Hi bubs126, knock out roses bloom a lot and you have to keep dead heading the spent blooms and they will bloom continuously for you. They are suppose to be the easiest roses to take care of. Lots of luck.

How far fown the stem do i deadhead the old blooms?

Cut the stem down to the first or second five leaf set at an angle away from and slightly above the node.

Contra Costa County, CA(Zone 9b)

Red circle: Old flowers. Cut them before they get this old.
Blue arrow: A leaf with 5 leaflets (I put a pale blue dot on each leaflet).
This leaf is pointing away from the center of the plant. It is a good choice to keep this leaf, and cut off the flower by cutting the stem just above this leaf.
Green lines: Cut here.

The new stem that will grow will grow outward, so it won't tangle up with other stems, and it will have a flower.

If you cut off an old flower to a leaf with only 3 leaflets it probably won't flower.

Intersting side note:
The original pictures posted sideways.

I copied and pasted into Microsoft Paint to add the circles and arrows, and the picture was still sideways.

Now I see it has stayed sideways when I posted it.

I have gone back into paint and rotated it 90 deg. right and saved with a different name.

Diana, I have always been afraid to grow roses. You are an excellent teacher. I will probably take the plunge next spring – with Knockout roses. Thank you.

When I worked at a nursery one of my jobs was to prune the roses for maximum show, so they would sell fast. I am afraid I got so burned out on roses I don't much care for them any more. Some have really nice fragrance, but so has Gardenia- and no thorns!

LOL I can see how that might happen.
