we knew what you meant, Jill... just playing with you. :) Looking forward to meeting both friends of yours, Theresa and Martina.
2015 FALL PLANT SWAP THREAD
Tweak me all you want for that dangling modifier! I am ashamed.
"The barn was sold to the little old lady with red doors." Remember that classic?
I'm hoping to see either Eric or Marta at the Y tomorrow... I know I texted her the date eons ago, will check with them to see if they're planning to come. (They came to the spring swap with 2 sweet girls, one of whom is in Joyanna's ballet class... Marta brought DLs and the mystery plant that turned out to be a really tall kind of coneflower.)
Too many garden friends who aren't actually DG members... gonna have to lean on them about that! :-)
My neighbor friend Cheryl "unomeemaw" will still be in town - she isn't leaving for Florida until the following week, so she said she'd love to come. She's been to several swaps before and really enjoys them. She did join DG, hence the "unomeemaw" reference, but how often she is able to get online or not is a different story LOL.
I'm gonna need a bigger grill. LOL
I have a stainless steel gas table top grill that is easily portable. I can measure the grilling surface when I get home. I'll let you know the size and you can decide if it is worth bringing or not if you think you might want more grill space.
I think I'll be okay, Terri, thanks ! My grill isn't huge but I can fit quite a few skewers on it.. and it's a 5-burner one so it heats nice and evenly, which helps a lot.
we'll ration ourselves and go in shifts...
lol
Just add gluten to whatever's on the grille and I'm out.
I won't be so noble as to ration my portion - I LOVE shish-ka-bob lol.
Haha... no rationing will be necessary and no glutens, Jeff. Just red meat and fresh veggies.
That works. I accidentally ate wheat breading a couple weeks ago and it made for a fun night puking up my guts.
You can't eat meat if soy or worchestershire sauce is in the marinade, right?
Let me know, Jeff.... I'll keep some steak out of the marinade for you if that is the case.
And note to self: No wheat bread anywhere near Jeff.
((garlic: vampire as wheat: jeff)
No after swap puking allowed! It is always good to remind us, Jeff. Keep us straight!
I just looked on the Lea & Perkins website and it says the Original Worcestershire sauce is gluten free. Soy sauce is NOT gluten free unless you specifically get gluten free soy sauce.
Haha Sally, you could wear a necklace of dinner rolls and I'd stay away from you ;-)
Thanks for that, Jeff. I am pretty sure nothing else I put in the marinade has gluten in it either.
What do you use? Or is it a family secret?
Besides some herbs and spices, just a bit of A-1 Sauce with the Worcestershire Sauce.
I looked it up and A1 steak sauce is also gluten free. The kabobs should be fine :-)
Excellent. Thanks, Jeff.
No, thank you!
Don't thank me until you taste it. LOL
Haha, I'm sure it will be great.
Thanks for the invite. I'll definitely come (possibly my husband too). I'll bring a salad and a gift for the table.
Welcome, will be glad to meet you, thamng. Let me know about the hubbie so I can get a firm head count. Thanks !
My hubby, Jeff wants to come, too. Thanks
Forget needing a bigger grill, I'm going to need a bigger yard ! Hahaha
What's the record for most people at a plant swap ?
When I had it here in NJ one spring there were probably close to 40. It was awesome. I don't know what the record is. Some even came down from New England. One gal came from Plymouth, MA with her nephew. Another drove from Maine and picked up someone in CT. Another couple drove up from near Charlottesville, VA. One big party.
We'll have a great time!
Whew, yeah, that is a lot of people !
Cam--don't fret about how many people.....we all just go with the flow...
People do bring their own chairs..or should.
Everything, sort of, takes care by itself. We have never run out of food either.
One thing that helps a lot is having the drop off stations for everyone.
You stick a pole in the ground with names on it (legible--please!)--
and, as people arrive, they deposit their requested plants by the person's name.
Alphabetical by names helps.helps....
It can be along your driveway or another place where people can pull over and
unload all their requested plants. They can pick their plants up when they leave.
Keeps the Swap itself less hectic--with people running around and sorting through
all the plants they brought for everyone. Less bartering too....
I don't think you attended the last 2 Swaps where they did this?
Perhaps others have some input on this?
g.
We should also have an 'up for grabs' table like we did last swap at Muddy's. I thought that was great and worked really well. I also say that because I have a few up for grabs items :-)
drop off stations set up ahead has been awesome. Even just those plastic flags on a wire with names on would work. Whatever seems simplest to you, Cam.
It was really insane at times previous, everyone chasing everyone else down to exchange plants.
No fretting, Gita... just may have to adapt my set up since my back yard is so small.
Won't be lining up the name placards along the sides of my driveway, you all would trample my new beds I'm installing there. LOL But I will either use my garage or front yard for the plant disbursements.
I think I'll need to find about 4 of those long, collapsible tables, two for food, one for gift table, and one for the freebie plants. I'm sure I can find a rental place here in Frederick for those.
Thanks for the advise, all !
CAM, maybe Critter or her Frederick friends and neighbors attending swap could drop some tables over at your place? Doesn't hurt to ask. That could also go for coolers, chairs and set up and clean up help.
You might want a Parking attendant for arrival and departure and a designated Grillmeister and someone to monitor food items/stations, too, leaving you free er to Host and give garden tours and solicit input on your fabulous future garden plans! You know I'll be staring at that off center peak out front.
And don't forget a designated area where Muddy can teach us her 'rain dance' in case we ever need one again!
Thanks, Coleup... found a very reasonable rental place with those plastic folding tables that will be perfect.
I would appreciate a parking person. I want to fit 3 cars across my driveway, so we can get maybe 12 parked on the driveway. The rest, we can park on the street, two tires on the grass, two on the road. I need to be SURE nobody parks on the neighbors grass since I gave them "hell" for letting people park on my grass in the Spring when they were having yard sales and when the ground was wet. Grrrrrrrrr.
As far as Grillmeister... can't delegate that job, that's mine ! :) But I won't start cooking until around 1:00, there will be munchies before then. So I can give tours of my house and yard as people arrive.
Rain dance area is about 200 square feet. Is that enough ??
it's enough room for 100 people with square feet.
Do those 100 people wear square shoes as well?
I don't mind being the parking person if I get there early enough. Maybe I'll shoot to get their around 1030.
If you can, that would be great, Jeff. My driveway is pretty wide so fitting three across should not be a problem and still leave room for people to egress from their vehicles.
Yeah I like doing that stuff. I'll try to get there a half hour early.
Your driveway sounds huge. Great for times like this but terrible when you get a foot of snow ;-)
