 2... I have a couple of coolers as well. Just let us know what you need! Spend that rental $ on a new rhododendron...

Frederick, MD

Thanks, Jill. Between my driveway and my own yard, there should be no need to park on any neighbor's lawns. And if we do run out of room, park from the short side of my front yard (left as you're looking at my house from the street, on down to the stop sign... that guy wouldn't care if you let a pack of billy goats run loose on his yard, trust me.

Jill and Terri, I'm thinking we need two long tables for the food, one for the gift table and one for the Up For Grab plants. Between the two of you, I'll let you decide who's bringing what. I appreciate that a lot.

Yes, plenty of room in my front yard but not as much as there was when you were there before. ;)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK... I'll use the card table for my stuff and bring 2 long tables... Terri has a long table... so we might still need one more. If nobody else speaks up with one, I can probably scrounge one up from a neighbor. :-) I even have a couple of vinyl tablecloths to cover the stains on the plastic, LOL.

Frederick, MD

Terri said she has 6 of them so we have plenty, Jill. Thank you !!

Washington, DC

Dug up a slew of ground cover plants, specifically, Ajuga and Pachysandra. Any takers? If so, any idea in terms of how the heck I keep them fresh till Swap? Refrigerate?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Lisa--
I would not refrigerate! may kill them.

Can you pot them up in some plastic trays--like the kind strawberries and
grapes come in? OR--margarine tubs, sour cream containers--plastic cups?

Just cover the roots with soil--you don't have to, actually, pot them up.
If you have bunches--you can also put them in a Zip bag with some soil in it--
but leave the tops open. Keep moist... This would work good for the pachysandra.

I think you will have a lot of takers of the Ajuga....brace yourself!

CAM---

Do you think this may be "CLOSE ENOUGH" for you to post your
address and driving directions??????
People may need some time to figure out the best routes.

(I will be riding with Robin (catbird)--so will coleup.

Thanks--Gita

Washington, DC

Thanks Gita. Wish I had kept my Swappables in the ground longer. They may expire during our upcoming beach vacay. If so, I'll dig up more before the 19th.

Frederick, MD

My house is super easy to find, not far off Rt 15 in Frederick, Gita. But I'll send out the email soon, anyway.

Frederick, MD

Okay, just sent out the D-mail with my address. If I missed anyone, and you didn't get my Dmail, yell at me. Yeah... go ahead and yell, I can take it. ;)

Washington, DC

I'd love an evening primrose.

Washington, DC

Newbie here. So tell me, what's up with the gifts table? Are we re-gifting ghastly items? Hideously ugly vases, lamps? Clue me in. I will be delighted to contribute a few gems.

Frederick, MD

Anything you want but generally, something you think others will like for whatever reason. Gardening related would be nice. :) Maybe something collecting dust at your place but could be useful to someone else. Or some people buy an inexpensive item to give away (like me). :)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

yeah, like that, no big thing, White Elephant, what have you, special plant.
One person's trash is another's treasure!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Lisa--Re the Gift table---
Cam explained it pretty good...Just think--something YOU would want to have too.
Not junk--Whatever--semi-garden related works. This is all for FUN!
I will even bring a couple of plants for the Gift table--and some other things.

Usually, we take turns choosing-who goes first. whether by a numbers system-
a game system--like BINGO--or such. That is something CAM will create....
It is always FUN--FUN...
Usually, there are things left over. Then anyone can take whatever.

The "Hodge Podge" table is usually for plants no one asked for--but you want to
give away. Up for grabs.....bargains.....

Relaxs! You will have a good time aand get to meet all the Folks you only know
by names from all these Posts.

These Swaps are all for fun and camaraderie. Meeting new people. getting to know
the DG'ers in your area. Eating great food and drinking good wine.

We do this 3 times a year.

1--The Seed Swap--in February--also in Frederick. Held atr Chef Lin's Chinese Buffet.
So by February--there is plenty to share.

2--The Spring Plant swap--mostly exchanging seedlings and new plants to plant in your
garden. Many people here Winter Sow--or grow flowers from seed.
People share dug up roots of plants that can be planted in spring. Stuff like that.

3--The Fall Plant Swap???--I guess you will find out what it is all about on the 19th.

Sally--we cross-posted..... :o)

Frederick, MD

Morning, Swappers !

We are about 100 hours from the swap and I see many have not signed up in the potluck thread. If you're intending to bring something, please sign up in that thread so I know if there's anything else I need to provide... how many drinks, for example.

Thanks, see you soon !

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

100 hours- that sounds so fast!

Frederick, MD

98.5 hours and counting. ;)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Someone is excited!!! That's ok, I'd be excited to have a swap too :-)

Frederick, MD

Yeah, looking forward to it, Jeff. Still lots to do to prepare.

I was hoping to have my beds done but only 18 of my plants have arrived from fall orders. Still another 45 or so and I bet the come like the day before the swap. LOL

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh man, that'd figure. And you'll have all the swap plants to install too.

Frederick, MD

Yep... might be more busy after the swap than I am before the swap. :)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah good luck with all that....LOL Maybe you could have a reverse dig party..

Frederick, MD

Haha... sounds like a plan. ;)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

CAM, I'll be there a little early with the tables. I'll bring 4 unless you think I should bring more. I will also be bringing the ADR bulbs from the fall group buy. They arrived yesterday and I got most of them sorted last night. Your 100 hour countdown cracks me up. I have a countdown timer at work that I look at every couple of days. 527 more days until my retirement eligibility LOL.

Frederick, MD

Thanks, Terri... 4 should be good. One for the gift table, one for spare giveaway plants and two for food. Really appreciate it !!

And LOL... your retirement countdown reminds me of my Air Force days when we were due to rotate to a new assignment. Once we got orders, we started a countdown to departure called our FIGMO calendar. That stands for F It, Got My Orders.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I had been so busy all summer getting ready for the celebration of life memorial service for my BIL, that I hadn't even really looked to see what I could bring for plant exchange at the swap. I probably won't dig up anything this time, but I can offer up a few left over plugs of:

Epimedium 'Lilafee'
Tricyrtis 'Dark Beauty'
Chelone 'Hot Lips'

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Dibs on the Epi!!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok Jeff, got you down for it. I have more if anyone else is interested.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Thank you.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Aspenhill, I believe 5601Lisa, a newbee, was wanting tricyrtis on the HAVES & WANTS thread. Maybe you could set one aside for her?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have decided to give away a 6" HB of a Ric eac Cactus--as I have
2 others growing like crazy.
This plant grows ao fast!

Any takers? If not--i will bring it anyway for the gift table
