Plant Propagation , The Basics ,Continued May 2015
Looks good you guys. Very nice Debra. Ju, what is a citrus hops? We went down to Spokane last week to get some paint for the deck, I want Bob to paint it and then he can set up the pond. And I can plant all my containers. So much to do. Still have to get the compost spread that he got last week. Then I can get the zinnias, marigolds, etc. planted. Like I said, just too much to do. Will be lucky to get them planted before the snow flies. LOLl Oh well, I just do not have the energy.
Bob took a Cotoneaster out last week that had been in the bed for about 15 years. It really took up a lot of room. He pulled large pieces out with the car. It really had a big stump on it. But it had covered and killed a Hydrangea, a rose, and a peony. Darned thing. Nice to have it out of there.
Bob has 5 tomato plants on the kitchen deck. It just kind of evolved into his deck and the living room deck is mine. I might have to take a couple of tomato plants to the living room deck 'cause they get so big pretty soon he can't get to the BBQ. That happened a couple years ago. They took over the whole deck. Couldn't get to the one in the back to even prune them or tie them up. ttyl,
Wow, Jen, that is a lot of tomatoes! I'd love to see your deck.
Ju, never saw a meadow rue before, lovely!
Debra Sun or Shade the info says ,, they can get as big as a lilac tree ,, fuzzy ferny looking though ,, mine is in the shade ,
I had one once started from seed , and 1 rue Graveolens I still have the later , the meadow I lost and I traded a bunch of moss rolls for the one in the pic
I learned the hard way that Meadow Rue prefers shade... they are super pretty! I love yours Ju....Thanks for sharing the photo.
Ju.... do you do anything special for your iris? Mine seem to be struggling... maybe it's just too hot for them... yours look gorgeous. I especially like the photo you posted with the white and lavender growing at the base of the tree...
I made a small passion vine tee-pee today... took a large pot and tied three posts together at the top... then planted three passion vines at the base... it's in the middle of my pollinator garden... I am hoping it will be frequented by the butterflies. My red valerian (jupiters beard) is growing like crazy this year and seeding itself... it seems to enjoy our climate. The pollinators really enjoy it as do the hummers....I have a white valerian that doesn't do nearly as well.... I'm hoping it will bloom again this year as it's so fragrant. I also see some lillies popping up here and there...
Debra.... you can send some of your cold my way... it's getting pretty toasty here! -:) Nancy
It takes a while for iris sometimes . Sometimes a long while ,, I don't know why . Others I leave alone grow as fast as thistles ,, beats me ,,,
Did the Blue Heirloom iris ever manage to live ?
The White and Lavender is Conjuration by name ,
I was outside wrapping niobe Clematis cuttings still on the vine with little roots hanging , trying a few more on the second plant I missed that rooted and got rather large before I knew it had rooted ,, it is a jungle back there
It started storming when I started typing this , now there is water everywhere ,,
Nancy , how are the zinnia doing ,, Mine did not germinate as well as usual this year either ,,
I keep seeing a rust red something zooming about poof gone at the Hummer feeders ,, I have no idea what the critter may be ,
oh and , NF2932 I don't know how your going to take this ? ,,, but ,, The lavender and white iris ,,? Granny liked them also ,, Their in a vase in the Kitchen , and a vase in the dining room ,, and so on ,,,, lol
I just have to show you my milkweed, Ju..and a few other pics of things started from seed or cuttings.. poor Plumeria had to be cut down, but it is still alive..milkweed (orange butterfly) from seeds in the little plastic water bottle in the blue tub..third pic is one side of the Y from the plumeria it was kinda dark out.. we are getting more rain again, all the white iris are loving it..
Hi Nancy, I am kind of new to iris too, all the ones I have are solid colors from DG'rs, and they took about three years to bloom.. last pic is houutunia chameleon. one little piece made this clump..
Debra That white iris looks like a Siberian ,) I traded to some , the black that is sort of purple and near solid color , A couple of good size fans , not exceptional , but good , Those I have three large fans that returned and are running ,
The double , or multiple colors I will have to see about this fall ,
All I do really is raise them up off of the usually ground level for best results ,, sets take a little too much time for me ,, I am always in a hurry to be done ,, one of those things I guess ,
I admire you and the ability with all those plants and seedlings Debra ,, Nice to see them all too !!!
