How to water flowering/pollinating apple tree?

San Gabriel, CA

Dear Experts,

When I water the apple tree that was
planted a few years ago, I like to shower the
whole tree. To emulate nutural rain.

Also, I'm sure that the tree can absorp
water through its bark, leaves, and flowers.
In that way, it doesn't need to pull the water
all the up from the ground.

However, lately I've been questioning this concept.

When an apple tree is flowering, it is also pollinating.

The bees are supposed to gather and mix pollen from one flower to another.

Could I be disrupting this process?

What is the best way to water a flowering apple tree?

Roots only?
Or, shower the whole tree?

Thanks a lot!

I would deep soak at the root/soil.
Not shower the whole tree. Too many diseases can be spread by splashing water.
When you are standing there playing with the water you are probably not applying the water long enough to thoroughly soak the root zone.

You can hose off the tree to wash off dust (good spider mite control), aphids (may help) but this should not have to be done too often.

A tree will have roots out to roughly the same area as the top of the tree (referred to as the drip line). Apply water to the outer area of this zone.

BTW Diana.

Did you draw that picture of the tree and roots yourself?

If so, what software did you use to draw it?

Thanks

Yes,
Paint.
I do a LOT better with AutoCad, but paint loads well, 'cause I can save it as a ,jpg
