2015 FALL PLANT SWAP THREAD

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yep, I'm planning on it. Woohoo!!! Don't know, yet, if MY Jeff will be coming too.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Wooooohoooo!!!! I'm excited Jan. Hopefully Jeff will be able to come too.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Love how we're getting momentum going for our fall party!

Yes yes, I'll be there! Joyanna too, I'm sure. I'll bring Martina (my neighbor and gardening friend) if possible... it's on her calendar, LOL. I will make sure my friends Theresa and Marta (ballet class mom who was at the spring swap) have the dates on their calendars also... they are good swappers even if I haven't convinced them to sign up on the site yet. :-)

I've been chiming in on the discussion thread but haven't put up a haves/wants yet.

I did indeed have Joyanna and a 9 year old friend out in the garden this morning... Trying to train some of the neighbor kids by offering $1/hour starting pay... as they learn and become good workers, that will go up. I think I've pretty much lost Meghan now that she's graduated from high school and is working "real" jobs, although she was getting better than minimum wage from me LOL.

Frederick, MD

Good to hear from you, Jill! I will add you and Joyanna and Martina. Do you want to verify with Theresa and Marta before I add them to the list ?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yeah, just add me & Joyanna for now... I'll let you know if I round up any of the others. :-)

Frederick, MD

Gotcha.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Wish I could talk the Bossman into closing up shop that day so I can bring the whole crew with me.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

That would be cool!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

if they find a sub at work, and Mark and I arrive at 2 pm, will any guests still be there?

Frederick, MD

I sure hope so ! If not, that means the family of skunks paid us a visit.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Sally, what were you doing up at 3:44 AM???

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

having flippin insomnia, OBviously!
rofl
Just wait till YOU'RE a middle aged woman.... no, um...

CAM, we have had rain dates and snow dates in the past, but 'skunk date', that would be a new one!!

Frederick, MD

Yeah, I'm sure it would be a first, Sally. Given skunks are nocturnal and I've only seen them in broad daylight a few times... and given they won't like the noise and commotion that day.. very unlikely they make an appearance.

Twice the past week I saw one smooshed on the road just outside my development. Maybe one or both are part of the trio that frequent my yard.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha Sally, if I'm ever a middle aged woman, insomnia will be the least of my problems.

That's the best roadkill sight...when Mr. or Mrs. skunk are smushed on the road. I don't like killing animals but I sure don't mind seeing one near my neighborhood dead on the road.

Frederick, MD

Same here, Jeff. I'd never have the heart to take one out on my own or put a contract out on one but when an anonymous driver does the deed, no problem !

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha...you got that right. I hit a dead one a couple years back. The stink sack hadn't been popped until I hit it. That was the worst smell ever. I immediately took the car to the carwash and you could still smell it after it was through albeit not as bad.

Frederick, MD

Oh man... decomposing skunk stink sack. Disgusting smell, I'm sure.

I still am very careful walking around my yard late in the evening or early in the morning out of fear of scaring one of the skunks that might be hanging around and getting the spray. Man, that would seriously make for a bad day !

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Yikes! I have never seen a skunk and am not in a hurry to meet one :o(

I did a quick online search about how to get rid of skunks and found this site: http://www.wildlifeanimalcontrol.com/skunks.html

I bought a HAVAHART trap several years ago to catch groundhogs. After trapping multiple racoons, rabbits, and squirrels, I finally caught a groundhog. I eventually gave up ther effort because there were just too many groundhogs around :o(

If you are interested, CAM, I can bring the trap to you. Maybe you can catch the skunks. Then how are you going to relocate them without making a mess in the car?

Frederick, MD

Exactly. I know they have traps specifically for skunks, made so that the skunk can't lift it's tail and they say a skunk that can't lift the tail won't spray. Sorry, I don't trust that theory enough to pick up a trap containing a skunk, let alone putting it my car.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah I don't know about that either. Maybe if you cover the trap with a towel you'd get away with it. I hear that skunks make really good pets once they have that glad removed.

Frederick, MD

I think they would smell musky. Had a gf for a few years that had ferrets and never got used to that smell. I would think skunks would have a similar scent even after being descented. So yeah, no thanks. :) Of course, they would keep the grub population under control.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

True that about the grubs. I picture them like cats though. You could keep them inside and litter trained. That nice fluffy tail is appealing.

Frederick, MD

Then you could put them on a leash and walk them around your yard, Jeff. House pet and instant grub control.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, and you could scare neighbors away.

Frederick, MD

And dogs... and cats... deer... the mailman... the in laws... drug dealers... bears... lions...

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

and...vacuum salesman....the boyscouts.....burglars.....

Frederick, MD

And the Queen of England... the Pope... beggars.... choosers....

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

....democrats....ISIS.....republicans....a partridge in a pear tree....

Frederick, MD

Rosie O'Donnell... Encyclopedia salesmen... the psycho woman that stalked me last year.... that clown dictator in North Korea...

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Aha!!! You took two of mine! I was totally going to say Rosie O'Donnell!! I even had a stalker too but took it out in favor of the partridge! Ah...encyclopedia salesmen, aren't those a thing of days gone by? I actually shared a set of encyclopedias as a kid but then the internet came out and they became only useful for pressing leaves or flower petals.

Frederick, MD

Haha... yeah, showing my age with that one, Jeff. I can't remember the last time I actually saw an encyclopedia salesman... some time in the 80s, I'm guessing. :)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha but I'm showing my age too as the kids now a day probably never heard of a printed encyclopedia.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Had a friend in Iowa who had a pet skunk. No noticeable odor though I never held it. He would walk it on a leash, and at the nearby Dairy Queen people would feed in soft serve, which it loved.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

That's awesome. I've always been into cool pets like that although the wallet doesn't allow it. If I was mega rich I would buy a puma and walk it on a leash.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I would TOTALLY get a russian domesticated fox!!!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

One of the special bred silver foxes that prefer human company more than that of other foxes? They are super cool and equally expensive.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

only 8K
http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2012-10/fyi-domesticated-foxes
I don't have to be mega rich. A modest lottery win would do it!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

No pumas for me... Gunther Gebel Williams got mauled by one during a performance, and if he can't manage one, I sure cannot! I am, however, planning to pick up an American Bobtail kitten in mid-September... either just before or just after the swap, depending on the breeder's schedule.

not positive, but I think skunks just have the one defensive spray gland, while ferrets mark with cheeks and paws, and I bet those secondary glands don't get removed since it's not as strong a smell, maybe also bec it involves small skin glands, ot sure of ferret anatomy LOL.
o
I'll bring something that won't attract skunks for the gift table.

Frederick, MD

Thanks, Jill.... yes, please do not bring any grubs for the gift table. :)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

You're welcome to bring your new kitten though so we can all gush over it!