A lot of my seeds are failing so it is time for me slow down with that , and I am only good with a few plants beyond the wild weedy types like the Syrica , Mustards , Yarrow ,, The Jerusalem Artichokes ,, The coneflowers of the native type ,,
Seems mostly a try for butterfly type host plants and greens for me this season ,
me too, Ju.. my passion vines downstairs are making a nice canopy for me, I just put up another leader ribbon for them to follow, we never got the huge snowqueen hibiscus up, she is about as big as a small cherry tree now, and I have made several cuttings of her already.. only one part of the basement is filled with plants right now, they look so happy down there I am just leaving them.
Joe's potatoes are getting rust spots on the leaves from too much rain.. *sigh*
That iris came from my Great Aunt Effie.. sometimes they bloom, sometimes they don't..
I had a blue one somewhere, but I lost it. :P
this was blooming this am on the arch by the back door..passion vine ends I rooted and brought out in spring are on the far arch.. they are finally starting to climb.I mixed a pot of gladiolas with sunflowers.. I think it might work. Joe is real proud of his garden stones.. they still need a little leveling..
Ju... the blue heirloom iris is alive and doing well...it is growing very slowly - but is healthy and strong - looks good. If I get a bloom - I will take picture for you... -:) And as for the Conjuration iris... I say... Granny has great taste! I just love that one ... it's very delicate and feminine... maybe that is why. All your iris are beautiful.
Debra... your milkweed bloom is beautiful!! Thanks for sharing. I bet the passion vines are amazing when they bloom in your basement!
Ju... I made a little propagator... similar to yours and have sprouted some cucumbers in it... they have their first sets of leaves... now the tricky part will be transplanting them. Your little propagator inspired me.... I had a small plastic container... see through... with a lid and I thought... what the heck... since the cukes never seem to grow in the garden....(I think the mice eat the seeds...) I'll try the propagator... I was surprised they did so well... but I am now challenged to get them in the ground... I may just put them in a pot for now until they get a bit larger... I'm afraid of transplant shock because it's getting hot here. I showed them to my 16 year old son who raised his eyebrows at me and said..."Mom... that's kinda creepy....".... Oh well, a budding gardener he is not... more of a car guy.
I want to buy a 'Mexican flame vine" for my butterflies... Debra... have you ever started one of those in your basement garden? Nancy
You guys, your pictures are great! Really enjoy them. Debra those sweet peas behind the Japanese Iris, think it is, will be really cool when in full bloom. I love them. My sister gave me a lot of extra dwarf sweet peas I am going to put in my containers for fillers. Fun to try different things. Love the Honeysuckle vines Debra, Two tries by Burpee for the red one and never did get it right. Got a yellow one in the same hole as a Nelly Moser Clematis so that will have to do.
Well guys, going to bed, hope to talk to you all tomorrow. jen
BTW isn't it a blast to grow from seeds? I love the seedlings and watching them grow is so much fun. 'nite. jen
Nancy , all kinds of things happen with my cucumbers , two are already dead from mites I will clean the white soapy goo off the others ,
Alcohol and cotton ball is suppose to work .
Sprouters are fun most of the time , I sprout to many most of the time , tend to waste a lot of seeds that way I do . It is nice though to get them stared and to keep them going until the right moment to plant them ,I had an old orangeglo watermelon seed sprout a root today ,
I have about forty cucumber plants still going though , well more like thirty ,,
Debra those plants and Garden look fantastic !!! Mexican Flame vine , reminds me of the Firecracker plants I see once in a while .
I will get some pics shortly ,,
JU, can't garden without Neem oil. That would get those mites usually with one spraying. I got a lifetime supply, wish you were closer I would run over and spray your cukes for you. Neem is just a tree and the oil I think is from crushing the seeds or bark. Would have to google again. But it suffocates the mites. Works great. jen
I left out that I planted a Lovage sprout , two more milkweeds ,syrica yes those ,and 3 campanula , bellflower ,
still a bunch of spinach , zinnia to plant ,,
I need two bodies , with four to six arms each and steel feet and knees that do not rust , lol well it would make easier , especially when , mowing , cleaning , harvesting , and mulching with all that takes place all the same day ,
I agree JU, you do need all that. OR, just don't try to do so much. This is sthe time when you are suppose to sit back and watch all of that stuff you planted grow and bloom and produce.
Give it up 'till next year JU. Make notes for next year to start earlier maybe. Spend your time now on maybe making cold frames to put stuff in if the spring is colder next year. I know it is the weather but we have lived with it a lot of years. Never know what to expect.
Good job JU. We are just about done for the season and you are just starting.
Have you tried the dryer sheets for mosquitoes. Suppose to help keeping them at a distance.
Photo i my zinnia I planted Saturday. Since I paid for only 25 seeds I did not scatter them. I placed them one at a time. I sent some of the seeds to Nancy and Jen. I wonder if theirs have come up. Tomorrow I will plant some different ones.
Two blooms are seeds I sowed last year after deadheading. They sat there all this time and just sprouted and grew like weeds in the last few weeks. I will not lose the seed heads this year and get them mailed right away.
I have the OFF machine , it works when I take time to wear it ,,the little clip fan , with refill .
I believe I use hang a dryer sheet on my belt
Jen , there are still perennials and cold weather crops I want to start ,, only definitely a slow down time , except , mulch and weed are the forever thing ,,

I know JU, you are a lot farther along than I will ever be this year. Just been a bummer of a year for me. The last couple have been. With all this rain the place is beginning to look like a weed patch. Very discouraging. Just don't see how I can try to sell it.
Poor Debra must be inundated with people getting airbags changed. Hope she is ok and not too worn out.
Trying to get Bob to go to the post office for that plant. Don't know what he is doing. Guess I had better call them and be sure they don;t send it back this morning. ttyl,
Which plant is that ? ,, what plant? the Tomatoes for sale?
Me I am doing light mulching and that is all ,
I find the tea plants like burdock and nettle even the cutleaf coneflower .. the earth here loves them . makes it dark and very active ,, interesting way for me to play and educate
Well, I must have made the terrible mistake of posting about a plant at the post office in the chat room on the Back Porch. Now I know nobody reads my posts. Thanks for letting me know JU.
Jen Sounds like your where I was last year , mood and all !!!
Hay hay I am back.. yay!! off work for three whole days! Joe took me and Joanna to the river festival tonight for dinner at the food court, I had corn on a stick, a brat and some funnel cake. Yummy!
it is hot here.. 85 and going up to 92 on Sunday. It was a nice slow spring, and bam! into summer. Good growing Ju. I have so much stuff I can't keep track of it all..
sure hope we get some more rain, even tho we got our months worth in three days , we stil need more with the winds and heat here..last pic is part of my mess on the patio, I collect the rain everywhere I can in tubs of all sizes. Then, I jug it up.
Hey Debra, I said you must be swamped at work with those airbags. They keep adding more and more. Good to hear from you and nice that you started 3 days off with a bang. Thanks to Joe. Is that 2nd picture a geranium? It looks just like one that Bob picked out and bought 3 of them.
Wow you really are a conservationist aren't you?
Yes, we are suppose to be in the 90s this weekend also. Wish I had all my plants in. You can just sit back and enjoy yours. Isn't that nice? Enjoy your 3 days off. jen
What are you doing with them JU? Using them to water your plants? What is the water from?
Well, got things to do, gotta get busy. Spent most of the day in the hair salon getting a perm. jen
Ju, what are the cuttings of? I am glad I am not the only one to collect rain water. we still collect our sink water and dump it out too. I woke up at 8 thirty, and went out and turned the huge compost pile in the alley, added more worms to the worm bin, and then I transplanted some things today, and sweated a lot. whew! Joe BBQ'd for us, and after lunch I took a few pics.
Saw some of my daiseys had the bends at about 5 inches from the bloom top. I cut them off, can't stand to see the "bends" I am sure it is some kind of bug. Put down the grass hopper bait today. saw a tiny one, so now it is time. I planted some other milkweeds, took pics of the spots with the envelopes to ID them.. still looking for a couple other kinds here..
wish I knew what kind the last pic is.. not like my orange butterfly milkweed, but looks like it may be an orange color.
The second one in the bottom row Debra?? It looks familiar. Where did you get it? jen
Debra I don;t know the shrub , looks like some of my Honeysuckle volunteers , the bush type ,,
The Milkweed ,, could be your native orange milkweed or tropical .. There are bunches of native types , about 13 or 14 of them , Verticillata or clasping maybe ,, I guess the first if the blooms turn to white , some open red or orange
The cuttings are Clematis ooops ,, H F Young and Niobe

Looks like it could be any of the shrubs in this area too. Darn I hate that when I don't know what they are, Guess is it's local more important that I know. jen
By the way ," Annual Donut Day " ended at midnight , I forgot to wish you all a good one !!!
